Where can one do winter sports (skiing, snowboarding etc)?

I'm an international student that'll probably be starting uni soon and I'll be in Edinburgh. I've always loved the idea of snowboarding so I was wondering whether there are opportunities to do so in the winter near edinburgh or anywhere relatively close.
Thank you for all input!

There's a dry ski slope at Hillend, but finding significant real snow will probably involve trips far from Edinburgh. Haven't seen serious snow around here in years. I have a snow shovel in the garage that I last used ... in the early 2010s?

A 2 hour and 23 minute drive will take you from
Edinburgh to significant real snow.
Tumeni1959@reddit
Yup. Not local.

Step 1: buy a cheap Ryanair flight to France/Italy/Switzerland/Austria.
Jaded_Ad_6658@reddit
Why? They are on the doorstep of great skiing in Scotland. No need to take a plane anywhere.
SuperHansDunYourMum@reddit
Skiing in Scotland is absolutely woeful compared to any decent resort in the Alps. Not "great" by any reasonable definition.
Jaded_Ad_6658@reddit
No it’s not, at all. I ski all over the world, and if you’re looking for a good ski trip whilst based in Edinburgh, you really can’t beat it. There is nothing woeful about it at all.
travelingwhilestupid@reddit
you're just wrong
Jaded_Ad_6658@reddit
You’re just antagonistic. The facts are Scotland has five ski resorts. Enjoy.
travelingwhilestupid@reddit
there's barely any skiing in Scotland, certainly no great skiing.

Don’t talk absolute rubbish and especially don’t post it here. Glencoe, aviemore, glenshee, the lecht, fort William………!
ObligationProud308@reddit (OP)
Ngl yeah might as well enjoy europe while I'm there
travelingwhilestupid@reddit
do you have a passport that gets your to Schengen without a visa?
ObligationProud308@reddit (OP)
Nope, id have to have apply for Schengen right?
travelingwhilestupid@reddit
oh no. forget it then.
ObligationProud308@reddit (OP)
Is the application process for it quite difficult?

Winter sports is not very common in the UK and you will have to go to mainland Europe for proper slopes or dry slopes in the UK
Jaded_Ad_6658@reddit
What? Don’t comment on things you know nothing about. You just spread mis informed rubbish.
DarkNinjaPenguin@reddit
Where did you dig up this nonsense? Snowsports are great in Scotland.
simont410@reddit
This is new information to me
BryOnRye@reddit
This is how I find out the indoor snow slope at Braehead in Glasgow has permanently closed!
Jaded_Ad_6658@reddit
Glencoe, Aviemore, Glenshee, fort William. All have great ski in Scotland, few hours from where you are. No need to jump on planes anywhere.
Front_Society1353@reddit
There is Ski centres in the Highlands open in winter. Isnt going to offer the variety of France or Italy but a good place to learn
Virtual_Opinion_8630@reddit
You're in Scotland. You can do winter sports in the Cairngorms
sammyglumdrops@reddit
If you’re at the University of Edinburgh, they have a snow sports club.
Also, there’s a a dry slope at Hillend in Edinburgh for skiing and snowboarding (never been so can’t comment on whether it’s good).
AllThatIHaveDone@reddit
There's going to be a ski club at your university, which seems a sensible place to start.
