Good Choice of Recovery Strap or Should I Buy Elsewhere? Or Should I Buy a Recovery Rope?

I’m not an avid off-roader but I’d like to have some gear on standby for the occasional pulling of something. Such as a tree, stuck ATV, or small tractor. Would this be an okay choice to keep or should I return and invest in a recovery rope?
monstertruck567@reddit
4/5 times I need to get someone unstuck I use my Amazon 3” by 30’ nylon strap. In my life, people have just needed a little nudge to get out. Sure there are times for a higher energy recovery and a winch or kinetic rope is needed, but I always go for the lowest energy, fewest variable pulls first. And the basic strap does the job.
DrPepper523@reddit
I used my Eno hammock straps one time to get my car out of the mud one time and it worked just fine 😅
MapleLettuce@reddit
You should get a kinetic rope, if you or someone else needs to get pulled out with acceleration, you want something with elasticity and not a static strap.
iFunny-Escapee@reddit (OP)
Thank you Chief, I very well may just go that route and return this strap.
JCDU@reddit
Just be aware kinteics are dangerous as fuck because of the forces they can build up - it's like a giant elastic band, you DO NOT want it to twang back, especially it it's bringing a broken tow point along with it.
innkeeper_77@reddit
5mph speed limit on those, us being safe with what its attached to, etc.. Seriously.
And NO TOW BALLS! Those with kinetics HAVE killed people.
chaffed@reddit
Watch some Cascade Heavy Rescue (Casey Ladel), Matt's offroad recovery, and Murphy's diesel.
shorty5windows@reddit
Those aren’t the best examples of how to do safe recoveries. Full throttle slack rope yanks hooked to a pintle hitch always gets a chuckle out of me.
laserguidedhacksaw@reddit
Agreed. Haven’t watched the others but Matt talks a lot about safety for how little he actually shows it
shorty5windows@reddit
He definitely knows he does sketchy stuff. I always cringe when his kids and crew ride on the back of the wrecker through rough terrain.
Halfbaked9@reddit
I remember watching one of Matt’s videos where he mentions all the comments on how he should wear safety glasses. So he goes to put on his safety glasses and pokes himself in the eye with them. I had a good laugh on that one.
Halfbaked9@reddit
Also watch Colt builds it, Fab Rats and Trailmater. They all use kinetic ropes. They also say the cheap straps and ropes are not as good as the expensive ones that they have but they use their stuff to the extreme. Just remember you get what you pay for.
Keep the strap and get a kinetic rope and soft shackles.
Geem750@reddit
Keep the strap. They are handy for other reasons. If the stuck person is too far in the muck, this can be used to extend your length with the kinetic rope
iFunny-Escapee@reddit (OP)
I guess in all fairness it’s not that much money ($24) it wouldn’t be necessarily a bad idea to keep it for more mundane tasks.
AccomplishedRip4632@reddit
I would keep it, as stated before it is a good option for other things. As a static anchor point for a winch line, as a tow rope to redover a dead vehicle, extending your reach with other recovery gear, tree saver, there are a lot of things this would be good for.
Before you get a kenetic rope, do some research in the proper size and utilization of a kenetic rope. Armed with that information will keep you from buying the wrong size, and when you need it you will better understand how/why it works. I used mine to pull out a boom truck (roughly 30,000lbs) with my jeep (5,400lbs) it worked like a charm. I personally have the rhino usa kenetic rope and I would do it again, a little more pricey than others but it has warranty and for gear that I know im going to abuse and break thats worth it to me.
dextroses@reddit
Yeah at that price just keep it, they are handy to have around. Pick up some cheap shackles too in case you need them. You'll want soft shackles for pulling on things.
iFunny-Escapee@reddit (OP)
I bought some soft shackles with it for the safety factor. I ain’t taking any chances with metal
Agitated_Mess3117@reddit
Or wrapped around a tree for a nice anchor to wing from. You’ll need a soft shackle. Make sure to watch some recovery videos and learn how to safely tie and winch as it can be extremely dangerous and possibly deadly.
AnonymousSpelunking@reddit
Comes in handy too in heavy pulling situations just to link to another vehicle as an added anchor. I keep a couple on hand for this reason.
TheDude-Esquire@reddit
I keep both, but after a couple of group outings in the snow, it became obvious how useful the kinetic is. I keep the toe strap for if I have to move trees (until I actually get a winch).
Burnt_Timber_1988@reddit
Keep it. These come in handy as tree savers and under-vehicle tow shackles. Then the kinetic rope can soften the pull. Double over either or both to multiple tow points or to make a sliding sling.
OneAd4085@reddit
I went to a local welding and mechanical shop and bough some pretty good quality strap , shackles and come along for under 300$. I definitely use my kinetic energy strap more then anything else tho
Mm11vV@reddit
If you're going to go cheap, have a backup plan as well.
I have 2 kinetic ropes of different lengths, 2 different length/width straps, 4 soft shackles, 3 d-links, a Y strap, a J hook with a chain, a snatch block and 100ft of 40klb synthetic rope.
Now granted that's overkill for most people, and some of that (the rope and snatch block) sees more use clearing trees off of trails than it does recovering vehicles.
But everything gets used more often than you'd expect.
JCDU@reddit
I wouldn't buy recovery gear off Amazon full stop, this shit is safety critical. They can hardly be trusted to sell a pair of bunny slippers that would pass product safety tests.
There's enough real suppliers out there who know their shit and will sell stuff you can actually believe someone has tested.
10before15@reddit
Bubba Rope.....thats what you want
My Bubba rope has saved me and many others more times than my winch ever has. Easy to deploy and hella effect.
DailyDrivenTJ@reddit
Kinetic rope with soft shackles. Make sure you have frame mounted and capable tow points. Not those screw into bumper cover eye bolt.
JukeRedlin@reddit
Strap for pulling something that won't move on its own
Rope for something that won't move because its stuck
Lazy_Mud_1616@reddit
This is the right answer. You need both.
In fact, it depends on how or why someone is stuck. If it's mud, then you use a rope. If you are rock crawling, then you need the slow steady pull of a strap or else you can end up rubber banding someone into a bad situation (please don't launch your friends over a cliff, because they are tied to you and will pull you right down with).
laserguidedhacksaw@reddit
Absolutely agreed. I love that basic tow straps are getting more well known for not being for everything, but it’s wild that so many people seem to think a kinetic rope is the answer to everything as well. Carry both if you really want to keep people moving safely.
beeedubdub@reddit
Lot of physicists on here. For the use cases OP mentioned, this is fine. No need for a $200+ kinetic rope. You could also build your rig out of titanium but it’s expensive and not what OP asked
spank_the_tank@reddit
You can get a kinetic rope for $50-$60 and it is far safer than a tow strap.
Lazy_Mud_1616@reddit
No, a kinetic rope is not always safer. Kinetic ropes are fantastic for mud and sand but downright dangerous rock crawling. You need both types depending on the situation.
iFunny-Escapee@reddit (OP)
The strap is advertised as a recovery strap, not a tow strap in this case. I made sure to consider that with my purchase.
spank_the_tank@reddit
The kinetic rope is rated for 3x as much weight but you do you homie. It should work.
iFunny-Escapee@reddit (OP)
I’m aware
Bright-Bluebird-593@reddit
Use that one man, it doesnt sound like you are in a situation where a static strap is going to be less useful. Everyone used this type of strap up till about 15 years ago and everything was just fine lol
I did snag a Bubba rope when those came out and its really nice 🤷♂️
beeedubdub@reddit
One with the break strength of what looks like 3”not the one that’s the price you quoted
GunRunner2111Z@reddit
Keep the strap, but definitely invest in a rope, safer and overall better
magniankh@reddit
I personally would not buy recovery gear from Amazon, but I also do not know if Keeper is a respected brand?
Schnee-Coraxx@reddit
My harbor freight strap has been amazing.
throwaway72592309@reddit
Harbor freight is so underrated. I bought a pressure washer there and it lasted me a solid 3 years with heavy use. It finally died and they replaced it with the condition I pay $15 for the warranty even though I hadn’t purchased a warranty originally
dasmineman@reddit
Hang on to this but regardless of which brand/type you get, try to keep them out of the sand and grit best you can. Sand gets in between the fibers and destroys from the inside. Also, don't snatch with this, only static loads.
NiftyOctopus448@reddit
Like others have said this strap has its purpose and advantages and for the price isn't a bad deal while adding a kinetic rope you should be more than covered
spank_the_tank@reddit
Please don’t use those tow straps. Please get a kinetic rope and soft shackles. You can buy a kit from Vevor for like $70
southpark@reddit
Yankum kinetic ropes and soft shackles, Matt’s off road recovery uses them pretty much exclusively and he talks about the difference in capability and safety
Sinfluencer666@reddit
Look into the brands Factor55, ARB, Yankum, or BubbaRope for a kinetic recovery rope or recovery goods. Keep in mind you'll want something reputable that you may have to trust your life with.
darkstar909@reddit
Depends what you’re planning to do. Pulling cars stuck in snow? Sure no problem. Deep mud recovery? I’d get a kinetic rope. I’d have no problem using this for your intended uses.
Qwell41@reddit
I don’t think this is something I would buy on Amazon.
