What do you guys do to ride safe?

After my e bike was destroyed in an accident it makes me wonder what I can do to ride safer since I'm getting another e-bike?
CommercialSignal7301@reddit
Assume drivers are distracted, negligent, reckless or homicidal.
ArmchairPancakeChef@reddit
Drive and look around as if someone's TRYING to run you over.
Derektheredcat@reddit
This…even in crosswalks you are not safe. Never assumed you are seen.
ArmchairPancakeChef@reddit
Crosswalks are some of the worst. Drivers constantly invade the pedestrian crossing to see oncoming cars and are fixated on to their left.
Here you come on your bike from their right and chances are very low that they will see you crossing. Lots of the roads near me are NOT bike friendly so riding on the sidewalk is the only option.
X2F0111@reddit
Where I live riding a bike through a pedestrian crosswalk is illegal, I assume partly for this reason. I always get off and walk if I have to use a crosswalk.
ArmchairPancakeChef@reddit
That sucks. They make the cyclist's life more difficult because people don't know how to drive a car.
Persistent_Parkie@reddit
There our plenty of places in town I will go out of my way to avoid crosswalks. Having to keep an eye out for drivers coming from 2 directions instead of 4 is so much easier.
ArmchairPancakeChef@reddit
You can't avoid them if you have to travel 3 miles down an urban street.
Persistent_Parkie@reddit
Obviously, I'm talking about where it is feasible to do so
Dudebutdrugs@reddit
It technically not legal to ride on the sidewalk but honestly it’s so much safer. If there’s no pedestrians I’ll hop on the sidewalk. I don’t like being 3’ away from 50mph traffic and I watch people on their phones swerve into the bike lane.
But still ride defensively. My childhood friend was run over be a reversing box truck when we were like 13 and he had multiple broken bones including his hip. But, he was riding on the sidewalk so he was deemed at fault so nothing happened to the driver.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
There are many places where it is legal to bicycle on sidewalks. Most states do not ban the practice but leave it up to local ordinances.
irony_delerium@reddit
Be sure to double check that one, though - some places have different rules for electric vs. non-electric bikes. Oregon outright bans them on the sidewalk, for example.
Additional_Delay_793@reddit
Sidewalk riding just takes some common sense regardless of the laws. If there are pedestrians using a sidewalk I generally avoid them. I often ride in areas where it's safer for me to be on the sidewalk than in the road. I feel like the police would rather I be on the sidewalk instead of disrupting traffic and causing a more dangerous situation. Also the speed at which you ride on a sidewalk has a bearing on whether it is safe or not.
TheDarkRedFox@reddit
Stay as far away from cars as possible. (And watch lots of old DanDanTheFireman videos)
Proxy345@reddit
NEVER trust anyone on the road, that's the main important thing to remember.
cold-corn-dog@reddit
There's a particular Burger Kind drive through that I pass on my way to the gym. Every last one drives forward with their head facing down in the bag. They'll even look you right in the eyes, look down at their food and drive forwards.
NotASockPuppet88@reddit
Full face mips helmet with visor (sick of bugs trying to get in my eye) plus armored/padded jacket (the stealth kind where its inside the fabric) Sometimes wear padded jeans too (again stealth)
The helmet i use is a bell mips adventure helmet.
Bit overstressed, but its not to protect me from the ebike, but protect me from the much faster (and oblivious) moving traffic around me.
nobullshitebrewing@reddit
I dont act like I own the friggin road and stay out of the way
dreamaliddledream@reddit
I work graveyard and the downtown streets are lockdown-empty. I feel spoiled. Spoiled and free. Then, I'll take mine out during the day, and am instantly reminded that we need to eliminate most forms of private transit. People are literally trying to kill eachother on the road by being so incredibly negligent. It's wild.
medicated4875@reddit
I work nights too… roads are fairly empty around here at 9pm and 5am…it’s pretty awesome…my 16min ride is peaceful
MoFauxTofu@reddit
Dress like a Christmas tree and pretend you're invisable.
slacknsurf420@reddit
On top of all that, get good tires, get really good tires, don't skimp on the tires... And specifically use the appropriate type tire for your route like I'm on pavement I use slicks
TopRepulsive4766@reddit
Well first of all, you have to ride like a motorcyclist. That means you assume you are invisible to all larger vehicles on the road. You may often have the right of way only for a car to ignore your presence and barge on through. Cars coming out of driveways, waiting at stop signs, etc. will often proceed, ignoring a bike or motorcycle. I've ridden motorcycles since I was 10 and I've sort of developed an instinct for this behaviour.
Now second: Protective equipment is highly advised. It pretty much goes without saying that a helmet is a good thing (although I do hear people arguing about helmet use). Naturally a collision with a car will be disastrous helmet or not, but for many less-serious accidents a helmet can save you a head injury. Other protective items are a good idea also (gloves, knee and elbow pads, decent shoes). Wearing highly visible clothing is also recommended for obvious reasons. And light up your ebike. If you have bright lights on your ebike, cars are much more likely to notice you. This really applies mostly to night riding, but some lights are also visible in daylight. Another thing I recommend is a rear-view mirror. I like to see what's behind me just in case.
Lastly, use common sense. And choose routes that are safer, less-congested, and more bike-friendly.

You’ve got to learn bike routes in your area. For me that means the side streets next to the main routes. Utilizing bike paths and infrastructure when possible, sidewalks when I’m forced to. Learning where I can cross the major roads and do most of my riding on the quieter side streets. The side streets aren’t much slower on a bike either. My state has a law that bikes can treat stop signs as yields so I usually make just as good of time. It’s a learning curve but you have to find ways to navigate your area on a bike which is a different skill than vehicle navigation. It takes time and effort but on your usual routes you’ll find where you can cross, where you have a good shoulder, where you need the sidewalk, where the bike lane or underpass is, what intersections or sections or streets are hostile, etc.
You’ve got to ride defensively. You have to ride like no one sees you and every car will make the worst possible decision. You also have to own space when necessary. Take the lane when you need to instead of riding the shoulder.
A mirror, good helmet, and good lights front and rear and visible clothing of course.
dananapatman@reddit
This guy rides bikes around City with cars. Great advice
Wind_Advertising-679@reddit
I'm glad to read that another E-bike rider has taken the time to ride defensively and still have fun. Familiarity with the roads is spot on. 💯
_starwipe_@reddit
Wear a fucking helmet. Learn to think at least a block ahead and observe potential obstacles in you line. use throttle to maneuver out of danger and use brakes as an additional safety and not a primary.
MaxDusseldorf@reddit
I used to be Dutch, and as a result I am opposed to helmets for cyclists. But of course I will be super careful, ride defensively,...

These lights are great. I have them on front and back. I also put reflective tape on the bike. On my helmet. I always wear safety yellow. I always wear a helmet. I always wear my red wing boots. Not flip-flops. I don’t take chances
Mobile_Ad8543@reddit
Even if a car driver breaks the rules of the road and right of way, let them "win" & yield to them. Drivers who don't follow the rules of the road, at the least will honk and scream at you, and at potentially HIT you.
clichepate@reddit
Stay off the main road whenever you can on bike paths, protected bike lanes etc. stay as far from cars as possible and always take a second look for cars and pedestrians
Significant-Pen-6049@reddit
Mirror
Impressive_Page8182@reddit
Get a body camera of some sort and take the advice of motorcycle riders : (you dress for the slide not the ride ) : also try looking into some kind of front and rear camera display system to be mounted on your bike
frank_be@reddit
Helmet, mirror and reading the situation before you are there
m2keo@reddit
Keep it at 20 mph or less. Anything faster and it's gonna reduce your anticipation and response time. Reciprocally, most drivers are not anticipating u to go much faster than that on a bicycle/ebike.
Been riding for 3+ yrs now and no close calls here.
PeachLower5901@reddit
i stick to places where there are no cars.
SadisticPawz@reddit
What matters most is your speed during dangerous conditions. Slow for everything that is a threat. Such as peds, crosswalks, driveways, doors, blind corners, snow, ice, wet roads while turning, wet leaves, loose ground such as sand or gravel, parked cars, turning cars (they don't always signal properly and intrude into the bike lane often), dogs and their leashes... that's about everything, besides that, you should always anticipate everything. Head always on a swivel. So always use the advantages in visibility and mobility that a bike gives you and HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay home
Ok_Armadillo_1336@reddit
Unless you provide context to how your bike was destroyed you're just gonna get a bunch of general things your mother/father or wife/husband would tell you.
Help US help YOU.
Spiritdiritcel@reddit (OP)
I was in a bike lane and was hit from behind
dagofin@reddit
Not really much else you could do as long as you had all the visibility devices? Personally I try to avoid riding my ebike on roads where at all possible, I'll go out of my way to stay on dedicated bike paths if the bike lanes are not physically protected from drivers.
Ok_Armadillo_1336@reddit
Seriously? Why ask for guidance if you're not going to give relevant info?
Day?
Night?
What time?
Moving?
Not Moving?
At a stop sign?
At a light?
At an intersection?
Do you have a rear view mirror?
Reflectors?
Light on your helmet?
Reflective clothing?
Bright clothing?
On and on...
I'm not wanting an answer, just annoyed that people take others' goodwill without putting for *a little bit* of effort.
Furynine@reddit
Always slow down when necessary, stop lights, stop signs, bad pavements, etc
Lordly_Lobster@reddit
Assume drivers don't see you and exercise the utmost caution at intersections. I was hit and then separately almost hit because the driver didn't see me. I hate riding on the road for this reason and stay on bike paths as much as I can.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Use sidewalks where possible if safe to do so. Always yielding to pedestrians and reducing speed when passing.
