It should be yes, but big factors are more than just the room size - is it well insulated, how high are the ceilings, what kind of windows are there? A heavily insulated room that size with no windows and a low ceiling will chill far quicker than a room that size with crap insulation, massive patio doors one end, skylights, and high ceilings.
FWIW - various models and forecasts suggest we're in for a dog-shit summer, so I would hold off for a bit.

Ceiling height is around 2.3m. The room is extremely well insulated, to the point that it turns into what I can only describe as a torture chamber once the temperature goes above 20°C. It also gets a strong blast of direct sun from about 4pm onwards through the casement windows.

In that case the insulation and the windows are making it hot - heat comes through windows, insulation stops it escaping. This works well for an AC unit if you buy something (heavy curtains, reflective film, etc) to stop the windows heating everything up too much.
You've now stopped the sun heating the room up, your 5000 BTU unit will chill the room, the insulation will keep it cool.

Hmm I have a 9000BTU portable one in a 10m^2 room. Feel like just enough. But I suppose portable ones are less effective than it says on paper because there's going to be air leak in from outside all the time...

5000 BTU will be enough.
The key is to get a really good seal to the window for the exhaust hose and to have the hose as short as possible, ideally like a foot or less, as otherwise a load of heat escapes from there and makes it really inefficient. So think about how to achieve that.
There are guides on how to modify it to be an air exchange / intake system, I'm sure someone will share the link. I've never done that, but would do if I was handier.
