I want to know more about the volcanic eruptions. Will it just be a few, or all of them? Just in certain regions? Will long dormant volcanos erupt or only active ones? Will the ash clouds plunge us into an ice age?
GusherBrush@reddit
Potential BOE and AMOC collapse simultaneously? What a year to be alive.
Tearakan@reddit
And super el nino, and food shortages already baked in, and drought across much of the US right before fire season, and AI bubble, private finance bubble, private equity bubble etc.
Talyar_@reddit
At least it's not going to be boring.
brickout@reddit
We got hit with the "may you live in interesting times" curse
Estuans@reddit
What if we were to as a human species all go swim in the Atlantic clock wise to help keep the AMOC spinning. I'm sure we all did this as children in our round pools.
Gonna need to tap into the top minds of the current US administration on this.
MistThePerfume@reddit
This is the kind of creative thinking we need to get through this mess we’ve created!
Empty-Equipment9273@reddit
And strongest El Niño in recorded history possibly
GusherBrush@reddit
It's normally in the mid-60s where I live in the US...it's going to be in the mid-80s in a few days.
I'm about to get another air purifier for this upcoming fire season.
RottenFarthole@reddit
Yeah we've got 3 seasons now. Spring, Summer and Fire...
Admirable_Advice8831@reddit
Winter is... not coming any longer!
littlebean82@reddit
Come to Canada, we have lots of winter to share!
AdventurousAd3515@reddit
I would but your government says no unless I have $1M or am a doctor 😂
Straight-Balance830@reddit
Everything changed when the fire season attacked
katarina-stratford@reddit
We're over halfway through Autumn in Australia rn and today is forecast to be 26C/79F. Everyone keeps talking about how "nice" the weather is..
GusherBrush@reddit
It's horrifying. I want to enjoy it more like the others, but these sunny, warm days are clouded by the reality of where we're all heading.
midgethemage@reddit
It's a horrifying inevitability, but I'm trying to enjoy it before it gets bad bad
katarina-stratford@reddit
The Bureau of Meteorology still hasn't declared an El Nino yet.
GusherBrush@reddit
I expect that to change by the end of May.
EastTyne1191@reddit
I'm in the same area, I believe. I have been telling my friends that I am predicting a drop off of wet weather in mid-May with a surge directly into summer. Feels like I was off by a few weeks.
To say the forecast fills me with dread is an understatement.
EbonyPeat@reddit
Same here, norm 60, going to be 80. Batten down the hatches on fire season up north.
kickme2@reddit
But the Dow!
Jovan_Knight005@reddit
But, unfortunately there's more.
kingtacticool@reddit
But wait, theres more!^tm
False_Raven@reddit
Why fall off a cliff when you can fly off of it?
Xoxrocks@reddit
Chicken and egg - no ice removes the driving density change that drives the AMOC. No ice requires atmospheric heat transfer increases (high humidity, big storms) that increase without the AMOC
Indigo_Sunset@reddit
Well, they were likely to come to a head together like this for any one of them to really occur.
jucapiga@reddit
whats boe and amoc?
AutoModerator@reddit
Blue Ocean Event (BOE) is a term used to describe a phenomenon related to climate change and the Artic ocean, where it has become ice-free or nearly ice-free, which could have significant impacts on the Earth's climate system. This term has been used by scientists and researchers to describe the potential environmental and societal consequences of a rapidly melting Arctic, including sea-level rise, changes in ocean currents, and impacts on marine ecosystems.
When will a BOE happen?
Scientists predict that the Arctic could experience a BOE within the next few decades if current rates of ice loss continue. When a BOE does occur, it is likely to have significant impacts on the Earth's climate system, including changes to ocean circulation patterns and sea level rise.
Has a BOE ever occurred?
A BOE in the Arctic has not yet occurred in modern times. However, there has been a significant decrease in the Arctic sea ice extent in recent decades, and the Arctic sea ice cover has been reaching record lows during the summer months. This suggests that a BOE may be a possibility in the future if current trends of sea ice decline continue.

Cassandra Complex
Fine_Section_172@reddit
Earth's climate is complex, the future situation is more exciting because we have other MOCs and studying AMOC alone is not enough.
And there is a new research called the SAMOC Initiative started 5 yr ago.
So, any changes to the AMOC or any other MOC will impact the other MOC.
I guess that means we are entering uncharted territory.
Purple_Puffer@reddit
Also, the coldest year for the rest of your life.
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
As a European, this might be the warmest summer of the millennium if this collapses
Warstorm1993@reddit
Nope, summer will still be very hot, similar to what we have in eastern Canada. But continental Europe will risk having canadian winter and polar vortex.
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
Hotter than now or ?
Kazaryn@reddit
Yes. Canadas weather is from +5-> -40°C in Winter and from 0->40°c summer.
Source, am Canadian.
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
Fuck.
Kazaryn@reddit
I wouldn't panic just yet. This source is kinda sus and I would wait to see if more science based articles come out supporting this.
If you want actual actionable advice, learn about gardening and especially make a study of what your country grows, what currently flourishes, learn about your soul type etc. And then take a look at Canada or perhaps Norway does for growing things. You can also get a small 4' greenhouse from Amazon with lights and learn how to grow stuff in your home space if you make the room. From there you can support with a solar panel that charges a battery that provides power to it. Take it in steps and soon you'll have a gardening hobby you just can't get rid of.
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
Already done. I started stockpiling water, white gas for my camp stove, and dried food when the Iran war started.
Warstorm1993@reddit
Yes, with more extrême in temperature, precipitation and pressure difference
darkpsychicenergy@reddit
Newer analysis suggests that the overall increase in global temperature may offset the cooling effect expected by AMOC collapse and the more likely and concerning effect will be extreme drought due to the loss of the AMOC pulling warm — and *moisture laden* air and precipitation up towards Northwest Europe.

Not exactly - AMOC collapse is a gradual process that will be 50% collapses by 2100 (https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/biohacker-says-partner-top-1-37092773) whereas BOE is likely to occur this september (https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/s/ZBuf6K32ty)
bizh_gki@reddit
I thought at first that your trolling was well-played even if not entirely welcome, but your second link is on topic giving me reason to suspect your first link is in error. A heads up, no pun intended.
Definitely a lot of fear around collapse and for good reason, but fear of course is a monster that is as inflated as we allow it to be. Thank you for pointing out that the AMOC collapse is not expected to happen like a disaster movie.
j_mantuf@reddit
I think we, scientists included, don’t know how truly fucked we are.
We can utilize cutting edge models and AI etc to give a very educated best guess, but it still doesn’t mean those estimates are going to be accurate.
The omni-crisis is going to rapidly unfold.
JosBosmans@reddit
Going for mere semantics, did you decidedly write "omni-crisis" instead of, or referring to a "polycrisis" by any other name?
j_mantuf@reddit
Yup! My bad, will switch
JosBosmans@reddit
Didn't mean no bad. :l Just wondered.. eh, let's cherish a beautiful Friday, while supplies last. (:
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
Kinda laughing at the idea of using AI to predict the collapse. Thus generating more carbon, fueling the collapse T-T
icancheckyourhead@reddit
Wait until you hear about how much AI is being used by “both sides” to slice and dice the election maps. It’s a joke that anyone in politics is on one side or another. They are all doing the same things on the back end for power and not actual survival. Decorum aside, no administration has ever taken this topic seriously and they are now actively making it worse to try to game elections.
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Right? Pisses me off every time someone projects “AI will innovate and save us!” Ok the. Why are they focused on selling me chatbots that tell me to kill myself instead of solving the climate crisis? Right, cuz they are accelerationists and actually want billions of people to die rapidly so the rich don’t have to sacrifice an ounce of their comfort.
summercookiess@reddit
Hold up, are there actually chatbots telling you to kys for the sake of climate change?
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
My apologies for the confusion.
They are selling chatbots that tell you to kys. The CEOs argue that changing them would make their personalities “less genuine.”
They are doing that instead of programming AI to solve climate change.
Because they have no intention to solve climate change.

Which one?
AquaMoonCoffee@reddit
This is an extremely clickbait article that barely mentions the actual study at all, and instead just references movies and a few other random studies. The study in question was asserting the Younger Dryas was caused by an initial period of intense volcanism which tipped the atmosphere over a delicate boundary, which among other things would have caused global dimming and expanding sea ice in the North Atlantic, causing the AMOC to quickly slowdown over a period of about 100 years. The AMOC slowdown/collapse of the Younger Dryas and how quickly it happened has always been known it was just previously thought to have been caused by an impact event until about the 2010s.

Hey, give the AI author a break! They can only steal so much!

People have wondered whether the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation was capable of collapsing. A new study posted April 29th confirms it absolutely has in the past, and can now because of human-driven climate change, triggering a series of volcanic eruptions. That this was posted by ABC News also demonstrates how the study of collapse is now mainstream and normalized, and should be justification for our community.

Do you mean that the AMOC collapse was triggered by volcanic eruptions, or the historic collapse(s) triggered eruptions?
Unlikely-Program-827@reddit
Was triggered by eruptions
