When you have your own engineers and manufacturers design and manufacture a machine gun, they get the experience of taking on such a task which creates an industry for it and allows for training on it which sustains the industry in the event that they are in a position where they can't just copy a design.
NATO standardization is great in a lot of ways, but the procurement issues NATO currently faces (while not an existential problem) are a direct result of that.
The AA-52 was a great design, the FN MAG wasn't considerably better. Anyway that's not the only criteria to consider, there's also cost, workshare, intellectual property, know-how, national independence, long-term maintenance, and so on
The AA-52 predates the design of the MAG and was already in widespread use by the time the MAG was adopted. Switching to a new gun (that also uses different ammunition) when you have just spend all that money making and distributing the existing design doesn't really make sense.
Now the French do get a lot of shit over their small arms choices (such as retaining the 7.5mm cartridge rather than adopting 7.62mm NATO like everyone else) after WW2 and while a lot of it WAS petty nationalism (the French didn't take being reduced to 2nd rate status from a major empire after WW2 too well and that's putting it lightly) there was also another reason: the need to kick-start the local industry after the damage it suffered due to the war and the desire to retain manufacturing jobs in France : to say that France was devastated by WW2 would be an understatement and every franc spent on making MAS-49s and 7.5mm ammunition was a franc spent on keeping a French factory open and French workers employed.
Well it was lighter for one thing, and France uses the FN MAG now. But why shouldn't they have given work to their engineers and factories? Many countries use foreign equipment because they can't make their own.
Nice question but EXTREMLY simple answer, its better in a lot of point but in first, this reason:
-1)AA-52( modernized in 7.62x51 is AANF1) came years earlier than FN MAG (1951/52 vs 1958).
True other points:
-2) SIZE:
FN MAG/M240 HAS TWICE if not a more... of the BULKINESS of the AA-52/AANF1, and because it's a tube this last one is extremely easy to carry for long and hard walk (its like a mg34 but even smaller).
980mm with cross retracted vs 1270mm (FN MAG 58) AND by removing the barrel, 500mm, you can put all that in a school bag.
That's one if not THE smallest 7.62 like's MG ever designed.
(EDIT Like the Ohio Ordnance REAPR MG 338 but in a easier and smaller package and that 70 years ago. They possibly copy that from the AA52 even if the enormus lenght of the REAPR was a obvious problem)
-3) CREW TRAINING/ OPERATION:
easy to work, even for dumb guy with is lever-delayed Blowback operation.even simlper than the FN MAG.
-4) COST/ WEIGHT/DURABILITY: cost effective too, simpler design reduce weight, but the gun its still not really light between 9kg- 9.7kg (standard) and 10.7kg (AA52/AANF1 with the extremly tick barrel not the normal one)
VS
FN MAG 58 prototyp 11kg BUT more 13kg for the true FN MAG 1958 adopted and variant,M240 bravo with standard barrel not heavy tick one like on the AA52 is still 12,5kg minimum...
On a AA52/AANF1all parts are extremely tick to resist extremely difficult environment without proper maintaining ( a litte like a AK is some way but possibly even more extrem ...) that why its still heavy/dense compare what is look.
PS: A modern AA52/AANF1 could be weighting under 5kg if not less...
IWI NEGEV 7.62 is only 7.8kg
KAC AMG or LAMG (7.62 versions ) weight between 6.35kg too only 5.1kg, and a both of them are gas perated ... a lever delayed blowback mg AA52AANF1 can realistically weight easily under 5kg with those two previous examples, because with is different operating system less parts are required so smaller receiver etc... massive gain of weight.
A lighter 7.62 ( not 5.56) CETME AMELI but lever-delayed blowback and not roller-delayed blowback.(sorry for the spelling mistake my computer keyboard is a little broken =) )
France put/puts a lot of weight into maintaining domestic designs and production for their service weapons, and I can see the merits of it, you don't want a foreign country shifting policy or entering into conflict to affect your ability to arm your troops and defend your country or interests.
Internet_Troll14@reddit
I dont understand why France use this weapon instead of FN MAG. A lot weapon choices by France that make me want to ask why.
Lu1zBeast@reddit
French pride, they domestically produced many of their guns until recently I think.
Internet_Troll14@reddit
Why can't France just copy other nation design??

“The French copy no one, and no one copies the French.”
Haxeu@reddit
That quote goes really hard when you ignore all the times other nation copied the French
Kookanoodles@reddit
Why should they?
Internet_Troll14@reddit
Because other nations have better design.

Why is it that when France produces their own weapons the reason is "French pride", it's called strategic autonomy.

France producing their own weapons = French pride (arrogance)
Any other country doing the same = Strategic autonomy
That's how anglos think. The truth is they are the prideful ones snickering at France for daring to try and keep some military independence.

Because the French wanted their machine gun to fulfill a SAW role and the AA-52 is way better at that than the FN MAG.

The AA-52 came out 6 years before the FN MAG, so it would make no sense to switch to a new gun when yours are still fairly new

If I remember right this thing had extremely high rate of fire over the already high AA-52 due to the new bolt used to chamber 7.62 NATO
