"You know, my wife has an old swimsuit from the 90s that's a bright green only suitable for being around other bright, summer colours. Let's put that in the cockpit."
From what i remember the idea was that the color is comfortable to the eyes and calming for the pilot. 60s were full of these colors, look up interior design in 1960s.
Hayden Fry a football coach for iowa was into stuff like that. So he painted the entire visitors locker room pink at Kinnick stadium in 1979. I’m talking every inch of it. It’s still painted pink to this day and is seen as a tradition at this point.
The Command & Conquer: Red Alert series covers that very question and related Soviet chrono developments quite well, if you’re curious. Einstein is involved, a whole lot of bad acting, it’s quite a thing.
It’s where the Pilot has to put the Stick to recover the plane from a Spin. It’s put there to make the reaction easier for the pilot in a stressful situation…

thats great, you teach new pilots and can log IFR time every flight

I actually feel the opposite of calm when seeing this color. Something about it looks so unnatural and out of place it might induce anxiety for me.
BadWolfRU@reddit
Idea was to decrease a contrast between a bright sky and not so bright cockpit interior and reduce eye strain, hence teal or turquoise interior
RelativeIce6171@reddit
also doesn't it help making the instruments stand out more?
LukyD215@reddit (OP)
A pilot might feel different , looking at a mix of blue and green all day is kinda their thing.

Also see the DC-9 cockpit.

Stiff lip supplements covers this topic in their ad campaign featuring the naval fire control technicians.

Somewhat related to do with calming colors.

How could his wife had a swimsuit from 30 years in the future?

I know it isn’t, but it looks like it’s made of cast iron and painted with a brush.
Uniturner@reddit
I’ve worked on aircraft painted with a brush. It’s as bad as you’d imagine.
BadWolfRU@reddit
Since it's a display piece sitting there for a long time - it could be really painted with a brush
MrGnu@reddit
It really does, like you could drop it a couple of times without any damage done.

What does the instructor even see, aside from his life flashing before his eyes every time the pilot makea a mistake
