NASA chief Jared Isaacman says he's fighting for Pluto: 'I am very much in the camp of 'make Pluto a planet again'

Jared Isaacman is a fellow Xennial. He remembers the old days of 9 planets. Prior to becoming NASA Administrator he also proposed a self-funded mission to service and boost the Hubble Space Telescope because he grew up on a steady diet of Hubble porn like we all did
Temporary-Job-9049@reddit
Good thing he's focused on the important things, like labels, instead of the massive budget cuts and gutting of research.

Saw this post and immediately went "Pluto's a fuckin' planet, bitch!" đ¤Ł

Pluto is not a planet. There are a lot of things that we could roll back to fit our nostalgia or preferences, but scientific classifications that fit the best of our consistently updated knowledge should not be one of them.
Moof_the_cyclist@reddit
I love that one criteria used to discredit Pluto as a planet, clearing its own orbit (thanks a lot Neptune!), doesnât disqualify other planets (i.e. stupid Neptune!).
Epicardiectomist@reddit
it's so fucking annoying. Pluto is smaller than some moons. It's where it belongs.
OdinsGhost@reddit
Itâs smaller than some rooms and hasnât cleared its orbit. Itâs not even the largest object in the Kuiper belt. Iâve never understood why people were obsessed with keeping it as a planet despite the fact that if it is included, there are a ton more bodies in the solar system, that would also need to be added to the list. You canât have Pluto be a special exception just because.
Officialfish_hole@reddit
Yeah, it's literally smaller than our moon.
I_miss_your_mommy@reddit
You arenât supposed to call them dwarves anymore. Little planet is preferred.
Don_T_Blink@reddit
Planet of small size.
peanutbutter2178@reddit
Nah Pluto is out there tell you can have my axe
zerocoolforschool@reddit
HeyâŚ.. has anyone thought to ask Pluto what it wants?!?!
OdinsGhost@reddit
Does he not understand that NASA has absolutely no say in the international designation of planetary bodies?
iwasnotarobot@reddit
Such a weird fight.
Pluto is a dog.
MeepleMaster@reddit
But what does that make goofy?
Far-Pie-6226@reddit
Jesus. I don't want to even joke about Pluto being a planet anymore. These people ruin everything they touch. Imagine being in charge of the greatest space agency in the history of the human race and wanted to make a scientific change because of nostalgia. Â
gman1647@reddit
I'd just like to know if I need to go back and redo my 5th grade planet project or not.
_pray4snow_@reddit
More idiocy from the biggest idiots ever elected and appointed.Â
Melancholy_Rainbows@reddit
Why is this such a big deal for people? Is it just knee jerk hatred of change?
The fact that there are potentially dozens of dwarf planets, of which Pluto was the first we discovered, is incredibly cool. Itâs okay for our understanding of the universe to change, grow, and adapt.
Major_Swordfish508@reddit
No, it is not ok for anything to change since I went to elementary school. The universe must be static and nobody can learn anything because that makes me feel smart. /s

Pluto is a planet⌠with an adjective.

Even if somehow they reclassify Pluto as a planet, there will still only be eight planets after I destroy Uranus.

Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
I'm usually super against gate-keeping... but maybe we can expel this one just one principle?
BlamRob@reddit
What of Eris? Isnât it larger than Pluto?
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
As I gather it's more massive with a lower volume. So... yes, but also no.
alvinofdiaspar@reddit
I am not sure why people are so hung up on a label. Isnât it far more important to discover an entirely new class of objects?
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Well pronouns are labels too, and look at how they go off about those. đ
mousicle@reddit
Sure make Pluto a planet that jsut means we'll have what 14+ planets?
Dobako@reddit
Theres also like 6 or 7 moons bigger than Pluto, and a couple are bigger than mercury. Not that thats really pertinent, but "just because we learned about it in school 30+ years ago" isnt the flex some treat it as.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Frankly a science worker who obsesses over outdated concepts sounds like a terrible scientist. Don't get me wrong, the definition of planet is idiotic, but it's also irrelevant to any actual science.
jeophys152@reddit
The earthâs moon is so large that its primary gravitational influence is the sun, rather than the earth. Itâs the only natural satellite where that is the case. The earth and moon are really more like a binary planet system
goodlittlesquid@reddit
Surely not compared to Pluto-Charon, which actually has its barycenter above Plutoâs surface
jeophys152@reddit
Pluto is not a planet đ
absentlyric@reddit
Well, in our moon's case, it was part of the planet that just got blown off ages ago.
UnderH20giraffe@reddit
Thatâs a good way to think about it. I was just thinking the other day about how absolutely gargantuan the moon is compared to the Earth, vs. most other moons. It big.
Entropy907@reddit
Itâs a slippery slope.
reillan@reddit
The new list is: Mercury Venus Earth Mars Ceres Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto Haumea Makemake Eris.

This is a stupid argument. People are so fucking nostalgic about their very eccentric mother and her apparently to-die-for pickles that theyâre making stupid arguments.

If he wants things to be like they were when we were growing up hebcan start by fighting to return funding for research. Otherwise he can fuck off.
scoff-law@reddit
This is pure MAGA horseshit. Pluto not being a planet anymore gets rolled into bitching about how things are too woke now. It has nothing to do with science and everything to do with newsbytes for fools.

Lame, but not unexpected from this anti-scientific regime. If Plutoâs a planet then so is Ceres, and so is the Moon.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
NW_Forester@reddit
We should call the moon a planet so we can claim we have already walked on another planet. The moon is bigger than pluto afterall.
Ingonyama70@reddit
Aren't there several dozen, if not several HUNDRED, Pluto-sozed objects orbiting the Sun right now?
I grew up thinking of Pluto as a planet too, but if we stick to this classification, there's gonna be a LOT more than 9 planets swirling around overhead.
Sunday_Schoolz@reddit
With all due respect, our moon is larger than Pluto. If one is a satellite and bigger than the other, the other is not a planet.

The centre of Pluto, Mr. Smith, is made up of a substance called plutonium. Mines like these suck Plutonium up to the cities, where corporations use it to power everything, from diamond cars to golden showers. And the more we remove, the more Pluto shrinks.
âŚÂ But a few years ago, your scientists had noticed Pluto had gotten so small they couldnât even call it a planet any more. Should have been our wake up call. But the rich plutonians wonât wake up. And they love your dad telling everyone Plutoâs a planet, because that means they can keep mining until Pluto goes from planet to asteroid to meteor, and finally, poof.Â

Sorry Pluto, you really aren't an arbitrarily-decided object of one kind, but instead of another. I mean, either way, the images of Pluto from the New Horizons probe are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen.
Also, I believe the youtube channel minute physics has a good short video on why Pluto got the boot.
JoshDunkley@reddit
So does that mean Ceres, Eris, Haumea and Makemake become planets too? What about the other hundred or so awaiting official classification?
I dunno... it was declassified a planet for a good reason.
throwawayfromPA1701@reddit
I'm fine with making Pluto a planet if Eris is made a planet too, since it's bigger in mass.
yikesonbikes1230@reddit
Yes! Pluto is a planet! We learned about it in school! đ
