Sorry abit of a vent and a question and looking for advice really or the confidence to go ahead with this.
Im a builder (labourer job title) been in the trade for well over 10 years now and work for a 3 man company. We mainly do extensions start to finish and some small renovations like bathrooms/wall knock through etc. I do love this job and the guy i work for.
My issues are with my college and the way hes treated. He is several years older and only been in the trade for about 5 years as a newbie. Hes abit if a know it all so i although i try and help/teach him things he wont listen and regularly messes things up often costing a hell of alot of money to reolace which obvioaly the boss covers.
We are left to work together quiet often and the same situation arrises. If i do call him out on these things its simply gets brushed of as a "meh" and when the boss does return my collegue will act dumb like thats what he though he was supposed to do. My boss will then look to me like im supposed to be control of the situation. The only way i can control these situations is by doing things myself, in which case he will either sit on his phone or or mither asking for when needs to be done, but i cant trust him with simple tasks bar 2 or 3 things that he is good at but rarely required. When we do work alone he also disappears sometime for couple of hours at a time because he needs to pick something up or go home for a dump (something he wont do if the boss is around) so it feels like im doing all the work.
The way i see it, we both earn the same £13.50ph. Hes provided with a van and fuel, doesnt look after this van as its oftwn a mess and kept in a poor condition and uses it heavily for personal use and side work on weekends. and is alway given 1st refusal on tools that have been replaced that are still in good condition but no longer needed. I dont drive so rely on public transport and sometime spend £80 week to get to and from work.
Its almost like im expected to be in somesort of a supervisor role, but he wont be told, doesnt care and the way i see it he gets way more out of this job than i do.
I have the skills to move on and go out working for myself. I am about to sit my driving test soon so hopefully will be mobile (i dont expect my employer to provide anything in terms of transport btw)i just jeed to confidence to do this and do people think its worth it?
Honestly i dont feel i can go my boss with my concerns because because it woukd cause tension between the 3 of us and we do get along really well
Despite my low wages i do recieve a pension and full holidays and genuinly love and resoect my employer. But all of this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

You need to learn to drive asap. I would pass your test and then find another employer

You need to have that conversation and explain what's up going on. Don't come at it as if you're looking for more money or expecting more just that you are covering up for all of your colleagues issues.
If the boss won't listen then that's your cue to set out on your own without telling them.

As someone who has run a business for nearly 30 years, no employee should feel any reason not to move on if they have a better offer or want to go it alone. All I would expect is that they do it in the right way, give me the required notice, don't try to poach clients, etc.
Never had any issues because we treated people fairly and often an employee would actually give us more notice than required so we had time to get someone in and up to speed. Remained on good terms with all our former staff, still in contact with a few.
So if you are on good terms with your boss and want to leave, that's fine. Just do it in the right way and if your boss is reasonable he'll understand and would wish you all the best.

Can't believe you're working for minimum wage, wtf

Mate, seriously? I just took on an 18yr old receptionist who is doing her A levels. She is on the same wage as you. She only answers the phone occasionally and pushes a button to open the door.
Find something else. All employers have to provide holiday pay and a pension it’s not a perk.

Out of curiosity, what area are you based?

Fuck that mate.. wee prick is taking the piss out of you. I’d give him an ultimatum that he gets the finger out rapid, or the gaffer will be having words. Don’t let folk take liberties

Start with trying to get some weekend or evening jobs. It will be long days and tough times but will help grow business before you fully quit.if you are good at what you do I reckon within a year you will be on your own earning more than what you do at the minute.if you have the savings to cover for a say 6 months of expenses and feel brave you could go all in but is hard to adjust from a guaranteed wage each week/month to who knows when your getting paid again.
