Hacky Sacks

As a high school teacher of 20 years, who watches the trends ebb and flow(most recent the Nee Doh, still going) I feel like I should alert you all that the teens are bringing Hacky Sack back. During lunch, in the quad, in the hallway if the time is right… go grab a 2 dollar Hacky sack before they are 30 bucks. If I’m wrong… you have a Hacky Sack… if I’m right, you get to throw your back out showing your teenager how good you used to be.
MrsSnuffleupagus764@reddit
You already missed the window. I tried to buy some online and the only ones I could find were $10 each unless you wanted to wait for them to be shipped from China.
I work at a high school too. We came back from spring break and they are everywhere. I was dumbfounded. It happened so quick.
Pooleh@reddit
If only I still had my old Dirt Bag!
Gloomy-Incident4783@reddit
This is so funny. Last night at dinner, my HS Freshman asked me if I knew what hackey sacks were and told me it was a new trend at school.
Majestic_Egg2291@reddit
My daughter begged me for one. I was like, “you want some pogs to go with that?”
Ingonyama70@reddit
You joke but it wouldn't surprise me. Especially with how easy they would be to make now compared to the 90s.
shewholaughslasts@reddit
Ooooh with a 3d printer!
OldFashionedGary@reddit
I just saw some fast food place was giving out Pogs!
Pooleh@reddit
Dell Taco! My wife and I both got some just 2 days ago and it made our day!
meggyAnnP@reddit (OP)
Go find your pogs….
meggyAnnP@reddit (OP)
I’m telling you. Go buy one before they are “surge priced” 🤣🤣
m8k@reddit
I had this conversation with my teenager a few weeks ago and ended up going downstairs to the basement to find my old high school hacky sack, which I still have.
We have a bunch of newer ones as well, but none were as nice as the big bead (around 1/4” diameter) one that I had back in middle in high school.
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
I’m actually still pretty decent. I can still do jesters and sweeps on both sides, lots of different stalls and pickups…. I look forward to a day soon when I can jump in a circle with a bunch of kids and show them how it’s done, then spend 3-4 days recovering.
eggs_erroneous@reddit
If I tried a jester my knees would simply explode. My hacky sack days are over. Anyway, I wear Crocs when not at work. You really need some Sambas or something.
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Fat tongue skate shoes were my favorite for hackin’
post_obamacore@reddit
Osiris D3s
Espexer@reddit
I loved my Osiris, but Etnies had the most comfortable skate shoes I'd ever owned. Except for the cab 3 or cab 5, of course.
ONE1-ZERO@reddit
Etnies sandals, Ford ranger with a dirtbike in the back. Sandals to boots and back.
Alternative-Light514@reddit
I went through 3 pairs of Adio Kenny Anderson v1 w/ the gum soles. I’d rotate in some DVS Dresden’s also.
Vans era’s w/ wafflecups are prob my current fav
Espexer@reddit
I had some Adio, they were very nice. I have had many DC Court Graphics for the last eight or nine years. Thin soles, but thick tongues
ONE1-ZERO@reddit
I just busted out one of my new pair and a pair of globes. I’m out of carbon fiber DCs

Suede Puma's 🤌

Airwalks held their own, too

When you and Woody Harrelson are acting in a scene together, are you sad that somewhere there's a sack not being hackied?
Alternative-Light514@reddit
🌱😂☹️🌱
dharmaandlipgloss@reddit
I see you 👏
IAm5toned@reddit
I agree, but my back already hurts just from reading this 🤣
Hypnot0ad@reddit
I couldn't do it now, but back in the day I practiced for two weeks straight to master the around-the-world. It was my crowning achievement.
Underfyre@reddit
Wow, the baggy pants right into the hacky sack. The cycles just keep cycling.
DarksunDaFirst@reddit
Still got a a couple of mine.
Still good at it and can pull off a double jester.
Still suck at front toe kicks.
My hips hate me in the morning.
thisissomeshitman@reddit
Oh my god i saw a group of boys in a circle playing what i thought was hacky sack earlier this week! I was like no… that can’t be… clearly they are just kicking something… in a circle… they don’t know of the old ways.
ArickxEightOne@reddit
If I see a group of kids hacky sack with a phone in one hand watching tick tok instead of a cigarette I'm going to be depressed.
Elle3786@reddit
I wasn’t coordinated enough for that when I was young and I highly doubt that has changed, but I wish the kids a great time with their hacky sacks.
R1Alvin@reddit
Self serve ? Time out. Turn around. Now brace for the ass shot. 🤣
Atillion@reddit
I would jab a straw into mine and let out some of the plastic beads, then add some BB's, sew it up, then run over it with my car's front wheel a few times. Man when you could get the perfect weight and flex it was magical.
My signature move was when it was coming straight at me, I could catch on the top of my foot and in a fluid motion kick my leg behind me and get it to flip back over my head back toward the person that kicked it to me.
Now, I just pulled my back imagining doing it 😞
R1Alvin@reddit
Pendulum! That was one of my fav’s 😆
Fickle_Wrangler_7439@reddit
You all really need to do some yoga, yeesh.
I taught some teens some hacky sack moves a couple years back. One of them is still at it.
Astrazigniferi@reddit
My now-spouse made a chainmail hackey sack in college, but one of his buddies stole it and it was too much of a pain in the ass to make to ever make another one. I wonder where it is now.
jessm307@reddit
My boyfriend bought me a bunch on Amazon a year or two ago and I swear they were lighter weight than what we used to have. Is there a standard hackysack weight?
Scherzkeks@reddit
Bring back pogs!
Illystylez619@reddit
We used to throw them at people during pep rallies or in class to get their attention. 😂
Beaver_Squeezer77@reddit
Hope the new ones are as well made as the old ones. Use to run them over with a car to break them in. I still have my old one in the top drawer of my tool box😂
Peanut083@reddit
Or, hear me out, you could learn how to crochet. You can then make your own hackey sacks, and possibly even make bank by selling them to the local high school crowd.
TBF, you probably won’t make much out of selling hand made hackey sacks, but for a few dollars and a handful of hours, you can make your own and not have to pay stupid prices for them.
Now I’ve gotta go ask my 15 year old if hackey sacks are a thing at his school, and if he wants me to make him one.
RUk1dd1nGMe@reddit
This old hippy has been eyeing a hand made sand bag, and it seems I need to pull the trigger now before the prices go up!
zoobernut@reddit
My kids 14, 9, and 6 all got into them recently.
ayaruna@reddit
Are they playing beat hack? That’s where if you mess up everyone in the circle gets to hit you. Good old 1995. Good times
ammodramussavannarum@reddit
I made a shirt in high school that said “Coed Naked Hack, Don’t Kick the Wrong Sack.”
rialucia@reddit
Oh man, really?! I remember the craze picking up when I was in middle school. I never learned how to actually use one properly, but you best believe I had a cute purple hackey sack. I wish I still had it for a fidget toy.
lueur-d-espoir@reddit
It's because of the movie Project Hail Mary!! Great movie! One theater was even giving them out opening noght another was selling the movie replica. My theater had every theater greeter playing with one at the entrance to the movie.
meggyAnnP@reddit (OP)
I had no idea! I’m old 🤣. I always wonder where the trends originate. Nee doh was apparently TikTok. I figured some 45 year old was flashing some Hacky skills there🤣
lueur-d-espoir@reddit
If you haven't seen the movie you should, it's very good and has a hopeful vibe I think everyone craves right now.
VoidOmatic@reddit
Hell yea!!!
cloudydays2021@reddit
I still play it with my husband. Our neighbors think we’re nuts
jazzlike-sounds@reddit
We should hang out
meggyAnnP@reddit (OP)
I could no longer hag. Just watch.
jazzlike-sounds@reddit
That's fine. You're still invited
Mortifine@reddit
Look up Hacky Sack on Amazon and be horrified at the total failure of the algorithm.
CatsAndDogs314@reddit
My 12 year old brought one home last week.
eLishus@reddit
I saw these in a Big 5 Sporting Good store last year and grabbed a couple. Was glad to see they were making some sort of comeback. And now I'm seeing kids wear Stussy branded clothes. Just waiting for Airwalks to come back into style and I'll be cool again.
spanishpeanut@reddit
I’m already loving my return to wide leg jeans. I’m never getting rid of them again.
grandma_millennial@reddit
Should we all learn how to do those devil sticks again too?
mariposa314@reddit
Don't let it drop
lemmylemonlemming@reddit
I spent so many summer nights on the Wildwood boardwalk in a big circle with friends hackying a sack in 1996
gin_possum@reddit
Rad. Also: Parker Lewis can’t lose.
Smoky1279@reddit
The only hackey sack I've played was in California Games.
Hefty-Prize5713@reddit
One of my favorite Sega Master System games!
CokBlockinWinger@reddit
I saw them at the beach last year, so I bought one for myself and my brothers. I instantly coated it in patchouly and stomp rolled it to break it into.
My kids looked at me like I was nuts
meggyAnnP@reddit (OP)
Did you squeeze some beads out so it was slouchy? Or were you a high end sacker who wouldn’t dare go near a Hacky filled with beds?

I just found one with some old stuff! I'm ready to roll
DStew713@reddit
Haha. My 17 year old just asked me today if I had a hacky sack. He said some kids in his shop class were playing. I still have the first one I bought back in 7th grade prominently displayed on my bookshelf.

timsea99@reddit
I still have one
vietbond@reddit
Awesome. I hacked back in the 90s and recently taught my 12 year old how to play. I'm glad to see this!
Abpoe77@reddit
We were so good we could play in Navy issue boon dockers. I have photos in a shoe box for proof.
flashtastic@reddit
🤔 the trends are correct, it’s time to start stocking up on devil sticks..
Conscious_Home_4253@reddit
Yes!! My eighth grader came home last week with one.
Similar_Sale_5136@reddit
I’ve been hacking lately and my son asked me where my hacky sack was the other day. I’m 48. Son 17.
TransportationOk657@reddit
I think I still have a couple hacky sacks!
JeffTS@reddit
I still have a few hacky sacks. I should take it up again.
wiserTyou@reddit
I still have mine from all those years ago. It has the big beads which were really hard to find.
flamingknifepenis@reddit
Some years ago when I was working in a restaurant and we were having our afternoon huddle when one of the openers was carrying a stack of 1/8 pans and one slipped out of their hand. Three of us all instinctively did the little one legged hop and went in for the foot stall.
Our other coworkers looked confused until one of the guys said “Well, I guess we know who played hacky sack, huh?”
He wasn’t wrong, and frankly I was surprised by how much muscle memory was still there.
helikophis@reddit
Was just playing with my daughter the other day. “I used to be good” is such a classic hack line hah
daylight1943@reddit
and remember to get the solid fabric sand ones, the knitted bead ones are total ass
Alternative-Light514@reddit
My favorites that lasted forever were the sand-filled ones w/ the suede/nubuck sack
hi984390@reddit
But you can squeeze the right amount of beads out of the knitted ones so they are slouchy! But yeah the solid ones were better.
daylight1943@reddit
sand is better for stalls/tricks
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
The solid ones are too bouncy. Partially emptied and re-sewn knitted ass bag all the way.
morecowbell520@reddit
I was never great at them, but a buddy of mine had one and we ended up playing in the mall (1999). It was an open area at one of the lesser used entrances with very few people passing by. I was trying to kick it to the ceiling and succeeded.....but shattered the neon lighting fixture lining the ceiling. Hundreds of pieces came raining down and we ran out that door so fast. Ahhh, memories. I think I'll pass on the next hacky sack wave.
grunkle_dan78@reddit
ah yes, lunchtime battle hacky. good memories, but my lower back twinges and my knee aches just thinking about trying it now.
jtho78@reddit
I drove by a high school yesterday and saw a circle of kids playing Jianzi. I don't know if that is because of the Ne Zha film's popularity.
I posted this hacky sack tourny recently in the sub

At my last job, there were 2 of us oldsters and 3-6 (depending on the day of the week) 20-somethings.
The nature of our work often meant 5-10 minutes of “downtime” while waiting for a truck to arrive that we needed to unload. One day, I randomly found my old hacky sack from back in 199?, and decided to throw it into my bag for the day because I knew what the schedule was like that day.
Everyone ended up loving it, and it became a tradition that still persists despite me (and the other older person) having left.
