Translated from dumb fuck:
I think destroying the future of the planet, and any potential for the next millions of generations to live, is insignificant compared to my short term temporary personal wealth and comfort.

You too, have watched Don't Look Up. Most realistic movie of the century.

Well, I'm not sure on the "good people" part, but the rest checks out.
Jovan_Knight005@reddit
Billionaires and Millionaires never had poor and middle class people in countries around the world's interests in mind. Nor do wealthy capitalists, for that matter.
Maxsmack@reddit
Billionaires sure, but plenty of people worked average jobs and saved their whole lives to make a few million, or got lucky with their house increasing in value 10 fold, after getting in at the right time, in an up and coming housing market.
There’s plenty of people who are “millionaires” that very much care for the plights of working class people in countries across the world, having themselves been one at one point.
unsolvablequestion@reddit
It’s not talking about them, it’s specifically talking about the masses who deified them in the hopes they could do the same

Individually I'd say the overwhelming majority of us are either good or at least "not bad"
The problem is groups. It's always been groups. Any group of people that is not "all of us" is problematic.
Qualanqui@reddit
I reckon, if you zoom out and squint a bit, humanity falls into roughly thirds, a third of people are objectively bad and a third are objectively good with the final third going whichever way the wind blows.
The problem I feel is that the bad third have become really good at making sure the neutral third lean their way, as well as removing (generally with extreme prejudice) any of the good third that start getting the neutrals thinking in a positive direction.
So in effect the good third are the overwhelmed minority which prevents humanity from progressing in any more than fits and starts, and only when the neutrals are squeezed hard enough to actually listen to them.
Alex5173@reddit
I think the bads and the goods are significantly smaller portions and the bads are significantly better at convincing the neutrals than the goods, but left to their own devices the neutrals would lean towards good.
JoyluckVerseMaster@reddit (OP)
I think everyone is either neutral or bad, and goods are tiny pop, basically mental anomalies.
Decloudo@reddit
"They where good people, they just focused on greed."
Then what is "being good" even supposed to mean?
The killed of their species and the planet, whats good about that?
Comeino@reddit
It's like blaming bacteria for rotting an apple. They aren't bad for doing it, it's in their design.
You watched that Rick and Morty episode with Planetina?
The miners were just trying to feed their families but by doing so voted men into power that would help them keep their jobs even at the cost of the environment.
Do you view someone who tries their hardest to take care of their family as a bad person? Would a good person make their children homeless if it meant they would offset their carbon footprint to what essentially is an insignificant amount that won't change anything?
We are entropy accelerators. For every man or woman who abstains from having kids for the good of their environment there will be 10 who take up the freed up resources to increase their numbers by any means necessary either due to ideological or religious beliefs. At the end of the day despite all of our sophisticated tools and large complex brains we are animals. Apes seeking comfort and killing each other for real and metaphorical bananas. Animals can't have moral agency for they lack the ability to have a full grasp of what they are doing and are conditioned by their environment.
So by "being good" they did what they thought was the right thing to do to the limits of their power.
Decloudo@reddit
So when you say good, you mean by intention, not by actual consequences of their actions?
I fail to see how this changes anything.
Comeino@reddit
Yes.
They would be gone regardless of what they did. The puspose of animated life as defined by it's function is to use, burn and eat the foundation (of energy) upon which it stands until it can't stand no more. You think the bacteria rotting an apple thinks about what happens after they are done digesting it? You think there would be a point in convincing the bacteria to digest the apple slower? With no regard for morality or "good deeds" we are coded to be agents of etropy fulfilling the purpose without beginning to understand it.
Life isn't meant to be perpetual, all living matter on earth is working endlessly at making this planet as barren as the rest. The only reason we haven't died out yet is because our planet being in the goldilocks zone traps a small % of energy that fails to dissipate therefore giving life to matter on a set energy budget. Wihin this budget life will compete on who gets a better share of it all for the sake of depleting it either by growing bigger mouths or making more mouths to feed. It's a very foreign concept for the everyday man to accept and if I tried to explain this to a group of random people on the street there is a high chance some would become hostile to me and everything that I said as it goes against everything that people usually base their meaning of life on.
So all things considered, yeah. They are good people that were consumed by greed (entropy).
JoyluckVerseMaster@reddit (OP)
On the budget thing, we were also only able to power this insanely lavish industrial-thermal civ (thus allowing many of us in the Global North at least to make livings from office work rather than standing knee deep in manure like in most of history) because we tapped into essentially millions of years worth of stored sunlight in the form of coal and oil.
If Earth Mother had turned them into some inert substance we never would have started this industry thing at all.
Comeino@reddit
100% And we used this source of energy so much that we only have about 50-110 years left of it (depending on the form of the carbon based fuel).
JoyluckVerseMaster@reddit (OP)
and that's ofc not counting current events like the Iran war or strained systems/Iranian sleeper agensts continuing to trash oil refineries worldwide.

Invincible leaning the "superheroes are science fiction" so hard it becomes Star Trek.

Submission statement: I was brushing up on Invincible recently and got to this panel. And I really just needed to share it because I keep coming back to it every other day. We really did lose our way. I hope someone out there is listening to us. We blew it, we probably will all die. But someone else might carry on our hopes for us.
