How do I proceed with bills?

Hi all,
My wife and I have completed on our first house and we are looking to move from our currently rented flat in around 3 weeks.
We are planning to do some decorating as it’s much easier with an empty house.
My question is how do I proceed with bills and council tax? We will be using utilities at the new place and current one at the same time. Do I setup completely new accounts for the new house? There is an early termination fee on both Gas and Electricity with OVO and would like to avoid paying this if I can.
What are your thoughts?
Thank you

Yes you need to set up new accounts with the current suppliers for the new address and give meter readings from the day you got the keys.
Then when you give the keys back for the old property you end the account on that property and give meter readings as of that date. You can also apply to switch company for the new property as soon as the first account is set up.
It might help to think of it that an energy account is for a property, not a person. You don’t swap an account over, it’s always one account closes and another opens.
Source I work in housing and homeless and manage energy bill set ups for tenants.

You will need to inform the council that you have purchased the new property so they can update the liabilty on their side but should qualify for a 100% empty and unfurnished council tax exemption there until you move in. You can apply for this online or over the phone in my area.

Who currently supplies the new house?

When you move out of your old place, call OVO to let them know you have moved and when you took ownership of the new house. You should take readings from the new house on day 1 and provide those. OVO will backdate the bill and transfer your account over to the new house.

Most will ask you if you just want to transfer your account to your new address

Main thing is make sure you get meter readings immediately - simplest thing is just take photos of all the meters.
The previous owners should've already given their leaving readings, and notified the suppliers, so it's likely you'll get "to the new occupier" letters through from the house's existing suppliers in a few days, at which point you can just stick with whatever default rate they put you on, or move asap onto a cheaper deal somewhere.
