What are the current GenX TV shows?

I’m slowly watching the Scrubs reboot and wondering what are the current GenX targeted TV shows?
SlideClean1415@reddit
Derry Girls
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
That show was spectacular. Set in 1995 but doesn’t bash you over the head with nostalgia, and it’s a high school comedy with super relatable older characters for us old folks - Sister Michael was fantastic.
Ready_Tomatillo_1335@reddit
Check out “How To Get To Heaven From Belfast” if you haven’t already!!
Phobos1982@reddit
Wow. I haven’t seen pretty much any of these series, besides Scrubs.
bliceroquququq@reddit
In classic GenX style, I just rewatch old Shows I’ve already seen a dozen times.
videoman7189@reddit
That's it right there. I rewatch M*A*S*H and Star Trek a lot.
I like to watch some newer shows too but they do so few episodes that it doesn't keep my viewing schedule filled.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
I just started season 4 of TNG.
liddybuckfan@reddit
I'm currently in season 2 of a MASH rewatch.
JimC29@reddit
I've watched every Star Trek series. Check out Seth MacFarlane The Orville
It's not a Star Trek spoof, although the first episode might seem that way. It's reminds me most of TOS because so many of the episodes are about discovering new planets or species.
devo0630@reddit
I loved The Orville and was bummed that it got cancelled.
JimC29@reddit
I just discovered it over the winter. I binged it in a couple of weeks. Maybe it's recenty bias on my part, but I think I like it better than any Star Trek series and I liked almost all of them.
devo0630@reddit
What I loved about it was that it was a comedy version of TNG. Other than Strange New Worlds (and maybe Picard), I haven’t liked any of the new Star Trek series on P+.
JimC29@reddit
I liked those. I also liked Discovery because it was far in the future from all the other series. Plus it really dealt with the alter universe. But those are the only new ones I liked.
devo0630@reddit
Discovery lost me bc it was originally promoted as a series that took place before TOS and yet had more advanced technology than TOS. It’s not perfect but at least SNW tries to stay closer to the timeline.
HedgeCowFarmer@reddit
We rewatch Arrested Development, Thirty Rock, Young Sheldon and Parks and Rec on the regular
SnooRadishes1376@reddit
SAME HERE!
themoop78@reddit
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
mmmmmarty@reddit
Really good shows will have you noticing new things every watch
oopsymeohboy@reddit
The two most GenX series to have ever been created are:
The Americans.
Deutschland (83, 86, 89)
These were made for us.
Phobos1982@reddit
Haven’t seen either.
Gullible_ManChild@reddit
Whatever is in the youtube feed i suppose.
I used to think TV was forever because at least they had live Sports and live News but now that's all far better streamed too. I'd be interested to know how many GenX still watch TV. Why would TV producers target a group not really watching anymore. I think things like the Matlock reboot and endless Law and Order type shows, doctor shows is for our boomer parents - its not even for peeps younger than us. Why a younger person would even bother with TV is baffling.
With tablets, phones and PCs I assume the sale of TVs themselves is stalling - is there a point to owning a TV if you can get a monitor and cast whatever device you want to it to watch everything but TV channels.
FrankCostanzaJr@reddit
the pitt feels like a great gen x show. but i dunno, it's just kindof a great show all around for anyone...but it definitely feels like it's written by gen x, and the important characters in charge are all gen X.
blana242@reddit
Man on the Inside. Depending one where you are in Gen X, you might feel more like the dad or the daughter. 🤣
WhereItsAt75@reddit
Does anyone else find it hard to get into new shows? I keep rewatching the same old shows and find it hard to enjoy anything new. R.J. Decker caught my interest and Best Medicine but thats about it.
Crusoebear@reddit
By far….The most GenX ‘whatever’ type vibe show - that is also smart & darkly funny - is Patriot.
OceanGrownPharms@reddit
Just like Gen X, underappreciated and hardly seen
xpert_98@reddit
Shoresy and Paradise

This. Especially as we start losing loved ones.
Great story line
Careless-Two2215@reddit
Who? It seems like it skipped Gen X and went straight from Boomer to Millenials to Gen Z.
Ceorl_Lounge@reddit
Bill Lawrence is solidly GenX, definitely has that sensibility.
JRSmall74@reddit
Malcolm in the Middle....short season but pretty good.
irishgator2@reddit
Anything with Linda Cardellini
Total-Sheepherder-63@reddit
I never thought about it this way, but Somebody Somewhere is very GenX.
msoats@reddit
Such a good show
Glad_Chemistry4651@reddit

electronraven@reddit
Svengoolie
TheJokersChild@reddit
Hell, just about all of MeTV is catnip for most of us, even if the shows aren't really our current demo.
devo0630@reddit
My favorites now are:
Poker Face (Peacock), because it has the feel of the old 70s/80s crime TV shows like Columbo.
Star Trek Strange New Worlds (Paramount), because some episodes have a TNG/TOS feel to them.
The Pitt (HBO, IMO the best current TV series) for many reasons, including 15-episode seasons - very unique in this economy. Another plus is that Gen Z daughter loves the show too!
snarpy@reddit
The Pitt is so very ER coded, just updated for a newer vibe. It's really good and I love it.
yevbaby@reddit
NYT had an article last year re. how it was originally meant to be a sequel to ER but they couldn't reach terms with the estate of the original creator and they changed it just enough to clear legal. Not enough apparently b/c the estate is suing.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Michael Crichton had something to do with ER, didn't he? Is that where the tangle is?
Sithstress_@reddit
I’m so sad they cancelled Poker Face.
devo0630@reddit
Crap, I didn’t know. That sucks.
Sithstress_@reddit
It does, it was fun! They’ve stated they may bring it back with a different lead, but I only started watching it because of Natasha Lyonne so 50/50 on me giving it a shot. 🤷🏻♀️
devo0630@reddit
Agreed
hardbittercandy@reddit
why would they replace her?
Gelmom@reddit
I read that she recently went back to treatment after a relapse, so I would imagine it has something to do with that. It wouldn’t be the same without her.
Sithstress_@reddit
🤷🏻♀️ I thought she was some kind of producer on it as well.
Tondropper186@reddit
It seems to be jeopardy and wheel of fortune for me
Xyzzydude@reddit
Those are most popular with Boomers. We enjoy them but they aren’t aimed at us.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Now that they both have Gen-X hosts, I beg to differ. Fun fact: Wheel Of Fortune's executive producer? Her dad is Blackstone, the TV magician.
Disemboweledgoat@reddit
The weather channel.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Oh, are YOU in for a treat.
MartinMcFly55@reddit
Along with storm chasers.
thatgirl46and2@reddit
If I’m not watching police body cam on YouTube my rotation is Golden Girls, Frasier, and OLD Roseanne episodes. I like universal entertainment, not woke entertainment.
KaiDaniel1966@reddit
Rosanne is OG Woke.
thatgirl46and2@reddit
So is Golden Girls, actually. Lol.
throwaway-for-me897@reddit
lol
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
I’ve been rewatching the OG run of Night Court. It still holds up. Amazing comedy. Great cast and writing. It’s a shame the reboot couldn’t fill the shoes of the original.
TheWalkingDev@reddit
Its sad how many people from that era are gone
TheJokersChild@reddit
What is it, John Larroquette and Marsha Warfield, right? They're the only two left?
Epicassion@reddit
Every year there’s more. Reinforces other signs of aging.
JustMeOttawa@reddit
Shrinking, The Pitt, Matlock, and a few Canadian shows I love: North of North, St. Pierre, Son of a Critch, Schitt’s Creek, Kim’s Convenience.
TheJokersChild@reddit
The new Kathy Bates Matlock, I presum,e.
CorrectCondition9458@reddit
Mutual of Omaha wild kingdom. It’s on every Sunday morning on METV. They also have METVTOONS. Can never get too much road runner and duck dodgers.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Duck Dodgers and the 24th and a halbphthph...CEN-TURY!
johnnyg2019@reddit
For the ER and The Pitt fans;
Catch EMERGENCY! on Peacock. It’s amazing how much of that show was filmed on location with actual Los Angles Fire Department trucks. “Squad 51. 10-4. KMG 365.”
What is more, the guy who voiced the Dispatcher in the show was an actual Los Angeles county dispatcher.
TheJokersChild@reddit
It's on your local MeTV channel, too. 5 Eastern. They're back to the first season right now. Streaming it myself. Fascinating show for a lot of reasons.
Snikle-fritz@reddit
I rewatched EMERGENCY a couple months ago and got lost in the nostalgia of the old cars, clothing styles etc… I was also an EMT in my college years so it was interesting to see some of the medical procedures and how we’ve evolved since that era.
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
Cobra Kai
optimal-gold976@reddit
Your Friends and Neighbors on HBO is really good.
mild_shart_attack@reddit
It’s actually on Apple, but yes it’s good.
Eman_Asiti@reddit
I have really been enjoying Ghost. Like a true Gen X-er... both the American and Great Britain version.
Static66@reddit
There is also one from AU, if you didn't know.
Comfortable-Ad-8324@reddit
Ghosts is GREAT.
flopsadoodie@reddit
Duster. Cancelled after one season and that's a CRIME, dammit. So, SO unapologetically late 70s/early 80s you'll smell Agree shampoo.
Spirited-Cat-8942@reddit
OMG! Agree shampoo was the BEST! I wish they still made it (or a shampoo with that scent)!
threedogdad@reddit
rewatching Twin Peaks for the 3rd time. it's excellent, again :)
xpert_98@reddit

WeirdCry7403@reddit
The four seasons on Netflix is only a handful of episodes, but good and very relatable.
Accomplished_West292@reddit
Season 2 is in the works!
CromulentPoint@reddit
I just keep rewatching MAS*H.
Responsible_Mall_112@reddit
The Pitt, Shrinking, Your Friends and Neighbors, For All Mankind is my current list.
TC_Stock@reddit
Just discovered Your Friends and Neighbors. I'm only 3 episodes in but this show is phenomenal so far. I don't understand why it seems to be under the radar. This the best thing I've seen Jon Hamm in since Mad Men and the writing is top tier.
Responsible_Mall_112@reddit
Apple TV is still slept on by a large amount of people.
DoookieMaxx@reddit
I’ve been watching “Person of Interest”
Jim Caviezel absolutely rocks this show. If you’re not familiar …it’s an early 2000’s “surveillance state” action drama at its finest.
Practical_Wind_1917@reddit
Only down side is that in real life Jim Caviezel is batshit crazy
CustersGhost1876@reddit
No he isn’t.
Practical_Wind_1917@reddit
Yes he is. He believes a lot of crazy shit
CustersGhost1876@reddit
Believing in God isn’t “a lot of crazy shit” , try harder. Or is that the best you can do?
Practical_Wind_1917@reddit
I didn't say it was
I said he was batshit crazy. Big difference there
If you are taking it as me attacking him for his faith. Then this issue is you. Not me
CustersGhost1876@reddit
Right…but throwing random claims out there without supportive evidence and being specific about what you’re referring to is super well thought out and logical and mature. What’s your source, trust me bro? lol..
Capsicumgirl@reddit
It's crazy what they got right
RedSparrow1971@reddit
It’s crazy that he went so crazy
Zandor72@reddit
Person of Interest was a fantastic watch. I wish they had made another season...
MinimumAnalysis5378@reddit
Resident Alien with Alan Tudyk is great.
TestForPotential@reddit
Everything Tudyk is great imo. Chuck and Dale vs Evil was fantastic. And he’s awesome in all the animated DC stuff.
MinimumAnalysis5378@reddit
Con Man (a fictional version of his experiences at fan conventions) is also great.
Excellent_Tangerine3@reddit
Needs more seasons. I already miss that show.
YesMaybeYesWriteNow@reddit
Check out Rooster on HBO. Steve Carrell is an early Gen X who is a successful author who teaches a class on a college campus. Mayhem ensues.
melonfarmermike@reddit
Seconded, it was an enjoyable story.
user0987234@reddit
Shrinking, Pluribus, Ted Lasso, My Son Todd, St Pierre (CBC)
And you might notice a shift from entertainment to more documentaries and pure comedy. The NetFlix “Cunk on…” mockumentaries are funny.
WeirdCry7403@reddit
I love your first three. You've obviously got good taste. I'll have to check out the last two.
wyldstrawberry@reddit
DTF St Louis (on HBO) is the best show I’ve seen this year. It stars Jason Bateman, David Harbour and Linda Cardellini. I’d say it’s aimed at our age group.
stonefree261@reddit
Geez Linda Cardellini just gets hotter with age.
reepobob@reddit
Can you speak up?
Consistent-Bee9738@reddit
No way, Jose.
skinisblackmetallic@reddit
Too Old to Die Young has a real Lynch vibe.
Infamous-Yak2864@reddit
Not new, but decided to watch Mad Men for the first time...think it's pretty amazing.
AnyaSatana@reddit
Its beautifully designed too. I could watch it just for the visuals.
Infamous-Yak2864@reddit
💯
CeilingUnlimited@reddit
Just finished Handmaids Tale. So great. And they stuck the landing!
Starting Paradise on Hulu.
Prior to The Handmaids Tale, we did full rewatches of West Wing and then Frasier.
debvil@reddit
St Louis DTF: mid life crises for everyone!
mc_atx@reddit
This show is so fucked up we loved it.
doobette@reddit
I'd watch Jason Bateman read the dictionary.
Katiew18@reddit
The Pitt. Landman Imperfect women
johnnyg2019@reddit
These are Series I started watching on Amazon and they dropped them before I could finish watching all episodes: Ally McBeal, Northern Exposure (was halfway through last season), Schitts Creek(right after Catherine O’Hara died, switched it to pay extra)

Call the Midwife
johnnyg2019@reddit
Yes! I wish I had Sr. Monica Joan’s vocabulary.
GeorgiaYankee73@reddit
Soooooooo good.
blackpony04@reddit
I haven't seen much specifically aimed at our generation in a long time. The early seasons of Stranger Things was full blown 80s nostalgia overload which I really enjoyed, but even that faded away by the last season.
As a gamer, I really enjoy Fallout and Walton Goggins is definitely one of us at 54. Otherwise, the vast majority of the other shows are dominated by Boomers or under 40 actors.
Also, my wife and I spend a lot of time watching HGTV shows so she can get ideas for projects I don't have the knowledge or ability to complete but apparently will learn in retirement.
Leeleewithwings@reddit

Maybe The Rookie because of its late 40s protagonist entering the LAPD as a career change.
blackpony04@reddit
Wife and I watch that because Nathan Fillion is awesome, but the show went off the rails and everyone is now Special Forces versions of cops. The rest of the cast with a couple of exceptions are also all under 40.

All the Taylor Sheridan shows. Yellowstone, Lioness, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, The Madison, 1883, 1923
Love Resident Alien….hilarious!
SnooRadishes1376@reddit
You hit the nail on the head with Taylor Sheridan shows! We've watched every single one!
Lopsided_Parfait7127@reddit
That's boomer stuff, not gen x Unless you're old enough to practically be a boomer
SnooRadishes1376@reddit
Some of it maybe but we're firmly GenX, 1969. It's older actors we all grew up with plus a few GenX personalities if they aren't our age plus great storytelling.
Also YIKES don't compare us to Boomers. Gag me with a spoon haha
threedogdad@reddit
huh. the only time I hear about the taylor stuff at all is from boomers.
goteed@reddit
LOVE The Pitt, but honestly it took a few shows to get there. Part of this is that I'm an editor by trade and the pace of the editing on that show is like trying to drink from a firehose!! It comes at you so fast that I needed time to acclimate to it. But yes, I totally agree, that is a bloody brilliant show!!
Hungry_Scarcity_4500@reddit
Slow Horses , The Pitt , hating Carrie on Sex and the City I didn’t watch it when it first came out.
MK_ULTRA2point0@reddit
Slow Horses!! Gary Olman is the greatest disgusting man. I would watch that series again and again.
Hungry_Scarcity_4500@reddit
People don’t know what they’re missing with Slow Horses…The best .
katie0873@reddit
The Americans 💯 The hair, makeup, clothes. They did the show so well. I wish they would do a spin-off or a follow-up season. I miss all the characters.
Palm Royale
Stranger Things (sometimes)
I was housesitting recently and was surprised that I fell into a Little House on the Prairie hole that I enjoyed more than I thought I would
Xyzzydude@reddit
The entire 1980s NBC Thursday night lineup
Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court, Hill Street Blues
GasmaskTed@reddit
Pretty sure no one’s marketing Cosby right now, but please let me know if I’m wrong
Xyzzydude@reddit
True dat. I followed the drift of this thread from current marketing to TV nostalgia.
GasmaskTed@reddit
I mean there have been sequel shows to Night Court and Cheers on tv in the last few years, and I see the originals plus Family Ties on broadcast digital sub channels , so you’re not exactly off (except Cosby, and maybe HSB).
Initial_Run1632@reddit
Pluribus! Omg just watch it
A few years old now, but Pamela Adlon in Better Things is Deeply GenX
And, for campy 80s nostalgia, kinda lowbrow: Acapulco
FatBackButterBeans@reddit
I realize this may fall ever so slightly away from the question, but I feel compelled to notify anyone who hasn’t seen Mind Hunter, stop what you’re doing and go do that right now. It’s the GenXiest GenX television since I don’t know when. If you don’t have Netflix, just get it, you can cancel it at the end of the month cuz it won’t take you that long to watch both seasons, and then you can join us in collectively being angry at David Fincher for abandoning us.
On the second watch thru I just totally skipped any portion dealing with Bill’s family life and that was just further proof that I am, in fact, a genius. Happy Ed Kempering.
UnicornSlayer5000@reddit
The show is so good! Im so sad it got canceled.
Cake_Donut1301@reddit
The Lowdown was great. Stranger Things.

Ted Lasso. Lots of tv, movie and music references that go over the heads of tge youngsters.
AdBig9909@reddit
Ted Lasso. My friends who quote it are assholes with no real self awareness. They WANT to be cool, they WANT to be seen as cool but can't stop thinking snark and judgement is the same as questions and examination. Compare and contrast isn't the same as open with bitch.
It would be so cool if they made the connections, but no, more Ted Lasso quotes and false self reflection.

My favorite show of all time! It still breaks my heart that it was cancelled after 2 seasons, since there was so much more story to tell. It's a few years old but iZombie targeted GenX. It will probably never come out on dvd because of the genuine new wave soundtrack. It's hugely entertaining once it gets going. The first season finale had me laughing so hard due to the antics combined with the music. Later on there is a character named Dale Bozzio. It's unapologetic about aiming at GenX, which I loved. Also Veronica Mars fans.
Columbo. The good eps are from before our time but I spent part of the 90s watching it on the A&E channel. It's my comfort show. Maybe that's just me though.
craftygal1989@reddit

We did that recently for the first time. My religious parents were not gonna be caught dead watching that show. We are now working our way through Frasier. Recently watched How to Get to Heave from Belfast on Netflix and loved it. It's created by the same person who made Derry Girls (which I also loved), she's born in 1980 at the tail end of Gen X, and most the actors in the show are Gen X.
Another good one is The Change, which was created, written and starring a lady born in 1971.
Other than that, we watch a lot of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, just like we did growing up.

Farscape, which ran from 1999 to 2003 with a follow-up miniseries to tie up loose ends. The cast was a mixture of Boomers and GenX, and it was rife with pop culture references of the time.

Stranger Things, Shetland, and…I hate to admit it but I did buy Muppet Show dvds to show our son when he was little. I’ve been, um, rewatching a few. Some are just weird 70s figures that don’t translate well but others are brilliant old actors and actresses.
NelsonMuntz3@reddit
Ted Lasso is fantastic. Shogun, Reacher, and Fallout were all well written and acted.
For pure GenX I dont give a fuck vibe, my hero is Loudermilk. Says all the shit I think but my brain still filters.
froction@reddit
Silo is excellent, as well.
We thought Reacher was good for a season, OK, for the next, then unwatchably bad.
spintool1995@reddit
Interesting premise, but the pacing is easy too slow and I normally like a slow pace. Season 2 is a slog.
Magerimoje@reddit

youngkpepper@reddit
DH and I are big Loudermilk fans. I haven't given up hope for a 4th season, but my optimism is fading.

I really enjoyed Season 1 and 2. Jennifer Lawrence was hysterical.
Frigidspinner@reddit
I am watching "for all mankind" and it does a good job of taking us through all these decades of our lives from the 1970s onwards as the seasons progress, with lots of news clips and "alternative histories" around events of our life
darthjazno@reddit
Really enjoy the alternate history but the romantic drama just doesn’t work for me.
yorkiemom68@reddit
Agreed, partner and I thought some of the episodes were a little too soap opera
Objective-Badger8674@reddit

Ok_Driver8646@reddit
What an assorted list! I don’t watch any of those. 🤣🤣 I didn’t watch much TV from my 20-48yrs.
On the Telie:
Schitts Creek (huge Catherine O’Hara & Eugene Levy fan) the whole cast are such amazing actors and the writing (Daniel Levy) is superb. He is v talented.
Rookie (cop show) -run of the mill show with silly cheesy drama & relationships. Love the cop insight. Thanks to those of you whom are police officials
MLS - it’s so easy to watch now. I fricken hate cableTV. It’s such a scam. 🤣🤣
yorkiemom68@reddit
If you like Daniel Levy, there is a new show on Netflix called Big Mistakes. It’s fun!
StressMysterious7530@reddit
The Rookie, Will Trent and Grey's Anatomy are the only network shows left even close to worth watching.

Gary Oldman is fucking brilliant in that show. Most recent season was the weakest of the series, though. I’m hoping the next one is better.
Puzzleheaded_Sea5976@reddit
He’s been bringing it for Gen X since forever…Sid and Nancy, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Fifth Element. Then he went full circle back to the heart of our Gen X childhoods and reimagined Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight trilogy. Gary FUCKIN’ Oldham!
swentech@reddit
For sure. I love this show a little extra because Jackson Lamb is very similar to a guy I worked for early out of college. British, brilliant, poor hygiene. Gave no fucks about anything and would insult anyone regardless of race creed or color. When I pitch this show to people that know him I say Jasckson Lamb is basically Art! As an aside there is a Netflix show called Depr Q that copied this format and is also not bad. One season of that.
darth-vagrant@reddit
It’s a few years old now, but you can’t beat all of the 80’s pop culture references in _The Venture Brothers_.

DTF St Louis is such a great show and definitely for Gen X. My only complaint was that the season/series didn’t have more episodes.
I’d say you could also put the new season of Beef in this category. The show has an ensemble cast that includes 2 couples. One of them is a Gen X/Older Millennial couple with a story line that seems to target Gen X.
