Where to live as someone who is trying to be a teacher?

Need some recommendations on cities that are in good areas with good school districts. My partner is going to be a teacher and we’re worried about long commutes and tolls. Our budget is around 1400-1500 for a 1br. Our last rental a few hours away from DFW had a roach problem so that is the #1 deal breaker for us.

Look into Mansfield ISD. You could live there, Arlington, Kennedale or Grand Prairie.

The faster he gets into the certification process the better. Even if you can technically hire someone in a program, it is a huge headache if they don't finish or can't pass the tests. You can't have someone on an alt cert track forever. I would always prefer the certified candidate over the person in a program, especially if they haven't passed the certification tests (which you can't take until you finish the course work).

A bunch of districts have school board elections this Saturday. Ask again Sunday.

As another suggested, target your district first. Up and coming communities like Prosper, Celina will have a demand, but other established districts, although facing decreasing enrollment are still needing quality teachers. Plano is starting at $64k for certified teachers ... $66k with a Master's. I work closely with teachers as a mortgage banker and PTA. More teachers than I realized commute about 45 min to work, so you don't want to do the same. Prosper and Celina will allow your partner to grow with the district, and it's still affordable ... for now.

Pay attention to whether the smaller suburban districts are expanding or shrinking. Do some research. (I’m sure she is). But there are distilled Plano that are closing schools, and there are districts like Royce City, that are still building new schools. Look to the suburbs where there is still active new home construction going on. Those are the districts that are always looking for new teachers.

I would suggest you pick a district before picking an apartment. Your budget should get you a decent apartment in just about any city. It won't be new or one of the luxury ones.
