Saving a 1955 Unimog Icon: I'm documenting the entire ground-up restoration of this "Froschauge" survivor.

I’ve recently secured this 1955 Unimog 401. It’s been sitting for decades but still has its original semaphore signals and matching numbers. To respect Rule 4 ("Show Your Work"), I’ve decided to document every single bolt of the restoration process in high-quality photos and video—from pulling it out of the weeds to the final test drive.
I’m looking for one fellow enthusiast who might want to be deeply involved in this journey from Day 1 as a project partner, including live shop access and input on the build.
If you love early Euro heritage and want to follow along or get involved, feel free to reach out via DM. I can't wait to share the progress of this legend's rebirth with you all.

Literally changed the game! A 30 year old stock Unimog is vastly more capable than any modern rig with $30k of mods

Was just at a dealer checking out a 1985 Doka and asked to see the oldest rig they had on the lot. Seeing it in person hit different. I’m seriously considering pulling the trigger on a restoration project now. What’s your take?

I think it’s a fantastic idea. But like the ole adage, money is horsepower-how fast do you wanna go, restorations are also money😂 However I actually think they’re more satisfying. A HP build isn’t done till it’s done, but a restoration is something you can enjoy the whole way. What direction were you thinking? Restomod, period, update important things but keep the same look?

You hit the nail on the head! 😆 If I go through with this, the goal is 100% original. I’m a purist at heart when it comes to these machines. I want to bring it back to exactly how it was in 1955. If I hit a wall with some parts and only get to 80% or 90%, then so be it—but the soul of the car will stay authentic. For me, the journey of documenting and preserving that history is the best part.

100%, I couldn’t agree more. Unimog.net has some fantastic resources. Yea man there’s def a lot of love for these. Imagine rolling up to an ORP in an all original, or a cars and coffee. The history, the capability. I love it. Smiles for miles. You will definitely be starting more people falling in love with unimog who had previously never even knew they existed once they see it for the first time.

Of course, I have a very special passion for these vehicles, and I’m still thinking it over. If I decide to go for it, you will definitely see several posts here during the restoration. Not just photos, but videos as well, of course.

Of course, I’d be happy to do that. I’d certainly be pleased, and if you have any tips or suggestions, keep them coming.
