Help cloning sata ssd OS into a new nvme ssd
Posted by Electrical-Metal-180@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 10 comments
soon im gonna get a new ssd, an nvme one. Can someone tell me if im correct with the steps. This is the first time im upgrading pc myself. I will be using macrium reflect.
-
install the nvme ssd. Activate/initialise it in disk management. Just so the OS or document can be store in it.
-
Turn on pc and start cloning.
-
Turn off pc and unplug the old SATA SSD with old OS. Turn on the pc and test if new nvme with OS works and booting up
-
If success, turn off pc and plug in old SATA SSD and “select all and DELETE” and everything is done
im sceptical with the number 4 part select and delete. Please advice, also anything i mentioned wrong…im terrified if i fuck this up

For the last step you should be opening up Disk Management and deleting all the partitions on the SATA drive there. That way you get rid of the small hidden boot/recovery partitions too, not just the files on the main data partition.
Also before you do any of this you should backup any files you cannot afford lose somewhere else, either a third drive or the cloud. Because there's always a tiny chance something goes catastrophically wrong and you lose what's on the drive.

where do i find those data? in my OS drive, its a lot of misc stuff and files. unlike my hdd where every file i created myself

What data?

Like usually which folder people backup? Both Program files? Any others?

Well no, Program Files is just the data for the programs you have installed, you can download those again. I am talking about documents, media files, whatever exists on the drive that you'd hate to lose.

Just wondering since we already need to manual delete all the partition and file after the clone, this mean all the file will still be there after cloning. If the clone failed to transfer to the new drive, the file will still be there no?

Yes.

I keep reading ppl use macrium on an USB, is it needed?
or i can just install in my old ssd and use it to clone to the new one

Most cloning tools will create the new partitions for you, no need to manually initialize the drive.
The step about unplugging the old drive and testing is correct.
Deleting the data once the new drive works is fine, although if you have important documents I would verify the integrity of your backup first.

how to verify?
also the computer will automatically change my boot up drive to the new one after i unplug the old one correct?
