I still remember using the code feature and thinking it was hilarious what ALDV translated to. Funny thing is I remember the code but can't remember if it translated to shit or fuck. I also had Speak and Math....not as fun.

I like how it said the letter B. Idk why but it was different than the other letters.

After a while I mostly just made it repeat the alert sounds over and over. My favorite was that really complex one with the lower notes, I was always trying to cycle around to that one
Fyreflyre1@reddit
I still have mine and it still works!
VnlaThndr775@reddit
I had one but I think it was faulty, It would ask me to spell "relief", I would type in R-O-L-A-I-D-S, and it would say I was incorrect!

I still make thise sounds to myself quietly sometimes, or remember when it shamed me into spelling correctly.
THAT IS INCORRECT. THE CORRECT SPELLING IF "BUREAU" IS B-U-R-E-A-U. BUREAU.
And I still can't spell bureau, I had to look it up for this comment.

I had a Speak & Math and loved it (nerd)

I remember in elementary school, probably 2nd grade?, if it was an indoor recess day we would get to play games. There was one speak & spell and everyone wanted it. Thankfully it wasn’t a free for all because it would have been brutal.
Also how I learned to love Strateggo

Playing with this is one of the memories that has survived all these years. Not much else, unfortunately. Lots of concussions will do that i suppose.

I can hear this picture. I remember having this…I had a love hate relationship with it, but I was a great speller 🤣

You must of had the Speak & Math
pickledpetunia@reddit
I had that… every time you made an incorrect choice, it would say, “make the trade “ whatever the hell that means
Vast-Hold6578@reddit
My sister and I had each. She had the math one and I had the spelling one. We also had a Simon and the weird little professor one.

I loved it. My favorite toy ever.

I have one and use it as a musical instrument. It's a circuit bent version which means the electronics are modified to produce strange sounds. It can still function like a normal speak n spell.

Reminds me of ET. It wanted him to spell it when he was playing with it

😈When the battery started to die is would say random words and sounded possessed. I remember leaving it on the kitchen floor, sobbing backing away from it while it spoke non stop gibberish because I thought it was possessed by demons 🤣 wild imagination!

I saw a guy on Carson who did a comedy routine with a Speak & Spell. If anybody knows where I can watch that again, let me know.

I still hear it regularly. It makes a pre-recorded appearance in the emergency broadcast “intermission” in Doomcock’s weekly livestream series “Friday Night Frolics” on the Overlord DVD YouTube channel.
(BTW I feel it’s probably appropriate to say: in case anyone here on Reddit has heard of Doomcock and is predisposed to dislike him or even just be wary of him due to his place in the culture war, you should probably know that his Friday streams are topically separate from the rest of his channel! They’re just focused on having fun and lifting people’s spirits through songs & skits & chatting positively with his viewers, whom he genuinely treats like FRIENDS. Doomcock is one of the nicest content creators on all of YouTube, in terms of how he interacts with people. And he has the voice of an angel!!!👼🏻
I don’t know his exact age since his identity is a carefully guarded secret, but I think he’s a little older than a Xennial, probably early 50’s; he seems to remember seeing Star Wars in its original theatrical run.)
