What happened

So I’m talking to a younger colleague today about my sore back that I constantly have. It’s noticeable, walk with a very slight limp from sore hip and back. He says - looks like you’re hurting today… you know that type of conversation. I tell him it’s my own fault- lack of proper nutrition, lack of working out ( even though I have an active job). I work hard and earn my beer at the send of a day. Body aches.
So thinking of our conversation tonight and get down and start doing my leg stretches like docs been telling me for the past few years.
I’m laying there stretching and feel my ass. It’s bone! Nothing there.
I’m a guy who was the typically jock in school, FB, BB and ran track. I had quads like gods. I was voted best butt in the yearbook. Now there is nothing there. Nothing. I had to put another notch in my belt to cinch it tighter because my slack were sagging. I can’t sit on a chair or bleacher without a seat cushion.
What happened….thats rhetorical dumbasses.
Now get off my lawn? Am I there? Fuck!
OneLonelyBeastieI-B@reddit
You said it. Lack of nutrition.
90% of everything is food intake- “weight control” is not so much working out but nutrition.
Up your protein. Walk around the block a few times every night. You would be amazed at what just that little bit can do.
myopicpickle@reddit
And cut back on the beer. Many men have beer bellies and no ass. It's like the butt migrates to the front.
PutAdministrative206@reddit
I got a gym membership last year only to get access to a leg press machine. I wasn’t getting enough from my dumbbell squats.
Get your ass back to the gym and GET YOUR ASS BACK!

I'm 53 with a super active job. My lower back had been hurting a lot no matter what I thought I was doing right. A couple months ago, I added hanging exercises to my workout, 1 exercise each day...pull-ups, dips and hanging leg raises. My lower back hurts way less. Now its more of a full ache. I think my job compresses my spine and stretching it out really helped. However. Sleeping wrong still makes it hurt. Lol
just321askin@reddit
I’ve got more muscle on my frame now in my late 40’s than when I was in high school. Even had to get a new cut of pants to accommodate my things and ass, which have grown over the years. A consistent gym training program with heavy weights, and a high protein diet, works wonders. Just a few hours a week is all it takes, and it’s really important as we age to keep that up.
My geriatric parents have lost all their muscle mass and have been in and out of hospitals after preventable falls, many times. My mom can’t even walk up and down stairs or get out of a chair on her own anymore. By contrast, my wife’s parents of similar age play tennis weekly without issue. The difference is night and day.

I’m currently an A cup too, forgot to add that.

No glute muscles equals bad back. Time to get back in the gym?
Over_Maintenance_447@reddit
Yep time to reactivate the glutes!!! And it works.

"Best butt in the yearbook" -- yeah I'll bet that's an award they don't give out anymore lol.

Several months before my dad passed away, he complained to me about losing muscle, as well as the padding on his behind. He didn’t like to go to certain restaurants because they had hard seats. Mind you, he was 85 at the time. He’ll always been a very strong guy, and he was just getting frustrated with the changes that happened in his body. I suppose we are all on the way there.
The main thing that bothers me now, at 59, are the changes in my vision, as well as developing tinnitus. I wear progressive lenses, and I can’t read much of anything without them. My memory is still sharp, and I don’t repeat myself in conversations. I don’t repeat myself in conversations.
Nugget814@reddit
good lord, if I hear my 83 year old father complain about "the most uncomfortable chair I've EVER sat in" in every dang restaurant, doctors office, or literally anyplace again I will probably scream. It's a constant stream of complaints about the chair hitting him in the wrong place on his back, or it's too hard, or it's too soft. Unrelenting complaints!
Also, I have tinnitus and sometimes I can't see in the morning because my eyes won't focus even with my glasses on? 53 is starting to suck. LOL
NorthernDragonfly@reddit
I never repeat myself either. I’m totally with you on the vision thing. If I need to see fine detail, then it’s best that I sidle my nose right up to it without glasses. Cutting pets’ nails is a whole new ballgame now. To see far, my contacts are best. So I now carry all the accoutrements if I’m gonna be out all day: tissues, contacts, case, solution, tissues, progressive glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, tissues, eye drops, and wipes.

49 next week. Work has labs done every year on us for free through our clinic. Came back my A1C is in the diabetic range and I'm pushing 235 at 5'8". I'm active. I drive a trash truck most of the day but still mow weed eat and hike and walk before and after work. I've changed my diet drastically and still struggle to lose weight. 10 thousand steps a day and try to keep my heart rate up. Talking to another older guy at work and we're both running circles around the younger guys. Just hits us harder and faster at the end of the day.
blackpony04@reddit
See if your doctor can get you on a GLP1, specifically Ozempic for that diabetes. It's a miracle drug in spite of the ridiculous social shaming with weight loss as the side effect and lowering A1C, cholesterol, and all the bad stuff that can kill us is its main purpose. I've been on it for 3 years and not only nuked the diabetes, I kept the 50 pounds off I would routinely lose and regain for 20 years. At my last physical the doctor actually came in and shook my hand to congratulate me on my perfect numbers.
Wren572@reddit
My doctor wouldn’t prescribe Ozempic, but was fine with Mounjaro. Double agonist vs single, I think was her reasoning? I’m 54 and have been overweight most of my life.
I was pre-diabetic for at least a decade and after my hysterectomy, I slid into actual diabetic territory. I tried metformin for about a year and had no changes, it just made me constantly bloated. I started Mounjaro July last year and my A1C - which was 6.6 at the highest - is now down to 5.0. Went from 220lbs to currently 152. I’m only 5’3”, so I could stand to lose a little more, but I feel so much better. Also, I’m only on the 5.0 dose. I’ve never need to step up further.
I have severe degenerative arthritis is the facet joints in my back between L4-S1. This drug has significantly helped with that inflammation, too. There were days I had trouble tying my shoes and that’s no longer an issue. I’ll stay on it forever if it means that I don’t have to deal with that pain.
10/10 would recommend.

My instructor at gym gave some good advise.
Sit on the floor everyday. Watch tv play with kid whatever, doesn't matter. The purpose is to keep using the muscles to get up. When you eventually fall, you'll hand am easier time getting up
Happy_Kangaroo97@reddit
I am convinced this is incredible advice. I am a kindergarten teacher. I am up and down off the floor and tiny chairs all day. My ability to maintain overall strength and balance is suddenly different from my peers. I can move like I’m in my 20s still. I also think our “who can stand like a flamingo the longest” contests while waiting for parents at dismissal have helped maintain strength and stability. Sometimes it really is the small things that make a big difference.
MikeyMad01@reddit
Getting up from the floor also helps your balance which… helps you avoid falls. Strengthens a lot of stabilizing muscles
sprocket1234@reddit
Thank you for finishing, I don't remember it all, as it didn't help my memory lol
Administrative-Bed75@reddit
I practice sitting on the floor and standing up with no hands, every day. Do I work out a lot otherwise? Not lately. But I can still do that!
Pharsydr@reddit
I should have done that before having open heart surgery. You can’t use your arms much for a couple months , especially getting up. I got stuck on the floor a couple times because I couldn’t resist petting our dog and no one was around to help me up.
sprocket1234@reddit
Yes, even sitting in chair or couch, get up without using arms, using only core muscles. Everything you can do helps
GeneralPatten@reddit
This is interesting! I'm 55 and I sit cross legged everywhere. When I'm doing work in the garden, on a project, fixing my mower/tractor, I always sit down for anything lower than waist height. It's just what I do. I was helping a friend of mine with a project recently and she kind of smirked when she saw me sit on the floor with my drill/screwdriver. I just shrugged my shoulders, and laughed a bit, telling her my father would have told me to get off my ass and "do it right" if he ever saw me working from a sitting position! She's a rehab nurse and immediately replied that most folks our age struggle with getting up from sitting on the floor and it's impressive that I have no problem doing it.
Historical_Project86@reddit
Similar is happening to me. I naturally had a decent derriere. Not any more, it's becoming an old man's derriere.
OliveBadger1037@reddit
The same thing happened to me. I used to be really active with wrestling and jiujitsu. Then hip surgery knocked me out for 6 months. Then covid hit, and you can't wrestle in a socially distanced way and no way in hell did I trust those guys to maintain a "pod". And then I started working from home. So here I am, 6 years later in the worst shape of my life and I turn 58 on Monday. Gotta get back into a fitness routine somehow, but it's hard to do.

Yeah, it was 50 for me. I was with my teenage sons and there was a pullup bar so my boys jumped on it to show off. I was laughing at one of my boys attempts and jumped up there to "show them how it's done".
I made one pathetic, shaky, disgraceful pullup.
I was shocked at myself as I've always been naturally strong and fit. The next day I started working out and have not stopped in 18 months. I'm now in great shape, no pains at all, can work outside all day and no problems the next day. I was also suffering from noassatall and now it's definitely better. I lost 25lbs and 4 inches off my waist and am significantly stronger than I was. I transformed my diet which made the biggest difference on the scale and in my labs but the strength and fitness was all from working out.
We're at the age we have to be intentional about it or you just waste away. It sucks.
Severe_Slide_9765@reddit
Have your hips checked, you might be surprised. From a retired radiology tech.
gratefulkittiesilove@reddit
How do you have your hips checked…? By what dr
Severe_Slide_9765@reddit
Orthopedic surgeon and have X-Rays and MRI done on your hips (bilateral). If he a good doctor, does the correct movement test on you in the office visit, you and he'll know which hip is causing the problem before you leave the visit. Ive seen people going in to surgery for back pain, and the surgeon changed it to hip replacement just before surgery time.
Advocate for yourself and make sure the doctor checks everything. If he doesn't, find a new doctor. Peace ✌️

Yeah I was telling my sisters I have inherited the male flat butt that plagues the males in the family. Belts don’t work, we need suspenders. They laughed. Seriously though, I was able to pick my great uncle out of a crowd of people during Covid based on his shimmy and pull up of his pants as he’s got a flat butt. I will see him today actually at a funeral for my great aunt.

Op, might want to consider an ortho. Ive remained active in adulthood but started developing back and hip pain in my late 40s. Ignored it, figuring I'd overdone things, until I couldn't. My left foot was permanently pointed outward. I limped. I just kept pushing through until I went to my physical 4 years ago. My doctor commented on the limp and I told her my thoughts on overdoing but having trouble giving up workouts. She suggested an Ortho. Color me surprised that I have severe late stage arthritis in my hips and they were basically totally shot. I had my left hip replaced about a year later and it's amazing. I'm almost 100%. I need the right done as well but am trying to wait until I'm retired in a few years. Your symptoms could be due to inactivity but they sound a lot like what I was experiencing.
Impossible_Luck_6193@reddit
This, for sure. And ask for an MRI. Other possibilities: Labrum tear or AVN. Not a doc but recently went through similar pain that led to hip replacement.
IslingtonCrane@reddit
Get a yoga hammock. Hang upside down by your hips and use gravity to help stretch. Also, check out GMB(gold medal body) on youtube, he has great functional fitness programs. Your hip flexors and ilio-psoas will thank you for it.
Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
I can’t help the noassitis but I’ve had back problems for years. I finally went to a physical therapist who showed me some specific stretches that helped immensely. The trick is to do it regularly, which I frequently fail to do.

Sudden weight loss of more than a few pounds at our age is a very good reason to go have a checkup and blood work.

If you don’t keep up maintenance, the vehicle breaks down. Not too late to show the changes. Get labs done with your doc, see if your hormones are in line, tighten up the diet, get to the gym, lay off the booze, get your ass moving.
