And so it begins. I tripped over my dog and broke my hip. Tomorrow is my 59th birthday and I’m in the hospital.

Jesus, and here's me about to buy an electronic mountain bike so I can keep up with my 9-year old daughter...
And the last time I rode motocross about 20 years ago I broke my collarbone. Maybe I need to rethink my life decisions.

Happy birthday! Sorry you’re spending it in the hospital.

I just turned 59. I have pneumonia. I feel your pain.
Spiritual_Crow409@reddit
I turn 59 in June. Had pneumonia last month. It’s no joke. Feel better soon.

Frack! I broke a bone for the first time last year, definitely shook me about getting fragile. Sorry bro!
Moody_Immortal_1@reddit
No, look at it this way, you got that broken hip outta the way at a time where you are still (hopefully) mobile and will heal well. It was secretly a different kind of birthday present. Sorry you're in hospital though!
But you are going to head towards your 60's in great shape, as you will have had some physio, etc.
Call me Pollyanna. LOL

Happy Birthday. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

I'm sorry that happened to you, but I certainly feel better about myself now. Get well soon and Happy Birthday!

I’m so sorry! Happy birthday anyway. I’ll be 60 in June. Last year I had kidney stone surgery 14 times.

I think it’s more breaking of the hip and more importantly, our potential fragility over breaking a hip at this age.

Ugh. I just turned 51 and apparently I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands now.
I'm pissed. I USE my hands, all the time.

That is awful and thankfully as I am in the UK if that happened to me I would not have to declare bankruptcy as well.

I turned 60 on Tuesday. On Easter Sunday I slipped in a puddle of dog pee (it's just as well she's so cute!) and twisted my knee. I thought about calling out for the neighbours but I couldn't handle the idea of them finding me on the floor in my pyjamas laying in a puddle of dog piss. This getting older schtick isn't for sissies.
Charming-Insurance@reddit
John Mellancamp wrote an album during his the end of his last marriage circa 2008. So, he was staring down 60. I think it’s all acoustic and a lot of it is about aging. It’s my favorite full album of his, highly recommend.
Anywho, your comment reminded me of the song “Don’t Need This Body,” and the line, “This getting older, ain’t for cowards. This getting older is a lot to go through.” I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years since I first heard that album. I am now closing in on the age he was when he wrote it.

I tripped over my dog in 1982 and knocked my two front teeth out - roots included. I've worn a partial plate ever since.
On the plus side, it did make me the most popular kid in class for a while, as I was constantly asked by other pupils to take my teeth out, keep my jaw clenched and poke my tongue through the gap. Oh, and to say words beginning with "S" without my plate.
flamingweaselonastik@reddit
I did the same thing to my stepdaughter and son when they had lost their top front teeth, only try saying V and F instead. "Fluffy feathers from a velvet van."

Comprehensive_End751@reddit
My bones are good but my ligaments and muscles aren’t (collagen related). Was leaning over to pick up a few pieces of washing off the bed and tore my calf muscle. My grandmother dropped dead hanging out the washing when she was 31. Housework can kill you!
CraftAvoidance@reddit
Connective tissue disorder? I have Ehlers-Danlos. Good enough reason for me to stop doing chores from now on!
Comprehensive_End751@reddit
Yeah, me too. POTS and the other stuff that goes with it as well. I believe my grandmother had the vascular type and my mother had the skin and was only 4 foot 8. All my kids have hEDS
CraftAvoidance@reddit
My kids and I do too. All of the crap. Luckily we just have hEDS, not vascular, but it still sucks pretty bad lol. And POTS is the freaking worst. Along with Hashimoto’s, MALS, etc. Ugh. I’m sorry you’re dealing with all that too.
Comprehensive_End751@reddit
Yeah it sucks. Just found out about MCAS recently and trying to help that. I’ve got Hashimotos as well. I’ve got all the digestive ones like diverticulosis, IBS, reflux etc. Trying my best to live my best life. Now at least I’ve gotten answers to what the heck is wrong with me and it all falls under the same umbrella so that’s something at least. Carnivore, red light therapy, electrolytes, supplements, appropriate exercise and more just so I can live a good life
CraftAvoidance@reddit
Ugh, MCAS is about ruining my life! It’s awful! My daughter has it too. So far carnivore is the thing that makes us feel the best and react the least, but it’s SO HARD to do. Every few weeks I do a carnivore reset to bring my histamine levels down. I wish I could keep it up all the time, but it’s just too hard.
Comprehensive_End751@reddit
I’ve been carnivore this time for over 2 years. Went to Thailand a couple of months ago and could only do carnivorish as so much of the meat has soy sauce and I can’t eat gluten. It’s harder when you cycle in and out of it. Oxalate dumping made me quit twice before. Twenty plus times of going #2 that felt like shitting glass shards stopped me before. I had to wean off oxalates gradually so I could function. This time it’s the histamine dumping that’s causing that but I’ve finally slowed down. It’s all fun and games till you can’t stand up, move around or walk or you have to make a mad dash to the toilet.
VermicelliEfficient9@reddit
So your grandma was dead before she hit the ground, or after?
Comprehensive_End751@reddit
Wasn’t there. The family story was that she dropped dead hanging out the washing
Grouchy_Vet@reddit
I’m so sorry that happened. Praying you heal quickly. I’m going to need a hip replacement in the future and I’m dreading it. One of my good friends broke a hip last year and needed a replacement. She said “Do it! It’s not as bad as you think”
So, I hope you get well quickly.
Happy birthday

IvyGold@reddit
Do it now. I did it almost a year ago. It's bad but not that bad. I'm now walking almost normally for the first time in maybe five years.
I'm not kidding: do it now!
GingerA0712@reddit
Oh no! Be well. HBD
jfarrelly01@reddit
So it begins??? It doesn’t have to! You do the PT exercises and increase your strength. That hip will last you another decade. Now, you start exercises to increase your strength. Start low and slow. Do not let this get you down.
Kickingandscreaming@reddit
Happy Birthday! Hope they're giving you good pain meds. Get well soon!

55 and broke my left hip a month before my birthday. I broke the same femur about 5 years ago and in the meantime fell on the knee of that leg and now it doesn't work right. After all this, my left leg is now about an inch shorter than my right.
Good luck with rehab--be diligent about it, it gets easier but takes some time. I'm going into month 3 and finally close to finished with rehab. You may get through it in as little as 2 months. Eat well, sleep well, exercise right. You'll be okay. Reddit is here for you in the meantime 😁
RetroBassed@reddit
I fell 20+ years ago, went down hard on my left hip on tile floor. Now I'm 56 and have had both hips replaced due to osteoarthritis. And that old fall on my hip jacked everything on that side upward, so like you... I have one leg longer than the other. Such fun stuff!

Significant_Hope_757@reddit
I went into the hospital for hernia surgery and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to time my shoes so I bought those big fluffy cloud sandals, and 10 feet before the surgical bed that morning I went down and broke my knee in the hospital! I was no longer having hernia surgery. They had to go tell the Doctor Who was scrubbing up at the time that she was no longer having surgery and I had knee surgery and didn’t go home for a month and a half later after rehab.

My dog pulled my horizontal at 50 and I broke 3 ribs, lol. The following year, I broke my ankle and had 3 surgeries on it (plate, screws and a massive golden staph infection)
I had the same thought about ‘and so it begins’. Turned out I had full blown osteoporosis and am taking steps to make my bones stronger.
Sorry you’re spending your birthday in hospital and wishing you a speedy recovery. I’m the same age as you and as far as I’m concerned, it was just a blip in my mobility

My cousin broke his femur playing baseball. I told him that’s a much cooler story than tripping over the dog. I’m going to be 52 in a couple of weeks. I took a med that made headrush and dizzy so bad that I fell and landed right on my spine.i had ruptured my disk mid back. I was on bed rest for two days then I pushed myself to heal. I’m just now starting to bend down without hurting.

Invincible till we are not.
I broke my femur last July. Got puns screws basically the whole hardware section put in.
It didn't take. Now I'm scheduled for a whole hip replacement.
My original Dr said i was limping because of pelvic drop. I asked if it was because my leg was an inch shorter now. He gave me a referral.
Brite side. I got switched from kitty litter to dishwasher chores.

My brother Gen X 51 RIP liver failure this week. Listen, the last 6 years in particular have been very hard on a lot of people.
Reminder that broke bones burn massive calories to heal. Everyone I know who broke a bone loses some muscle mass. Take care!
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
I'm sorry for you loss. I hope you and your family are trying to recover and rebuild your lives now as you can.
I lost a friend a 2 years ago who was 22 from a drunk driver. Hit him head on, immediately killed my friend, but the individual causing the accident lived with minor injuries. To say life isn't fair can be redundant... And as my mother tried to tell me life isn't always going to be fair ..
I went in a cute liver failure last year and almost died.
Seems like the smart ass Drs giving me meds for two shattered lumbar disc thought 4000 mg of acetaminophen 3x a day was better than bad ol opioids for pain .
As a result within 6 months I was in Intensive Care on IV meds to try to get my liver ast or alt down from the 9000's when normal is 1-99. It took a week but now I can never take Tylenol, acetaminophen, and any other drugs that have a warning about causing issues with liver functions.

Okay but for real my favorite thing about pt rehab post-hip replacement was not having to give a single thought to what to cook for any meal for weeks.
That’s not a joke. It was a treat that I got a much-needed break, having someone else not just cook for me but it’s not the cooking I mind. It’s the omg what to have for the next meal decision that I was sick of.
So instead, while I was in the hospital recovering, all I had to do was pick which of the two choices I wanted from the hospital menu.
I used the hospital time to get deep into a new-to-me tv too, spoiling myself with watching Below Deck for the first time. I’m now obsessed.
PT does absolute wonders. I was told I might not ever walk again; I walk at least 4-5 miles a day these days.

I go for fitness walks every day. Been doing that for a decade or so.
A few weeks ago I was on one, headphones on just walking down the sidewalk. Right foot stepped on the side of the sidewalk and there was a huge gap between the sidewalk and the grass. Completely rolled my ankle.
Other foot was on the way up, so no support. Went down like a bullet into the ground. Left hand and knee broke my fall on the sidewalk and right elbow into the ground.
Couldn’t walk when I got home. But, two days later I was out walking again. No broken bones. I credit that to regular fitness. At 57, felt good about that.
Anyone that says walking is completely safe, think again. Next time you are walking down the sidewalk, have a look at the edge. You will see the death traps.

wishing you a smooth, speedy comeback. Keep us posted 🥂

How painful was it? What does your recovery look like?
Familiar_Rip_8871@reddit (OP)
I fell on my hip that was already wrecked by cancer so it’s just more of the same pain. I know others say it’s excruciating

Please don't just lay in bed do the treatments and physical therapy you do not need a blood clot! happened to my mom she survived but did require a lengthy stay in the icu. Positive thoughts your way.
imrickjamesbioch@reddit
Huh, did your mother refuse surgery? My dr was pretty specific that if I didn’t get my surgery on my broken hip, I would get blood clots and 80% chance of dying. On top of that, if I did survive I wouldn’t walk straight or correctly without the surgery.
Anyway, your mother is now fine!
BooksCheeseandBees@reddit
No she fell and broke a wrist had surgery.. and as angry as I am to say this refused to get out of bed! legit laid in her hospital bed after wrist surgery got a blood clot and almost died. I just always try to warn people of blood clots after falling no matter what was injured.
Familiar_Rip_8871@reddit (OP)
I’ve been walking around and have PT. I’m hiking the Alps in a few months so I won’t be laying around!

Sorry to hear that. What kind of dog? The reason I intentionally choose big dogs 70+ lbs is because I don't see small dogs, and I have more than once accidentally tripped and stepped on them.

I pushed a wheelbarrow of fieldstone up a hill. Dunno wtf i did yet, I've had an xray and mri and go see the orthopedic specialist again tomorrow. Could be a snowboarding fracture or a sprained Achilles heel. I've pulled a ligament falling off a skateboard, and a different one galling off a bicycle. I broke a finger when a bag of laundry slipped.
You never know what's going to happen until it does!

It will be ok- I just had open heart surgery to correct 3 issues, i’m 66 and the medical consensus was; do it now while you are young, can tolerate surgery & will heal quickly- Im a month into recovery & healing ahead of schedule- your age will help you rehab better & quicker than an older person- if it had to happen, its better now than when you’re 80- you will be ok
TurtleToast2@reddit

Turned 60 in Sept. since then, I’ve been scoped for blood in my urine, been in a boot/crutches for four months dealing with foot inflammation (resolved), and had shoulder surgery 6 weeks ago, which I’m still nowhere near recovering from. I liken it to a car that turned 100k, and all of a sudden, EVERY system is breaking down at once.

Happy Birthday🎂 At least you won’t forget this one!
imrickjamesbioch@reddit
Oh shit… Im so sorry to hear that OP. You’re on your phone so hopefully it’s not too bad.
I broke my hip last July by my wife dog getting out 😡 and when I grabbed him, he completely swept my legs from underneath me. I landed right on my hip and luckily (I guess) I broke the part of the hip above my hip socket. Which is a big deal cuz if you crack your hip socket, you need a full hip replacement vs this big ass rod that the doc hammer into my leg.
Anyway, I didn’t have a choice but to get immediate surgery either way and hopefully OP your injury is not as severe as mine.
Wish you a speedy recovery 🙏 and look on the bright side, you’ll have ton of time to relax and plan an EPIC 60th bday bash or a once in a lifetime trip to somewhere! Happy 59th Birthday!!!

In all fairness, you could have done this 10 years ago. When my old black lab was a youngster, he jumped up on the bed, we wrestled a bit and then he, as the doctor wrote it "high fived me in the eye". The issue was I had lasik surgery 20 year prior and the sratchy paw moved the cornea flap around. The old guy is 14 now but can still beat me to a piece of cheese on the floor.
All the best on the recovery. I'm definitely sure that takes longer these days.
