With every new SUV coming out of China, Lexus just looks kinda meh now.
dontbeslo@reddit
Saw an old SC on the road today and made me realize just how much Lexus lost its way. Mostly a bunch of basic Toyotas with chrome and leather now
bindermichi@reddit
Every Lexus is just a Toyota with a bigger sticker. Sometimes that sticker even is the only difference.
iPoopAtChu@reddit
Name one Toyota that's comparable to it's Lexus counterpart in quality.
bindermichi@reddit
They have sold the same car with a Toyota badge in Japan for years. I would call that comparable
iPoopAtChu@reddit
Which
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
1st gen IS (Altezza), Second gen GS (Aristo), the first 3 generations of the LS are called the Celsior in Japan, and the Third gen ES is called the Toyota Windom. You also have the first two generations of the Lexus RX are called the Toyota Harrier in Japan as well.
iPoopAtChu@reddit
All 20 year old cars
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
well the Grand highlander and the TX are comparable
vw18t@reddit
The original RX was sold as a Toyota Harrier in Japan
bindermichi@reddit
Read the thread... it's been already in here for hours
iPoopAtChu@reddit
No answer then...
Toyota.jp
Find me a model that's a rebadged Lexus

Land Cruiser.
pixel_loupe@reddit
Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX that everyone complains about
73629265@reddit
I wish Toyota sold an LX700 equivalent (front locker) in North America.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Last time I pointed this out I got buried by the Lexus true believers.
bindermichi@reddit
I mean, the only Lexus that is not based on a Toyota or shares the same platform is the LS, although even that might be using the new Crown stuff now.
JEs4@reddit
The IS doesn’t either. The RC and GS for it as well.
bindermichi@reddit
And you'd be wrong. The RC uses the same N platform as the IS and GS, and both have or had their Toyota-labeled counterparts for the mostly Japanese market.
JEs4@reddit
The last generation of all three were on the ‘new N’ platform. It was en evolution of the N but not the same platform. What Toyotas were built on the new N platform after 2011/2012?
bindermichi@reddit
These https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_N_platform
JEs4@reddit
Yeah so, there is only the IS, GS, and RC under the ‘New N’ section of your link which is what I said originally. They weren’t Toyotas badged as Lexus.
bindermichi@reddit
Read it again. I mention that they are probably sharing a platform
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
I don’t see any possibility to see LS back, large limo isn’t a huge market anymore. Toyota doesn’t believe S230 Crown had a huge sales in America.
A_Literal_6_Year_Old@reddit
And even still, that's only the case because the cowards at Toyota North America won't give us the real, full strength J300 Land Cruiser.
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
"full strength" is such a silly way to phrase it.
Yanks never bought the 100/200 in any large numbers. So they didn't bring the 300.
It was noy a popular vehicle in North America at all.
A_Literal_6_Year_Old@reddit
I know, it was mostly a joke pointing out how the rest of the world got the "real" Land Cruiser vs. the renamed Land Cruiser Prado we got. And how unlike previous generations, the LX and Land Cruiser have a disparity there in their current iterations.
I doubt the J300 would have sold much better than the previous gen, but I do see a fair amount of new GSs and Land Cruisers, so Toyota must know what they're doing.
RollTh3Maps@reddit
Is it the same fit and finish, sound insulation, and materials? Sure, you can line them up with features on paper, but there's always a difference in materials and overall comfort. That's worth more to some people.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Not true.
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
Not the RWD models (IS, GS, RC), as few as they are
bindermichi@reddit
The GS shared the platforms and a lot of the Chassis with the 2nd Mirai, the S140 & S160 models were sold as a Toyota Aristo, and the S180 is closely related to the Crown S190. The IS was sold as a Toyota Altezza in Japan. The RC shares a platform with all of these models.
Dwealdric@reddit
Just got finished shopping for a new car for my mom, and this is exactly how I felt about Lexus going in. Where I live in Canada, the NX350 (Ultra Lux) is \~$10k more expensive than the Rav4 Limited, which has the same features on paper. I was convinced on the Rav4 for my mum.
Then we drove them, and yeah... night and day difference in materials, sound deadening, suspension dampening, seat comfort, and just overall NVH.
My mom deemed the differences worth the cost, and went for the Lexus, and I'm super happy for her, as this will be her first non-appliance level vehicle.
The caveat, of course, that my experience is limited to a specific vehicle.
bindermichi@reddit
Yes, they are better in terms of materials and sound deadening. They are sold as a luxury vehicle after all.
KrazyCroat@reddit
Badge engineering is what they do so this isn’t surprising. It’s what most brands do anyways.
koolkarim94@reddit
End of an era for Lexus, I miss the days of the GS, RC, and IS500
Captain_Alaska@reddit
The IS500 and GS never co-existed.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Not sure they were trying to infer that. But the fact that Lexus no longer makes any of those cars is valid enough of a reason to "miss those days". Lexus is trending in the wrong direction imo.
aprtur@reddit
Toyota group as a whole is probably moving in the right direction, to be honest. Those cars can now carry a better sporting focus under a Gazoo Racing lineup, since it will now be its own brand. Lexus F cars were fantastic, but always got stuck in a weird spot between Lexus' branding and competing as luxury sport sedans/coupes. I do agree that I personally feel like Lexus' new direction is hyper boring with crap design (the new ES is hideous) and that's a major loss....but at the same time, if rolling these products over to GR means they will only be better than they were allowed to be in the past, I'm all for it.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
While that me true for Toyota as a whole, I prefer all of Lexus’ previous/outgoing generation of cars compared to their current/upcoming models.
aprtur@reddit
I completely agree with the new direction of Lexus - I'm not a fan, and I alluded to that above with the ES. But with the direction of the wider company now, I think the products we like will be under a different Toyota group brand. I guess that's my overall point - Lexus of old may be dying, but the cars we like will (hopefully) be whisked away to GR.
Reasonable-Mess-1234@reddit
My '94 GS is still the best car I own.
A_Literal_6_Year_Old@reddit
They still make great cars, they just seem to not want to provide offerings for non-profitable segments anymore. As much as I love those cars too, they weren't all that competitive near the end of their lifecycle and didn't sell particularly well, so I kind of get it.
JediKnightaa@reddit
alright bro its not that bad
phoenix823@reddit
As a Lexus owner, I consider Lexus a top trim Toyota. As long as I look at it through that lens I am happy.
R_V_Z@reddit
Even that isn't technically true. The Century is the top-trim Toyota line (if a sedan and an SUV can be considered a line).
bazhvn@reddit
That’s.. just every Lexus.
ImDoingItAnyway@reddit
Eh, the TX is way more egregious. It shares most of its body panels with the Grand Highlander and this will probably do the same thing with this one and the EV Highlander.
magbarn@reddit
Yeah it's pretty bad, especially the cheap plastics in the interior that scratch after you look at them.
007meow@reddit
It really does feel like the era of the plush af rock solid Lexus vaults is on its way out, if not already gone
Wayderrees@reddit
I don’t know why but the plastic in current gen Lexus products ages terribly. It feels nice to the touch but like you said they scratch ridiculously easy.
I’ve had loaner RXs with only a few thousand miles where the dashboard is covered in marks and scratches already.
vw18t@reddit
The older ones from the 2000s and 2010s were worse they had issues with the interior plastics that would melt or chip at the slightest touch. My Lexus IS dash looks terrible after almost 20 years
zoned_off@reddit
I am looking on Google images and the body panels look pretty different to me. Which body panels are shared?
byroking@reddit
They share zero body panels externally. I hear this complaint alot but not sure what any of these people are seeing.
bender28@reddit
That’s also been true of the Land Cruiser/LX and the LC Prado/GX over many generations.
spiketeam@reddit
Wasn’t true of the IS GS LS and LC.
vw18t@reddit
The GS was originally a Toyota overseas same with the first Gen IS
spiketeam@reddit
At least with the GS it was a Toyota only in Japan and till Lexus was introduced in Japan.
Odd_Worldliness_6152@reddit
Those Aristos are so cool
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
The IS hasn't been discontinued.
pixel_loupe@reddit
Those share a platform with the JDM Toyota Crown / Mark X
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
Lexus has nothing exciting coming down the pipeline
Spirited-Pause@reddit
“TZ” sounds like the Arabic word for “my ass”. Do with that what you will.
Bderken@reddit
I’ve driven the Grand Highlander and the Lexus TX (Lexus version of the GH)
The TX is very very nice. Way less road noise at above 65mph, the suspension is much more smoother. That’s how Lexus has been. I own a Toyota and Lexus, and the difference is always worth it if you can afford it for Lexus.
No one thinks Lexus is anything more. But it is still great.
Reasonable-Mess-1234@reddit
Maybe my standards are too high, but I hated the TX. The 350 has a rattly engine and a pretty average ride quality. The $20k cheaper Palisade Hybrid is nicer.
SophistXIII@reddit
We test drove both the top trim GH and the TX350 and were really disappointed with the TX. It barely passed as even premium, never mind luxury.
The TX550 might be nicer but it was like $30k CAD more than the loaded GH Platinum Max for the same features.
Bderken@reddit
That’s really always been the case though. Like the past 20 years it’s been that Lexus is a little nicer. For me, most Lexus models have very desirable suspension compared to the Porsche counterparts parts.
flyingmoose1314@reddit
“Lexus’ new EV follows Lexus’ business model”
Makes sense, honestly.
