am 43 years old nowaday, and i remember my time in old school session in ircqnet, floods, psybnc, bouncers, bitchx, spoof.....do you remember that time ?
largos7289@reddit
son i remember batch files...
stephenph@reddit
I had a fidonet node for a time, although I never did start up a bbs for real (only had one phone line and crappy copper)
Cyberhwk@reddit
I definitely remember spoofx getting me into some...uhhhhh...certain websites.
spicysanger@reddit
Irssi from a freebsd bash terminal, so everyone doing a ctcp version check knew you were a badass
calladc@reddit
And had it running in a screen so you were perma online somehow
ohyeahwell@reddit
Then znc for elder kiddies
OffenseTaker@reddit
real badasses used BitchX
rootsquasher@reddit
BitchX was pretty much the only IRC client I could find around 2002 and 2003 that would run on IRIX and Mac OS X.
blissadmin@reddit
The real badass move was having a vhost name that was an ereet play on words or reference. Like me@will.pwn.j00. Or at least in a teenager's mind it was!
f00l2020@reddit
I remember paying a hosting provider so my bitchx vhost was l33t. Those were the days
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
remember those time using psybnc to hide our info !!!!
spicysanger@reddit
Oh 100% it was, people paid crazy amounts for shell accounts on systems with l33t host names
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
dont be rude you might be a master !! but we are padawins !!!
egyenlet@reddit
Oh man. I was a big O operator on undernet. Those were the days. 🥺
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
might i ask you !! did that made a diferance nowaday ? are you working in hight tech ?
stephenph@reddit
Irc helped, but I was pretty much locked into geek culture at an early age. One, my dad worked as an IBM engineer, two, my elementary school had a computer club, we actually built one of the early pre PC computers (an altair I believe) three, I had a Netcom unix shell account at the time of irc starting out
calladc@reddit
Irc paved a way to high end tech gigs for me
Hoooooooar@reddit
me too
egyenlet@reddit
Never really thought about it like this but you're totally right.
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
that why we have to bounce !!!! we made that shit , we have control over it !!!!
egyenlet@reddit
yeah I work in Cybersecurity but before that I worked in tv/film as a visual effects executive
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
great , so your irc adn still in your blood and flow ! that why when you saw my post its make your blood go hot ? lol nice !! we are the same !! thangs god we are not alone !
LOGWATCHER@reddit
I can tell instantly when I meet IT people if they were involved in scene stuff from those days.
We all share a similar vibe when it comes to tech, the way we talk, the way we handle things
frac6969@reddit
I’m 54 and was on EFnet. Quit irc and went corporate before Undernet.
mitharas@reddit
And one generation older were usenet moderators, who were the real OGs before our time.
pdp10@reddit
Usenet was only moderated in theory. Even running a feeder, I only could have controlled posts from downstream leaf nodes.
Servers could very much control what hierarchies they wanted to receive, but after a certain point in time, that was almost purely for storage and bandwidth reasons. Policing the content of those hierarchies was borderline impossible.
This is why Usenet had a reputation for being nigh uncensorable at the time. Governments today have given themselves a lot more laws and bought a lot more technical tools and manpower, so today it's not just a matter of hooking Iran, North Korea, and Russia up to Usenet.
Sneakycyber@reddit
I will be 48 this year. I got my start with 14.4 dial up and IRC and BBS boards. I remember when cable modems were download only.

omfg that that was quote in tose time !!!! rotfl !!! you made me laught and made me malanclohic !!! its good to hear am not alone,,,,,, we are not alone ....
stephenph@reddit
My first modem was limited to 300 baud. The text would creep along so slow. My lines were also crap so sometimes I would get bursts of noise that would screw with the ASCII, not to mention the other family members picking up the phone. Fun times
UninvestedCuriosity@reddit
That was my first as well on an atari st no less.
frac6969@reddit
So many of us failed school after getting on IRC. (I Repeat Class.)
UninvestedCuriosity@reddit
I have no regrets about this. I actually dropped out and went for a good enough diploma later on. Brain plasticity was at and absolute premium and time was better spent online.
graph_worlok@reddit
But the knowledge you got in exchange is damn near impossible to teach!
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
that why we are part of a select group! and its not for our wallet ! but for our knowledge !
DropTheBeatAndTheBas@reddit
quake multiplayer too
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
rotfl !!! you got it all !!! full respect !!!

Yeah. I even wrote an IRC client. Good times.

I miss thc and phrack active irc times
Joestac@reddit
It's 1995, I just downloaded the Godzilla chat bot and I am crashing AOL chat rooms left and right until my mom's account gets blocked and she disconnects my phone line so I can no longer play Starcraft on Battle.net.
iamnoone___@reddit
Easily one of the best phases in my life. Between the anonymous friends, learning to script, the concept of channel wars and takeovers and stuff. I literally still think about some of my friends from that time and wonder.
Cryptic1911@reddit
Ah yes the good ole days of hanging around and learning shit, messing with people and also using dcc to get porn and bootleg software lol. I miss that shit. IRC was awesome, like the wild west back in those days
franciscolorado@reddit
Old enough to remember nick collisions before they time stamped nicknames.

nasmunet@reddit (OP)
i dont get it ? whats the point ?
Burgergold@reddit
I remember that time
Your question qas do you remember that timr
whetu@reddit
Sheesh it's been so long. Was it #warez_cafe on Dalnet?
irn@reddit
My cousin: “What’s IRC?” me: “see that smiley face on your desktop?” “OOOOH you mean MIRC”
MonkeyMan18975@reddit
We had a Major BBS running out of our house with a pair of bonded 56k frame relays that everyone would call into that would then initiate a SLIP connection and allow them to get to the internet. Usenet groups and Public University FTP/BBS were all the rage in the early 90s
irn@reddit
QMB 4 Lyfe and all the other mp3 ripping scenes fighting over blood and glory to see who could 0sec
ManOfLaMontagne@reddit
I was in a DF2 Jedi knight clan that was on IRC. Do people still use it? Gods that was awesome.
Sneakycyber@reddit
I remember those days! ASCII images, music, pictures (some you wanted to see, some you DIDN'T), all good fun.
mmp@reddit
You weren't cool unless you had the lowest ICQ number possible. Did anyone else spend days brute forcing the password of a 6 digit number that you eventually forgot?
mgr86@reddit
Yes but I was mainly there for the warez. grabbing lists of mainly university ftps and grabbing mp3s. I was already on my second mp3 player before an iPod was released. I was so excited when I got my 56k modem.
Oh that and drug related chat rooms where you edit your /nick to indicate what you were on that night.
I’ll be 40 this summer

All the things, DCC warez as well. :)
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
damm bro my respect !!! your are the deal !! you lived it all !!! that wonderfull ! you have a lot a to teach !!!!
stalker007@reddit
idk about a lot to teach, but I have a LOT of stories from irc and hacker cons, and running warez top sites.
btw bash.org archive is still around here: https://bash-org-archive.com
No direct search on the site, so you'd have to use google site search, but without giving away nicknames, I see myself and a bunch of people I know on there.
For people who come across this thread today or in the future, and wonder what hacking was like back in the days: https://www.youtube.com/@wwsul/videos
dai_webb@reddit
I am mid-forties and remember this very well! I started using IRC in around 1993 using the PIRCH client (Polar Geek's IRC Hack), and ended up running my own network with multiple servers around the UK, complete with chanserv/nickserv/operserv, plenty of EggDrop bots.
Oh the nostalgia! This brief look back in time made me smile, thank you :)

I didn't know how our pots line didn't catch fire.
HuntertheDragoon@reddit
I'm 35. Started using IRC when I was 11-12 for a private Ragnarok Online server. Remember +m for unruly arguments, bot attacks, and being begging for +v (voice, I think). Later was in some channels for a GTA VC mod and then a Nintendo forum. I think we had some trivia bot in one of them. I miss the small-knit communities of IRC channels. Good times.
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
you remember openkore !!!!
Eternal_Glizzy_777@reddit
IRC introduced me to the world of Warez, FXP, and “pubbing.” I ca. confidently say I wouldn’t have the love or security I do today without that little detour on “the dark side.”
The_Wkwied@reddit
Willing to admit that I spent much more time that I care to admit on IRC without even knowing what it was... taught me how to script and type a bit. Still have a mark for being slapped around with a large trout. Good times.
User1539@reddit
Oh, yes ... it's crazy now how into just text we were, but I remember people talking like having contact outside of your hometown was on par with traveling to Mars.

nut-sack@reddit
Haha irc.mit.edu was the best back in the day. Hack a few edu boxes and get on the mit edu server so you were likely alone on the split.
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
dammm bro you remmeber those time hijacking some edu server for proxy bouncer !!
nut-sack@reddit
nah man, you take out all the OPs and when the channel is opless, you ride a netsplit and keep ops. Either that or you have to create the split 2 links up so it doesnt know its split. Then you can keep ops when it rejoins, even if the room had ops already!
nasmunet@reddit (OP)

deegood@reddit
Yeah I remember mirc and ircn, then eventually bitchx/irssi. I was continually connected to IRC from 98 to 2012 or so. Eventually work and personal groups had all moved to slack/signal.
Those were good days though, our whole social life in college was organized on IRC. Life was better when you had to physically sit down at a computer to get online.

44 year. Many years spent on undernet, dalnet and eventually efnet.
One thing held true in all, every user in every #linux channel on every server were assholes.
Oh my ICQ number was 691784, and we use to send exe’s of Back Oriface around and take control of folks computers.
I remember my first version of Redhat I installed (4.2), and the stock kernel 2.0.30.
Also remember a time before a lot of ISPs used shadows of their /etc/passwd. A user could download the /etc/passwd and run John the Ripper on it.
I say all of this because I can’t remember shit from last week, but all of this mid to late 90’s tech has stuck with me ever since.
nasmunet@reddit (OP)
you remember wat formed you !! to think outside the box !!respect bro !

Originally started with ICB. Been on IRC since roughly 1992/1993; channels originally had an
@prefix, not#(and prior to that they were purely numbers). Many years later was an EFnet oper/admin for a major hub. I can still use telnet/nc to speak various protocols by hand, particularly IRC, POP3, and SMTP. Yup, I'm officially old.nasmunet@reddit (OP)
