Day 3 of moving out. Mom's food never looked so good
Posted by New-Caterpillar-3529@reddit | shittyfoodporn | View on Reddit | 274 comments
So I finally escaped my parents house last month and got my own place. Spent literally every dollar on a couch, bed, and some basic stuff so now I'm living that gourmet pasta and beans lifestyle. The beans were 99 cents but hey, protein is protein right. Mixed it with some overcooked spaghetti and called it dinner. My mom keeps asking when I'm coming over for a real meal and honestly might take her up on that soon
Catatonick@reddit
My man that is not spaghetti, it also looks insanely bland.
FuzzyBongos@reddit
Spaghetti is a noodle lol. What you have here is (i think) rigatoni and beans

Brother a can of meat sauce is like a dollar please
pocketchange2247@reddit
Cook pasta, drain pasta, throw the meat sauce in the same pan the pasta was in, heat it for a minute or two, throw pasta back in, stir, and eat.
You only get the one pot and one spoon dirty (plus whatever plate and fork you eat with), and it takes like two minutes more, but looks and tastes so much better.

And just get some dried herbs and spices to jazz it up
Luci-Noir@reddit
You don’t really even have to do that. The one I got a few days ago already had garlic and herbs in it. If it needed anything it would be meat. Beef is expensive so maybe ground turkey. The sauce I bought was as good as the expensive stuff I used to get. It’s crazy how much cheaper generics are.

This screams as someone who complained and threatened to move out of their parents house but had no idea how to cook or do laundry or anything because their parents did it for them
meatinmybriefs@reddit
I realize you may not feel malice, but I do want to point out that that's not necessarily a failure on someone's part. You don't know what your parents didn't teach you. Breaking free was already a huge step, learning the rest should be much easier for OP.
Alternative_Swan_497@reddit
This. Everyone learns a lot the first time they move out on their own.
RecalcitrantHuman@reddit
And Reddit is here to teach them. Just don’t tell us how to go about it.
JewingIt@reddit
Wrong person
g0blinzez@reddit
Yeah man, it's almost like some parents are controlling, or neglectful, and are either lazy pieces of shit who can't even be bothered to teach their kids to bathe and cook for themselves, or who purposefully neglect to teach those things so their kids stay dependent on them for longer. It's a real documented phenomenon in abusive family structures. You don't know anyone's situation, so stop assuming you do. 9 times out of 10, it's the parent's fault because they hold literally all of the power in the relationship.
Jopkins@reddit
Next up on "things some random Redditor invented", we have a woman who's fallen out with her boyfriend - /u/g0blinzez speculates it's all down to domestic violence! Stay tuned.
NinjakerX@reddit
No, they are right. You're just being a dick, just like the person they were replying to, who essentially implied the OP was babied by their parents and not only this is somehow OP's fault, they are also at fault to move out in the first place. Hence the mentions of "complained" and "threatened". He's basically saying the person was throwing tantrums.
g0blinzez@reddit
Careful, these people lack reading comprehensions. Or they're aliens who have no idea how human parent-child relationships work.
g0blinzez@reddit
lol Kungpowpenis
IsThisTheFly@reddit
Wtf is wrong with you
JewingIt@reddit
Do you have any sort of source to back up your claim of "9 times out of 10, it's the parents fault"?
AccomplishedBug8077@reddit
Literally where else would the fault lie? Parents make children, and it's not like anyone else in society is looking out for the kids lol
JewingIt@reddit
Did I ever claim that it was false?
g0blinzez@reddit
Yes. Yes you did immediately after you commented this lmfao
g0blinzez@reddit
Uh, idk, maybe the fact that children are half their size, have no knowledge of the world, are learning everything for the first time, have no financial independence or means of gaining that independence, and are reliant on their parents for literally everything? Kinda hard to abuse someone who has that much power over you. Basic common sense really.
JewingIt@reddit
So, nothing to actually back up your claim but an anecdotal refetence.
g0blinzez@reddit
Anyway, I'm going to tell you what I told the other asshole in my replies: Kungpowpenis. Go ragebait someone else. Clearly you were released from your government alien clone program a bit too early if you don't understand how humans raise their young.

Rice is cheaper than pasta …
Rider434@reddit
And mixes way better with beans
Boogy-Fever@reddit
Proper pasta with beans is great. This is not that. All the other flavors like an onion and some canned tomatoes if you want, are also cheap. You can add some garlic and some herbs but dont need to. You can even use cheap as hell store brand beans. Expensive high quality beans exist but for store brand I find pinto to be the best choice for pasta
uncleozzy@reddit
Nah, the best beans for pasta are cannellini, at least if you're not doing red sauce. They get so creamy.
Chickpeas also good with certain shapes if you cook them right.
Pinto beans? Hell naw.
Boogy-Fever@reddit
Im talking about cheapest store brand beans. I've tried a few types of cheap white ones and they all sucked for fagioli. And pintos get plenty creamy. Anyway I prefer this type of pasta with beans rather than the soupy bean sauce https://pastagrammar.com/blogs/recipes/pasta-e-fagioli-authentic-italian-pasta-beans-recipe?_pos=3&_sid=ee02bd228&_ss=r
uncleozzy@reddit
It would never occur to me to buy anything but cheap store brand beans. They’re beans!
Boogy-Fever@reddit
From what I hear a good brand makes a big difference but im not spending extra on them at this point to find out
AccomplishedBug8077@reddit
Lentils in red sauce with smaller pasta like macaroni makes a nice nutrient slop. Probably more nutritious with rice, though. Which you can also put red sauce on!
wyldnfried@reddit
That's a myth: https://www.ecowatch.com/hey-vegetarians-and-vegans-its-time-to-debunk-the-protein-combining-my-1891129518.html
_phaidyme@reddit
Did you read the article you posted? It says you don’t need to combine them in the same meal for it to work because your body stores the amino acids and can wait for the complimentary ones to come along in a different meal.
It does NOT say that combining doesn’t work.
Trialzero@reddit

Anxious_Lab_2049@reddit
You do need grains with lentils, man. It’s not a myth, it’s a fact.
Beyond that, rice also keeps them from causing distress from a pure fiber bomb.
IHaveAutismDude@reddit
It's something to worry about if it's your only source of protein, because you will need both in your diet to get all the amino acids you need. You just don't need to eat both at once, as your source states.
Top-Library9128@reddit
Rice and beans is a way more common and enjoyable pairing than rice and pasta dude
Saintly-Mendicant-69@reddit
Yeah dawg spend a few bucks next time on the cheapest of dried herbs/spices and some time learning a little technique, rice and beans becomes amazing.
Also get an instant pot at good will/thrift store for the beans. Invest in a 30~ rice cooker
ampersand64@reddit
Pasta is $1/lb, with ~3.8 grams of protein per 100 calories. Takes 10 minutes to heat water, 8 minutes to cook. Fortified with essential vitamins. Pasta also has some carotenoids, so if you aren't eating many fruits or veggies, it can help you get a little vitamin D.
Rice is 50¢/lb, with ~2 grams of protein per 100 calories. Takes 30 minutes to cook. Sometimes sold fortified, but washing takes away those nutrients.
AP flour is 40-50¢/lb, with ~3.6 grams of protein per 100 calories. Takes hours to turn into bread. Usually sold enriched.
DarkIcedWolf@reddit
Depends on where you buy it, it’s about the same price here. Though rice usually lasts longer and white rice is usually much cheaper.
Cosmonaut_Cockswing@reddit

Bro wtf you doing. Get some goddamn pasta sauce up in that B. Even the cheap stuff will be fine. Throw some butter in the sauce after it heats up and it makes any sauce better. Little parm cheese too never hurts.
You can mash or blend up those beans and throw em in the sauce for extra protein and you can’t really tell that there’s beans in there.
But, it’s a bit of an investment if you don’t have a food processor. Those things can be over $100 for a really good one but I’m sure you can find them somewhere for a lot cheaper, maybe FB marketplace.
PapiPorkchop@reddit
Never sleep on the giant bag of white rice, it is such a money saver, make something that could be eaten with it like gumbo or teriyaki chicken, basically anything that you can slather some sauce on it and it tastes great, feeling those savings roll in is just awesome
PapiPorkchop@reddit
The two other things that I do that save a ton of money with food are using my own sourdough starter, if you get good at it you can make great bread/pancakes/biscuts for basically nothing, and basically any green leafy food like a bok choy lettuce or green onions can be grown in a cup with super cheap hydroponic plant food that you can get on line
These things might sound ridiculous but they add up super quick, good luck soldier
PapiPorkchop@reddit
Also canned spaghetti sauce is like a dollar, couple that with a pound of spaghetti being a dollar and you have two to three meals for two bucks.
This last one might not be something a lot of people are into but you can also grow mushrooms in like a 5 gallon bucket with some wood chips, the amount that they yield for the cost and effort being put into them really shows you how much we are being overcharged for them
mistym0rning@reddit

Some healpful tips from someone who left home as a minor with no money . Quaker churches frequntly do potlucks where anybody can join. Theurs a lot of stigma around food banks but THEY ARE THEIR FOR A REASON use them! Especially when you are first starting out it can be a game changer. Also spices make life a little happier, but it is quite pricey at first too get them (I know lol) so have a super dirt cheap week and buy a bunch of spices that week. bigbeefybun@reddit
Get rice to go with the beans instead
Fledermausmann69420@reddit
You're using the wrong pasta here. When making pasta with beans (or any kind of legumes) you need small pasta (with the size of your thumb nail). Also when making the beans, first saute some onion and garlic, then add the beans from the can (if you don't like the broth they come with, strain em and add just enough water to cover them). Add some tomato (peel it and cut it into small cubes) and if you want you can add something spicy or maybe pepper. Wait until the water reduces until it gets nice and saucy. Boil your small pasta with a little bit of salt, strain it and add your beans to your pasta and in the end if you want, and have, you can add fresh parsley. That's how you make pasta with beans.

Cook with spices, good general ones are Morton nature seasons, Lawrys. Salt, pepper, MSG, cayenne, and expands from there. Pick up a small rice cooker, easy to use, best results. There's a tier list of pasta sauces, with cheap ones near the top of there. Onion beef soup mix. Lots of great, cheap options avail. Good luck 👍

Hey bro, you can saute some onion and garlic. Then cook the pasta with just enough water to keep it covered in the pan with the beans. Let it cook to where the liquid reduces and youll have a more nicely combined meal.
From there you can add other stuff. Greens, tomato paste, seasonings. You got this.

WildCard0102@reddit
An onion, a can of green chilies (optional), some minced garlic cloves (optional), a box of jambalaya rice, a can of black beans drained and rinsed. All those ingredients should cost about $6-8 altogether. ($4-6 if skipping chilies and garlic)
Sautee the onions in oil or fat, add the chilies and garlic if using. Add the rice and beans and cook the rice by the box instructions.
Cheap, nutritious, flavorful, fills you up, and makes a ton of leftovers.

Just some butter and Parmesan on pasta goes a long way. Try your local food pantry. Don't skip the fiber.
If you get a local library card, a lot of them allow you yo borrow ebooks and audiobooks through an app. I use Libby. Get some books on budget grocery buying and meals. Frozen fruit and veg is actually quite good, especially if flash frozen, because the nutrients are locked in at their peak.
Use craigslist free listings and Facebook marketplace. People also make local FB pages for free stuff or garage sales. Sometimes your area might even have a "tool library" if you find you need something like that.

Buy a bag of dried beans. I like black. Pinto. Or red. Put in a large pot or bowl over night. Drain the water. Rinse the beans. Put in a crock pot with some olive oil. Salt. Ideally throw in some cumin. Some chili powder. Some is like 1 teaspoon. Cook on high for 8 hours. When you have the leftover beans. Put them in a pan. Add more chili powder. Smash them up and heat them up. Refried beans (white people mexican food).
Buy a whole chicken. Put any spice on it. They have lots of pre-don spices like Greek seasonings or seasoned salt etc. Italian seasoning. Put it in an oven at 350 until it reaches 350. It is much cheaper to get a $5 bird from Sam’s or Costco that is already cooked.
Get leftover spaghetti. Crack 5 or 6 eggs and beat them like you are doing scrambled eggs. Heat up some noodles in microwave. Put warm noodles in pan. Pour beaten eggs on top. Bake in oven or stove top and flip it half way. Yo can add cheese and other stuff.

Keep improving your technique. This meal looks like what I used to make when I had no idea what I was doing. Saw someone else suggest "meat sauce." Heckin butter by itself goes well with pasta, penne and beans seems like a strange choice. Eat the beans as a side instead of tossing them in it.
Blah blah blah blah blah... youtube. Right now soilder.

You can get cheap, quality furnishings at any weekend estate sales in the greater village metropolitan area. We already have enough furniture to outfit the next six generations without ever visiting a store.
For food, just learn how to brown some onions in a pan. You can build from there as the basis of adding flavor to pretty much any dish, anywhere in the world. Onions grown in nearly all climates, and supply yields pretty much year round.

Dry Small Red Beans. 1lbs. $1.80 or less. Soak overnight.
Rice. $4.98 for 5lbs.
$4.00 on a red onion, red bell pepper, and a couple stalks of celery.
$3.00 for a smoked ham hocks
$3.00 for some Cajun seasoning
$16.00 or so all in will make you a big-ass dinner of Cajun Red Beans and rice. Which would be way better than that. And it’d be enough red beans and rice to feed you all week and freeze for next week.
Maybe my numbers are slightly off. Walk in to a discount grocer with $20 and you can get everything you need for red beans and rice.
Ecstatic_Race3599@reddit
The other stuff you bought were not necessary. Priorities are the most important thing learn; don’t worry everyone struggles to some degree. Food, water and bills paid are always number 1-3 on my list. A couch has never been needed unless it is also your bed. I slept on a wood floor for many months when I first moved out. (Back before Amazon had ~$300 memory foam mattresses). I’ve also ate beans and pasta on purpose many times- add some herbs and olive oil & a sprinkle of salt for increased happiness. A quick cheap healthy pasta sauce is a spoonful or so to preference of roasted red pepper hummus. The water still on the pasta after draining loosens it up. Salt the water you cook pasta in, and reserve some of the water if you want to loosen the sauce further. My favorite cheap filling breakfast is an egg blended with a banana (can be mashed with a fork), I add a little flour or pancake mix to thicken it up and throw it in the waffle maker. So much more filling than an egg or banana on its own.

You could make a ghetto puttanesca by adding tins of tomato sauce, olives of choice (kalamata for me), some dried mix herbs, and a couple of anchovies cooked down for a bit of that umami saltiness.
I lived off this before I started earning adult money.

Take the whole can of beans and mash the hell outta them or puree if you can score a blender from the thrift store. Throw some water or chicken broth in them while they mash/puree to thin it out some, add seasoning to your taste and BOOM, you have a bean sauce for your pasta.
digilici@reddit
consider: rice is less expensive than pasta and will probably taste better with beans

Yo OP, idk if you have an ALDI near you but they have terrific prices - just get used to shopping without specific brands in mind.
look for the rice packets that you can microwave/boil in a pot. Usually can come flavored if you don’t know how to mix herbs/ spices. Add that to beans with maybe a can of tuna/ chicken breast and a little mayo and you’ve got a filling meal that will be at least alright. Be careful with canned meat/ tuna cause it’s high in sodium and tuna can add up with the mercury.
learn to cook with spices, add salt to stuff, add pepper. Use fats, oils, acid to balance and sugar/ heat to add diversity. Think of a good guac (if you like it) fatty avocado, bright tomato and onion, cilantro for depth, and lime juice is the acid that brings it together. Salt enhances the flavors.
learn to cook rice. Bagged, uncooked rice (and beans) are cheaper. Learn to either cook it in a pot or get a rice cooker.
-potatoes are cheap and fill you up. Chop them big, Toss them in boiling, salted water, when they start getting soft strain the water and toss them so they get fluffy outside kinda then toss them into the oven on a cookie sheet or even a pan (oven safe) with some oil on high heat. Roast them, toss them in the oil a couple times and back into the oven. Add rosemary, thyme, oregano, literally doesn’t matter they’ll be good. Pull them out and salt them when hot. This is one single, easy, delicious recipe. There’s so so so many potato recipes. They’re all easy cause potatoes don’t need much except fat and salt.
This is all cause idk what kinda relationship you got with your mom. Do you wanna go back home just cause you want good food? Will they hold it over you? Berate you? Learn to cook! It’ll help literally the rest of your life

I could be wrong but that looks so unseasoned. If you invest in some salt, pepper, and dried herbs (literally any of them) it will allow you to make almost any food taste better for almost no added cost. Or steal seasoning packets from stores.

Pasta Napoletana is very easy and cheap to make. Still tastes good of you skip some of the ingredients.
ratafia4444@reddit
Beans are actually awesome. Buy onions if you eat them, cheap, keep long and add a lot of flavour. For sauce, depending on the prices and your location, there's a lot of canned stuff. Tomato paste + some water + a bit bean juice from the can/water you cooked pasta in works fine. Hell, even ketchup might work in a pinch. Buy spices. Frozen and canned veggies are your best friends, cheaper, already cleaned and portions are more manageable. Plus you can just chuck what you didn't use in the fridge/freezer for later.

Remember that only if your daily protein needs are filled, your body truely has no hunger left. So if you just eat fatty and sweet, you might get a full feeling, but you arent satisfied. Thus, always look for enought proteins. I am shure you will get it right. There are lot of cooking videos that are explaning good meals with very low costs, caned beans are just the best in this case because they are cheap, easy to store and full of protiens and other importand nutriens. Have in mind, that a lot of the nutriens are dissolved in the water of the beans, so dont chug it away and use it in sauces for example. Hope that helpet a little. Just moved out myself like 8 month ago
celem83@reddit
