We hung out with breaking Benjamin’s at the bar they played at, we bought them beers and had a great time. It was before polyamorous came out. They were nobodies, lead singer Benjamin burley is a wierd dude. Ahaha. Great memory with college rooommates.
Similar, except I didn't really know any of their music (like 1 song) and went to a show with a friend and had the best time! They are great live! So much so that we are seeing them again in a few months.
Somehow it completely missed my friends and me. I’m Canadian too, if that makes a difference. The only poker song we were signing and playing all the time was Kenny Rodgers - The Gambler, to the point where it was our unofficial grad song.
Left school in 2001 and this was playing everywhere. Went back to school in a different state in 2007, on a late night walk I heard this pumping from a house party, and I just knew-knew I was back in it.
Was Grateful Dead not Grateful Dead of our gen? Man, our classes were obsessed. They even put GD lyrics on our grad shirts. Never heard this song before.
I’ll probably get downvoted to oblivion, but I cannot listen to this song anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it back in my 20s. However, it’s just not there for me anymore as a 45 year old man. It makes me cringe.
Worked in a deli on campus during college and from like 2001-2003 this was our regular closing song. Like every random-ass burned CD some over-sexed environmental science major brought into work had this as the last song.
I will always love it, if only for that memory.
I saw John layers first tour where he played and they closed for him. Never understood the appeal of this band since they sounded like every single other band at my college.
While I do love their recorded work, I have a bit of a sore spot for them. My ex wife and I went to see them at St. Lawrence University and they were (even getting past the long lines for searching), not good.
I never heard of the
Until 2004 where my grad students roommate played that lame song crazy game of poker. He was like 5 years younger, and in the 90s no one even talked about them
Loved OAR and recently rediscovered them over the past week. Looked at the discography and is it just me or did they have many songs that were on multiple albums? Like each album had songs from the previous cds. Confusing as hell
This song was MY JAM in high school. It was non stop this, 311 and Dave Matthew’s.
A bit of a non sequitur, but I’m getting to see Dave Matthew’s next month 20 years to the day I saw him for the first time, and in the same Amphitheater! Can’t wait!
This song came out in 1997. I was in high school. It was in college when the second and third albums were out and way too many beers were drunk with this song (and other O.A.R songs playing). And games of poker. Soo many memories.
In 2003 or 4 some buddies and I snuck into a concert in Georgetown using our military IDs saying we were with security and to not make a scene because we were undercover. What a night.
They neve4 had a shot with me. Went to Alien Ant Farm, OAR, and 311 back in like 2003. Enjoyed AAF but they only got like 20 minutes and then I just wanted to hurry through and get to 311. OAR came on and after 20 minutes said "this is our last song." I was so pumped until I watched nearly 20 minutes tick off the analog clock in the Providence Civic Center during this one song. Looking back it was a great bit but I did not appreciate it at the time.

Wow. A corona and a puka shell necklace just appeared
dubvmtneer@reddit
I went to high school in MoCo Maryland from 2000-2004 and this band was a big local favorite (they are from the area).
lucidspoon@reddit
I think they were in college in Ohio the same time as me in Indiana, and they'd do shows on our campus.
scott743@reddit
They went to OSU, saw them last January at the 2025 NHL Stadium Series game.
Daytonewheel@reddit
I saw them there too. It was so cold that day.
scott743@reddit
I had multiple layers on and was still freezing. I don’t understand how the people just wearing a hoody and jersey didn’t get hypothermia.
SleepyDoozer2@reddit
Got to interview OAR and Breaking Benjamin for my college paper right before their show at our campus. It was a crap article but amazing experience.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
We hung out with breaking Benjamin’s at the bar they played at, we bought them beers and had a great time. It was before polyamorous came out. They were nobodies, lead singer Benjamin burley is a wierd dude. Ahaha. Great memory with college rooommates.
ralph_deadbeet@reddit
Unpopular opinion here it seems but whenever this one pops up on my 90s playlist, I cringe my pants.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
OAR was controversial, (for not being a controversial band). Ya either love the early years or ya just never got on board. I get it.
pushdose@reddit
I didn’t really like them but my brother convinced me to go to a show and they were much more fun live. Actually, a lot of fun live.
Adventurous_Pin_344@reddit
I feel that way about the Disco Biscuits. Like, I hate the recorded music, but had a blast at the show!
entermemo@reddit
They Missed the Perfume is a really good studio album.
amayain@reddit
I mean- that's true of most jam bands =)
Adventurous_Pin_344@reddit
Agreed. Except for King Gizzard. But I wouldn't classify them as a jam band, per se. What I would classify them as is another story all together...
FADEMCFADEY@reddit
So much truth in such a small amount of words.
BeBopBarr@reddit
Similar, except I didn't really know any of their music (like 1 song) and went to a show with a friend and had the best time! They are great live! So much so that we are seeing them again in a few months.
Mr_Gray@reddit
Same. Went to Ocean's calling and wasnt looking forward to them playing daily. I was wrong.
Weather was absolute ass, though.
Staggerlee024@reddit
I have never heard this song before. I don't think it's an xennial thing
WendyPortledge@reddit
I’d call it Gen X as it came out in 1997. I never heard of the band or the song as an ‘83 millennial.
likesexonlycheaper@reddit
I'm '85 and I heard this song everywhere in highschool
WendyPortledge@reddit
Somehow it completely missed my friends and me. I’m Canadian too, if that makes a difference. The only poker song we were signing and playing all the time was Kenny Rodgers - The Gambler, to the point where it was our unofficial grad song.
deowolf@reddit
That might be the difference. You were too hyped up on the Tragically Hip (and rightfully so - they're infinitely better).
WendyPortledge@reddit
lol, not in my circle of friends, but we definitely know who they are, unlike OAR.
nikolai813@reddit
I live in Columbus now and still see them every time they play in town.
illini02@reddit
This song just SCREAMS college to me.
seminarysmooth@reddit
Left school in 2001 and this was playing everywhere. Went back to school in a different state in 2007, on a late night walk I heard this pumping from a house party, and I just knew-knew I was back in it.
LarryGoldwater@reddit
Some people tried to make them the Grateful Dead of our generation.
Nah, it was fine but nah
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
That’s been phish for a loooong time, pre OAR time even
amayain@reddit
Phish really just is their own thing. I fucking love the Dead but can't stand Phish (not knocking them; they just aren't my thing).
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
I’m in agreement with you…
WendyPortledge@reddit
Was Grateful Dead not Grateful Dead of our gen? Man, our classes were obsessed. They even put GD lyrics on our grad shirts. Never heard this song before.
Aggravating-Toe-1479@reddit
Fuck this song
Psychological-Web134@reddit
i just added this my playlist for today. Classic.
No-Gas5342@reddit
What a moment in time that was
Themoosemingled@reddit
I discovered this later on from a fellow deadhead.
Love it.
jdsmith575@reddit
A friend recommended this and it took awhile but I learned to love it. Can’t listen to any of their other albums though.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
There new stuff is a Nono. I like the first three albums. And so much fun in concert.
lost_horizons@reddit
Same for me, 4th album on were pretty bad but I loved the early stuff.
sgrams04@reddit
Listening to OAR while playing Snood.
lost_horizons@reddit
Wow, snood, I loved that shit. Wonder if I could find a version of it now for old times sake
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
Oh wow!! Snood. That remember that now. Good call
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Such a shame… I loved OAR then they did this whole pop genre push thing. Re-did their same songs but with a “hits radio” tempo and style… it was gross
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
Exactly! Lived there first albums. Love it. Then they evolved into radio pop junk and lost most of their original fanbase
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Reassuring to see at least 1 other person was on my wavelength
spuldup@reddit
I literally found a big ass black rock out in the woods where I'd take my gen1 ipod and jam out to this album and smoke weed. Good times.

FoostersG@reddit
Summer after senior year of high school. Lots of day drinking and ripping cigs while blasting this song. Not a fucking care in the world
ohmbrew@reddit
I had like an 8 hr drive whenever I went home from college. Blasted that song so much on my car stereo that could play CDs of mp3s.
Aught_To@reddit
yeah, our Rugby team was often shitfaced singing this one at top volume.
Due-Blackberry8056@reddit
Such a bloody great song, and yes, you had to be a freshman in college. lol
Heavy_Pin7735@reddit
The song defines my 20s - know every word, would sing all 13 minutes of it with friends at any bar…just love it!
karatechop97@reddit
Saw them live in Maryland around 2000. They seemed like a regional band at the time. Did they break out nationally?
macrocosm93@reddit
Not really.
They were more like a college radio band.
FluffusMaximus@reddit
I’ll probably get downvoted to oblivion, but I cannot listen to this song anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it back in my 20s. However, it’s just not there for me anymore as a 45 year old man. It makes me cringe.
AvocadoToastFailure@reddit
LOL, this is one of 5 or 6 cds we had in our vehicle while I was deployed. *Crazy Game of Poker* makes me feel spicy now.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
Naw, no downvotes. It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. No song or band is for everyone.
I have never gotten into the show Seinfeld. Never.
FluffusMaximus@reddit
Dude, same. There are some episodes I definitely find funny, but I could never follow the show. It didn’t capture my attention.

Every band has off nights. I’ve seen them several times and they’ve never missed.
Any Time Now, their first live album, is solid gold IMHO.
Maybe give them another chance?
SavageObjector@reddit
Were we supposed to stop listening to this or something?
nudave@reddit
20 bucks says you also had a lot of Dispatch and Guster on your playlists.

These guys played the front yard of my frat house in 1999 before they were big. Oh, and my friend used to sell them Coke at OSU.
Fun times!
Goose80@reddit
Reggae fest was a good time.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)
It was the best years. When they were getting popular jamming out at frats.
Goose80@reddit
I think I was one of the first people to start recording them at OSU. If you had a live CD of Springfest, Ludlow, or BW3s… you’re welcome. :)
Bswerves@reddit
Gateway band into cooler bands

Context?
straightblather@reddit
OAR is a band. "That Was A Crazy Game of Poker" was one of their, if not the most, popular song.
georgecm12@reddit
Really? I don't think I've ever heard that song (or even heard OF it). On the other hand, I've heard "Shattered" and "This Town" ALL the time.
Dazslueski@reddit (OP)

They neve4 had a shot with me. Went to Alien Ant Farm, OAR, and 311 back in like 2003. Enjoyed AAF but they only got like 20 minutes and then I just wanted to hurry through and get to 311. OAR came on and after 20 minutes said "this is our last song." I was so pumped until I watched nearly 20 minutes tick off the analog clock in the Providence Civic Center during this one song.
