Basic things to check before MOT?

Hi everyone, I've got to take my car for its first MOT since I passed my test. I was wondering if there's any basic things I should check over before hand, so I don't fail on something stupid and avoidable.
Example: I'm pretty sure my rear wiper will fail so I'm going to change that.
Cheers.

Washer fluid, clean the numberplates and windows, make sure the sunvisors are out of the way (seriously) and that there isn't anything hanging from the rear view mirror, or stickers that are in the 'sweep' of the wipers.
Also, clean the car, inside and out. I know a few MOT testers, and while this is wildly apocryphal, they've said they will be more likely to fail a shittip car on something minor than on one that is clearly looked after.
There are a lot of things that can fail at 'the testers discression'
other stuff like bulbs etc has been covered by others.

Hello,
Sorry I had to comment on this 6y old comment, but this is the first time in my 30 odd years I have seen the word ‘apocryphal’, let alone it be used in a sentence talking about an MOT.
Thank you for the new vocabulary stranger.
