considering moving to plano

My boyfriend and I are considering moving to Plano, but neither of us are really familiar with the area. We’re in our mid 20’s and it’s my first apartment so I’m a little lost lol. My boyfriend’s only criteria for moving is just that he wants to be close to the Asian grocery stores. What do you guys think is the best part of Plano to live in? And do you guys have any recommendations for specific apartments? We’re looking for a 1 bedroom somewhere around the range of $1,600-1,800 but are flexible in our budget.

It's expensive

I know people will hate / cliche. But legacy west. Mid 20s and that good of a budget for a single bedroom idk where else you would get the value in the area.
Plus just north there are tons of Asian Indian options. And with a 15ish min drive you can get to 2 different H marts. A 99ranch. And surrounded by Asian dominated strip malls with tons of great food.
Check out chicken Barn and DaQ.
Plus legacy west will have the best night life and walkable amenities to offer in the area. I used to live in legacy east before when wesr was being built. And it was awesome. Walked to dinner most nights and made friends with the different bar managers. Got a lot of local access. Was a cool experience.
If you wanted something similar maybe downtown McKinney area or downtown plano. Both would still have close access to the Asian fare mentioned above.

I’ve heard a lot of people saying Legacy West! I would love to live there because it looks so nice but the only issue is I work in the Dallas area close to SMU and I’ve heard the commute to there might be really bad. Not sure though because I haven’t made the commute myself!
derideesq@reddit
Im not sure why people say 45 minutes or longer to SMU. Ive lived around Windhaven and the Tollway for 25 years. Ive driven downtown for much of that time, and I even attended SMU for law school during that time. (So often coming back and forth several times a day/night.)
Yes, traffic can be unpredictable. But you should expect from Legacy West to SMU area to be about 30-45 minutes during most days traffic. Off peak you will be about 20-30 minutes. (Frisco, btw, is a totally different matter which adds a chunk of time.)
Now, this may or may not work for you. The bigger question is really if the area is worth it for you. Also, dont forget the extra tolls for each day that is $5+/day. That works out to at least and extra $100 a month per car to consider.
Ironically, as I write this, I have just moved to the Turtle Creek area. It is much more expensive, but we have enjoyed it already.
Since ive lived in Dallas since the 1970's, happy to answer any other questions you might have.
Double-Value380@reddit
Legacy is great but the DNT can be brutal-looking at 45 minutes to an hour to SMU, There really isn’t a “off time” any more. Also, you will have a healthy toll bill monthly.
Significant-Host4386@reddit
Yeah there is, you just don’t have the right commute time to and from. Medical district is just south of there and shift workers make it work.
MarvVanZandt@reddit
Its a fair point but tbh anywhere you live in plano is going to be a commute to that area. Maybe look closer to downtown plano area. Still fun just not as big / busy. Plus you can take the Dart train which has a station there or right off 75 to drive there.
I commute from McKinney area (75/el dorado) to east Dallas / lake highlands area. It’s about 45-60min depending on traffic.
Another option is City Line in Richardson. Similar to legacy west just less designer stores. But much closer to your job and still positioned very close to a lot of Asian food/stores.
janejacobs1@reddit
Yes, downtown Plano—a real, interesting, friendly and safe neighborhood within your budget. Close to H Mart, 99 Ranch, and Indo-Pak markets. Plus DART access, and periodic live music and special events, like AsiaFest tomorrow
Search_Impossible@reddit
I commuted to SMU for an 8 a.m. class. I would aim to be out by 7, though I could make it if I left by about 7:20 — it was just stressful. I live in south-central Plano, and taking Coit Road down to 75 was faster than getting on it earlier.
NamQT@reddit
Yep I live right at the legacy west area and it’s really nice being so close to all the restaurants and shopping centers. Short drive to 99 ranch area in frisco and not a long drive to the one in Carrollton. The area looks nice as well.
Visible-Pay1181@reddit
99 ranch area in Frisco or between Alma and Central Exp in Plano.
CrisGa1e@reddit
At Legacy/Central, there is a Jusgo, 99 Ranch, Mitsuwa, and H Mart all within a few miles of each other.
Randy-Popcorn_Price@reddit
This is probably the best option if you want to be in Plano
lil_gingerale@reddit
I would do anything to live closer to Mitsuwa!
astranovie@reddit (OP)
yeah i looooove mitsuwa but ive always lived so far from it so im excited to move a little closer!!!
CPLCraft@reddit
If you lived by East Spring creek and K ave there’s a lot there with Mitsuwa and H Mart in either direction, ~5 mins. Also oak point park is near by.
slimdog2k@reddit
Around park and coit there’s a little Asian shop area if you want to live close to the big Asian grocery stores then legacy and Alma
CPLCraft@reddit
If op lives by East Spring creek and K ave there’s a lot there with Mitsuwa and H Mart in either direction. Also oak point is near by.
slimdog2k@reddit
Steeple Chase apartments aren’t too bad my friend lives there nice amenities from what I’ve seen and not bad interior especially for first apartment
littlemachina@reddit
Several apartments around Legacy and Alma. Idk why people are yelling you to go to Richardson and Carrollton. Within 3 miles of my home I have Mitsuwa, 99 Ranch, and H Mart here in Plano.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Because the commute to SMU is far better south of Campbell - and HMart is still an easy 15 minutes away up Plano Road. Legacy/Alma is way too far north to go to SMU Blvd everyday.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Consider Richardson over anything in Collin County. ✌🏼
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
The northern half of Richardson is in Collin County.
kevntao@reddit
Being just north of Plano into Allen, there's some great new apartments built near Watters Creek. It's just a few minutes to 99 ranch, mitsuwa, and then a bit further to hmart. https://www.alleiawc.com/floorplans/one-bedroom
MissAbundance888@reddit
Could be helpful to check Cribbi
aek82@reddit
I live by Legacy and 75 south. There's a few Asian grocery stores: Hmart, Justgo, and 99 Ranch around that intersection. There's a new apartment complex, Assembly Park near there.
Housing should be near your budget.
ArcanistKvothe24@reddit
Come live near us and the H mart off of parker/75!
Flaky_Breakfast_64@reddit
Carrollton or Richardson. That is the way.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Richardson over Carrollton, every single time. I've been in Carrollton awhile
Soonerthannow@reddit
Especially if working in the SMU area, there are good side road options if 75 is jacked.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I learned that area for awhile. It was VERY useful.
slowdancinginhell@reddit
I lived in Richardson right by UTD and I recommend the Pradera. Lived in a 1 bed 1.5 bath with a study for $1750. It’s a quiet area, thick walls, and nice apartments for the price. Also it’s right off of Bush and 75 so Plano hmart, tao market, 99 ranch, and mitsuwa are all less than or right around 10 mins away. Honestly the apartments were great but the location was the best
Soonerthannow@reddit
I would consider north Richardson or south Plano, State Farm hq area is nice, as is Alma to Custer & Plano Pkwy. Close to lots of Asian stores & restaurants, and a better commute to the SMU area than west Plano.
Alert_Score_7849@reddit
like how close to the asian grocery stores?
There are asian grocery stores on Legacy and 75 but I have no idea what the apartments are like there they seem pretty old.
astranovie@reddit (OP)
Doesn’t have to be super close but preferably within 10-15 minutes! We shop there pretty regularly
xbinary@reddit
City line is a cool
Place for a more walkable lifestyle
J_V_W@reddit
Take a look at richardson.
shinadori_@reddit
You might any to check out Carrollton. There’s a two groceries (99 Ranch and Super Hmart) as well as a lot of Asian restaurants in that area.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Stay outta Carrollton unless you like being inconvenienced by an abundance of traffic lights and school zones, And the damn train
