I hear you, but again just to be technical, appreciation is *any* price increase over time, inflation isn’t considered when defining something as an appreciating or depreciating asset. So with that being said, until the car’s price does increase, it’s still a depreciating asset and a bad investment.

True. But they’re also reaching a lot of younger people with the C8 that they weren’t with prior generations of the Corvette. Personally, I (a millennial) think it looks like a bionic insect and isn’t a pretty car in the least. The C6 and C7 were classically good-looking, and the C7 had a quality interior and was pretty damn comfortable, so that’d be my pick. And I think C7 7MTs actually are appreciating, or at least holding steady.

Why is this comment upvoted? In what world is a C6/C7 a muscle car shaped like a sports car and not an actual sports car? its front mid engine, RWD and has a transaxle with 2 seats, its a sports car, not a muscle car. Is an AMG GT R not a sports car? No grip was a meme 20+ years ago for American cars, the later C7 models like the Z06 and ZR1 you can argue has to much power but they still posted some of the highest skid pad numbers for their time, they have massive tires which translates to lots of mechanical grip for corners. There is also not a chance any C8 model except maybe the ZR1 will hold any value, the rest will depreciate and continue to unlike a C6/C7 which is at the bottom end of its depreciation.

I've driven two different C7s: an automatic Sting Ray and a manual base model (LT? Whatever the base trim is.) Sure, handling is not quite up there with Porsche 911 standards. But it's unfair to say the Corvette has no grip. It does, but just in a different way. It's more floaty and boaty than what you expect if you were raised on a diet of Lotus, but it works very well in the real world. A bump in the road mid-corner is not going to unsettle it.

I'm referring to handling in the sense of what an average driver can feel and do with the car, and whether it feels exciting or engaging to drive. I've test driven a few cars that have 500hp and no feel. It's actually a pretty miserable experience. If you can't feel when the car is at its limits, and you have no idea when it is going to break loose, you end up driving everywhere at half throttle. Sure, a professional racecar driver can get some great times out of it on a closed course. But that's not what I'm personally after in a weekend car.

I have never driven an NSX, and at this point I can't afford one anyway, so I'll have to take your word on that one. I have driven a lot of different Lotuses (Loti?) and can somewhat speak for these. I really liked the Exige. Didn't like the Evora - too soft and compromised. The absolute best driver's car I have ever experienced is the Porsche 997.1 Carrera S in manual. It only has 350hp, but it became as much a part of yourself as your own beating heart. I hope the NSX is the same way.

I don't think you could be more wrong if you were intentionally trolling, lol. The C5-C7s are some of the best-handling front-engine cars ever built. They went mid-engine because they just could not push the front-engine performance envelope any further. And yes, the C8 is absolutely a cut above - but there is a vast gulf between a world-beating mid-engine supercar and 'boomer muscle car with no grip). The C5-7s have immense grip and extremely good balance, which is why they dominated many pro racing series and continue to dominate amateur series today.

Everybody I know who has bought a c8 ended up regretting it and traded it for something else shortly after. Horrible blind spots and they aren't very fast. Of course now they have the new performance models that perform a lot better. But the blind spots are pretty bad from what I hear. I think c6/c7 is the sweet spot.

C5's were dirt cheap for a while, so those were bought and trashed, remaining models are approaching "I know what I got territory" where people are wanting 15-20k for them or not wanting to get rid of them at all. C6's were never cheap but have rebounded in price. ...and yeah old people only bring them out on Sunday morning drives, even in SoCal.

In 2018 I found a 2000 6-speed coupe for sale at a used car lot for $9900. It had 105k miles on it but the carfax was clean as a whistle and it came with a literal binder full of service records. It was already sold when I called because even back then it was a great deal - but not "too good to be true". Most comps at that time probably would have been around $11k-13k.

It being low made driving it at night a real bother with other cars’ headlights, but the seats did not play well with my back at all, and the overall height put your ears really close to the rear tire wells which made road noise worse than other coupes. Outward visibility was also not great, and it was missing some basic creature comforts you’d expect on a $75k car (blind spot monitors, power folding mirrors, a decent infotainment screen), especially when the 6th gen Camaro has them at half the price.

There’s a lot of reverence for the nameplate such that it’s hard to get a nuanced, unbiased opinion. If you’re dropping $50k+ on a sports car, there’s a good chance you’re already emotionally invested in it. It was a real “don’t meet your heroes” moment for me. My 6th gen SS Camaro was a much better daily with 95% of the performance.

I had the opposite experience. Had a C6 Grand Sport for a few years and thought it was SO practical. It wasn't my daily but I ran errands in it and did several 1000+ mile road trips. I swapped in C7 seats and did a 700 mile road trip only stopping once in the middle to get gas and stretch. I absolutely loved the C7 seats. My next fun car will be a C7Z. I test drove a 6th gen 2SS and didn't like the Camaro at all. Blind spots and small trunk.

You’re right, YMMV, but I also understand now why I don’t see many of them commuting to and from work during the week. They’re great weekend toys, but you have to commit to dailying one.

If I dealt with trashed major city roads I’d probably hate it but I live in a medium sized city in the west where dailying a sports car or motorcycle is common and a lot of fun. I wouldn’t buy one for stop and go traffic navigating potholes but for traffic that mostly flows the speed limit or better on decent roads they’re great.

It is odd though, because people daily everything around here (Los Angeles). My 996 is my daily (911s are definitely the most common daily around here), I've met daily r8 drivers, I knew a daily Corvette driver, I even knew a guy who would drive his Pantera to work at least twice a week. I would expect to see the older stuff still out there, but all the older Corvettes seem to have been traded in for c8s.

Depends on use case. I'd say you're right for most parts of the US but here in Europe the Corvette feels like you're driving a battle ship through our old ass cities and parking garages. I would say the C5 has way more power than anyone needs if they're just learning RWD handling. We all learned on cars with like 200-300hp on 225s and you could still end up wrapped around a telephone pole. It's not Dodge Viper level primitive/powerful but it could still get someone in a lot of trouble.

It's definitely on the upper limit but with pretty much any halfway decent modern tires on dry ground you can't accidentally lose traction in it. 350hp on 275s hooks up super well. If that's too much power for you then you'll wrap any car around a tree. I'm also under the assumption this is not your FIRST car, just first rwd car

I don’t even agree with this. Corvette drivers are the ones actually putting miles on their cars. My dad has a 2014 C7 with over 140,000 miles on it. Bunch of old dudes wearing white new balances and cargo shorts, but they go on so many long distance trips as a club and most the cars in the group are this high as well.

I think they’re too expensive for the bargain shoppers now and the people who really like corvettes have a C8. Plus, corvettes really aren’t the scene in SoCal, at least from what I can tell.

The market for C8 Corvettes has crashed - there are just shitloads of them available. With SoCal being SoCal, I'm guessing that people are just trading in their cars for (relatively) cheap C8's. Like there is literally nowhere else that you're going to get a mid-engine 500HP V8 RWD sports car for that cheap. Like you can buy a C8 Corvette for <$60k all day long with relatively low mileage and it looks/feels more exotic than some pedestrian BMW for dudes who just want a cool car.

C7s have a high theft rate , majority of them have been probably stripped and chopped up or lit on fire at a takeover. The ones that remain are stored in garages and not being used as daily drivers anymore.

The same that happened to all older cars. The newest Corvette generation is always the most common to be seen. Older ones may be on their 3rd or 4th owner, bought by someone who can finally afford it and they don't drive it as much. Some younger people may purchase them and drive them but most are still bought my older people who drive them only on weekends, if that. Not to mention any that may have been written off. The C8 is also I think nearly at 200k cars produced. The C7 only had 190k or so, the C6 was a little over 200k. Give it another year and the C8 will have produced more cars than the C6 or C7, so its no wonder you see them more.

I was discussing this with a friend here in the Dallas area. Within about ~2 years of the C8 coming out, I never ever see C7s anymore. It’s like they disappeared off the face of the earth. I figured sure, C6 and C7 owners may have traded in for a C8, but where did that trade-in go? I will see minimum 5 C8s ever single day, but I never see a C7.

There are going to be a million different use cases... But a big chunk of that is a cycle of ownership. People buying new corvettes do often times drive them, they bought new because they weren't worried about the money... Especially people buying c8s after the first few years on the market. Owner #2 often cares extremely about the money and depreciation....which is why they bought used... And as such they worry about depreciation or stone chips

Not in Cali but have several neighbors with either C7s or 8s. They never drive them. Just sitting in their garages. I see them pull them out of their garage about once a quarter. One dude never drives his except maybe once or twice a year. It's laughable and BTW, none of the guys boomers. So laughable, I'm planning to join the club. Already saving up and can't wait for the new C8 GS! I'll keep my truck as my daily.
