I offered to take my 15 year old son and his friends to see GWAR. All I got was eye rolls and a look of disgust

I get that times change and we’re old now… but seriously what the hell is wrong with kids nowadays?!!!
Feralest_Baby@reddit
That's exactly how I would respond to that invitation. Definitely not for everyone.
Climboard@reddit
Sucks for them.
Resident-Complex4682@reddit
My husband brought 2 of our kids & their friends for their 16th birthdays. Ridiculous and unforgettable! Looking for pic to share….
Miniscule_Platypus@reddit
“Son, you will rebel against society and the status quo and you will LIKE IT or you’re grounded for the next SIX MONTHS, MISTER! Now go to your room and put on Scumdogs of the Universe right now until you’re ready to come downstairs and eat your dinner! Hrumph!”
Chef55674@reddit
“And, while you are at, you will also take these Slayer, Megadeth and Carcass albums for after dinner listening until your ears ring! Kids these days!”
Prestigious_Spend454@reddit
Ah, they were my halloween at Hammerjacks in Baltimore several times in the 90s. But time marches on, and your kid is SUPPOSED to hate your stuff, you old fart. It's part of the process, good it its way even if you don't get to share something really cool with him.
FWIW, the man who played Sexecutioner is battling cancer and is pushing his blood drive. The blood isn't for HIM, but for general good and to foster research. Donate in his name, and you can score a tshirt. It's a good cause, and I'm wearing mine to the show in pittsburgh.
Rwhite5440@reddit
But as we have all learned from the music, our parents listened to. Many years later, we find we like that same music because it reminds us of when we listen to those songs with them.
At least that’s my experience and I hope many of yours as well
joesphisbestjojo@reddit
Being a new Richmondite, I need to see GWAR
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
What’s in the water in Richmond that produces so many great bands?
rubysundance@reddit
Welcome to Richmond. I hope you enjoy it.
shotsallover@reddit
Wear disposable clothing.
zombie_overlord@reddit
The blood and guts wash out surprisingly easily.
shotsallover@reddit
Yeah, I think it's mostly just colored syrup. Made like the good art school kids they are.
Capt1an_Cl0ck@reddit
Once in a lifetime opportunity. I saw them last year. They toured with Static-X and did a 40 year celebration.
zombie_overlord@reddit
I saw them on that tour too.
Also just took my 13yo to see Castle Rat/Amon Amarth/Dethklok, which was a pretty awesome show
Sa7aSa7a@reddit
Holy shit that looks amazing. How much were tickets?
zombie_overlord@reddit
This one was about 85 bucks
Capt1an_Cl0ck@reddit
Static X and Gwar with two openers was $53. Smaller venue. Holds maybe 8-900.
GeistMD@reddit
GwAR has always been an eye roll. They can sing, they can't really play, and their get up is dumb looking as fuck. Seriously I don't get how you thought you'd get a different out come, they're not even cool Gen X, they're gimicky 80s metal.
Shoddy_Tour_7307@reddit
Stupid take and wrong.
MinimumAnalysis5378@reddit
I just watched clips from when they were on the Jerry Springer show!
Shoddy_Tour_7307@reddit
Fun fact. The clips were from the 10/30/96 show at the Agora in Cleveland. My first GWAR show!
nobodyimportant009@reddit
Man Im sorry. Took my family with me to GWAR last year and my son had so much fun he's going back with me this year.
Shoddy_Tour_7307@reddit
Sorry to hear. I took my 16 year old daughter to her first GWAR show on 3/29. She loved it.

Subject-Stuff-2829@reddit

Let me guess - late Gen X?
I couldn't stand this band. But I do recall my Xennial gf dragging me to a show.

Your name is Alison, too?!!?!?
AlisonSandraGator@reddit
No sorry! My name is after the lady gator from the Amazing World of Gumball! Great name though!!
ALIJ81@reddit
Oh that's cool! Thank you!!! 1🥰
warrenao@reddit
Jeez, are they still around?
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
They are still around and they continue to do the lords work
I_am_ChivoBlanco@reddit
Not everyone's dead yet, give us a minute.
chadnorman@reddit
In 1995 I saw Phish at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, which is a dual venue so two bands can play on the same night. That night, the other band was GWAR, which made for some very interesting lot moments between the two fan bases after the show 🤣
saint_ryan@reddit
nuke_the_ocean@reddit
White T-shirts only! A+ parenting and clearly your family is one of great culture.
Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
As a native Richmonder I feel this. I can’t say I really liked gwar for their music back then except for their shock value and general hilarity at the shows. Oldsters really clutched pearls over their antics. I wouldn’t really expect youngs now to like them, either because they’re so puritanical or they prefer programmed robot music.
SteakSwimming1234@reddit
MEAT.SANDWICH! MEAT.SANDWICH!!!!!! Saw them a bunch of times in the late 80s/early 90s in Richmond area. RIP Dave!
No_Maintenance_9608@reddit
First time I heard of GWAR was because of Beavis & Butthead when they played one of their videos and they're both chanting GWAR! GWAR! GWAR! GWAR!
These days I catch Sleazy P. Martini's livestreams.
X2946@reddit
I’m gen-x and I have no clue what a gwar is
brokencappy@reddit
Same.
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
You’re either lying or just came out of a coma
GeneralPatten@reddit
I've heard of gwar, but never paid attention. It didn't seem worth my time.
I_am_ChivoBlanco@reddit
Then your time is not well spent my friend. Embrace the nonsense, the sense in this world is useless.
storm_the_castle@reddit
half art collective, half heavy metal performance artists that didnt take themselves very seriously... started in the late 80s
interesting documentary that came out in 2021 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7Z4pB9m8F0
X2946@reddit
Thank you for no responding like a dick. I will check it out
shotsallover@reddit
You are 100% missing out. Just know that you go to the show for a good time, not good music.
LordChauncyDeschamps@reddit
Thats fair. At 15 everything your parents like is super lame. My step-dad loved ELO I thought they were so dumb and boring. A few years later I realized he was right.
skeeterbmark@reddit
I’d be rolling my eyes at you, too. lol.
stevejscearce@reddit
You do not “offer” to take someone to see GWAR. You drag them kicking and screaming to see GWAR. In the end, all must submit to GWAR.
FlyingTerrier@reddit
I saw them last year!

Put on some of the covers they did for AV Club. Their version of Carry On My Wayward Son is a fucking scream.
Andovars_Ghost@reddit
I didn’t understand GWAR back then and I still don’t.
I_am_ChivoBlanco@reddit
Nice, honest response.
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
You’re trying too hard
Andovars_Ghost@reddit
One of my best friends in Scouts LOVED them and none of the Troop ‘got them’.
shotsallover@reddit
The whole thing is satire/parody of metal bands. You're not supposed to take it seriously. You go knowing the joke and just go along with it.
The lore is that they're here to destroy the minds of humans with bad music. But the music tends to be not half bad. And there's a lot of on-stage antics that are just over the top.
Gandalftron@reddit
They are metal band of intergalactic Nordic warriors that spray, albeit fake, shit, and blood, and piss, all over the crowd and are awesome. What more do you need to understand?
schwing710@reddit
Millennial here. Saw GWAR for the first time with my metalhead friends back in 2003 or so. I find it odd that a teenager wouldn’t like a band that was practically engineered to appeal to teenagers.
VinnieStacks@reddit
They are attracted to it, they aren't attracted to the 50+ year old audience or the 55+ year old members, costumes be damned!!
You wouldn't be either at 14/15 so let's stop pretending that this is the shit kids of today should be into!
G0R_G0R@reddit
I saw them in 95 when I was 15, kids these days…
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
Saw them in 95 with the Meatmen and it was incredible
I_am_ChivoBlanco@reddit
You suck!
DjScenester@reddit
I see them all the time Riotfest! It’s always a blast!
LastNightOsiris@reddit
Imagine if your dad offered to take you to see Frankie Valli and the four seasons. That’s probably what GWAR sounds like to a 15 year old today.
I_am_ChivoBlanco@reddit
That is a really bad analogy considering all the rock/punk bands that overlap.
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
I see what point you are trying to make but Frankie Valli had no fake blood, guts ,urine or semen.
schwing710@reddit
To be fair, you have no idea what’s happening in Frankie Valli’s pants
Sa7aSa7a@reddit
I would have gone. Who self limits themselves with music. I listened from Manson to Sinatra and 2pac to country. Still do. Some days need Teddy Pendergrass and some need Stormtroopers of Death.
gooeyjello@reddit
I just saw that a few weeks ago. There was such a huge age range. 14 year olds- 60. So great
DrNeptune88@reddit
Meat Sandwich.............!
Round_Ad8947@reddit
We cosplayed GWAR in 1995. Making working costumes was half the fun. I saw them twice, great fun all around. Like Spinal Tap-not to be missed.
Were they in Adventures in Babysitting?
mattwb72@reddit
Is GWAR Gen X?
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
Apparently only half of us

schwing710@reddit
Castle Rat is also doing a pretty good job keeping it alive.
singhapura@reddit
I still have a pink t shirt that was white before the concert lol.
StressMysterious7530@reddit
Friend of mine wore his to school the next day. He was as proud as a peacock.
twelvesteprevenge@reddit
I had the exact experience w my 15yo kid. “I’m good. I don’t want to get covered in fake blood.” What the fuck, child.
shotsallover@reddit
That's what throwaway clothing is for. Get a cheap white t-shirt, worn out jeans and some old shoes. Sheesh. Kids these days.

I mean...GWAR in 2026 is even more cringe than they were years ago.....
Gandalftron@reddit
Are you sure you are Gen X and not a Boomer?
NetJnkie@reddit
Very sure. Funny watching voting on my original comment going up and down.
Honestly, I've just never been a fan of GWAR. I didn't realize they were still touring.
Real-Emu507@reddit
Heavily tour too. They've done warped tour. Lamb of gods headbangers boat. I don't listen to them , but won't pass up a chance to see them live
shotsallover@reddit
I'd never buy one of their albums. But I'll go see them perform just for the ridiculousness of it.
Ok_Echo_6528@reddit (OP)
I’m sure by cringe you meant fucking awesome
Live-Motor-4000@reddit
As an old git, I really regret not seeing some iconic bands as they weren’t kinda my thing - as my musical tastes broadened, I now see I missed out.
Anyhow, a GWAR show is a good time, in fact yesterday I bought tickets to see them later in the year
zombie_overlord@reddit
Be sure to wear a white t shirt and get up in the first few rows.
Seriously fun show though - I've seen them a few times.
shotsallover@reddit
Here's what you do. Get tickets.
Then the night of the show, you just roll up, say, "Here put these on" and throw some disposable clothes at them. When they ask why, say, "It's a surprise. We're going to try to save earth." Then you drag them to the show, hand out earplugs and just let it happen.
savedbytheblood72@reddit
My daughter went two years ago while in college. She was amazed .. to see them on stage in full force going crazy. Squirting fake blood and stuff being thrown from the stage. Some of her friend got rashes and eye infections
shotsallover@reddit
Sounds like they did it right.
