Do you think any EU balkan country will try to veto Montenegro’s accession?

Possible?
DragonflyOwn5617@reddit
I don't think it will be EU Balkan countries vetoing it, most likely another Austria/Netherlands situation like it was with Schengen for Bulgaria and Romania
YogurtclosetOpen3567@reddit (OP)
Why would netherlands veto?
DragonflyOwn5617@reddit
There are rising tensions with alleged and actual Russian controlled figures in EU politics and Montenegro is not doing good in that regard. Especially with Orban recently and people propagandizing that Radev in Bulgaria will be the next Orban, which is just stupid, but it still worries people a lot and reasonably so
That being said - EU Balkans don't really take strong positions on that enough to veto, but countries like Austria or the Netherlands could easily use that reasoning to cover up their distaste and underlying racism towards Eastern Europe with that exact reasoning or similar, without actually helping progress in that regard
That's exactly what they did with Romania and Bulgaria when we covered everything for Schengen and were severely delayed and still got vetoed, because of some nebulous reasons, that were just to mask up their lack of care for anything east of Austria itself
Prigorec-Medjimurec@reddit
I think it was agreed upon that Montenegro's accession treaty will have a temporary pause on some of its veto rights. That is for a couple of years they have agreed to not have veto rights on some topics while they still have it on other topics.
But yeah, the EUs veto system needs to get fixed.
NightZT@reddit
Sad thing is, the main reason why Austria was blocking were some local elections. The far right party was leading in the polls and the center right party needed to manufacture something to claim they are combating migration from the middle east. They were in charge of foreign affairs at that time and just claimed Bulgaria can't handle border controls. After the election was over they cheeringly claimed to have fixed the issue singlehandedly and now Bulgaria can do border controlls, without doing anything really. A big stupid, shameful PR stunt with major consequences
DragonflyOwn5617@reddit
It was disheartening as I said in another comment, because Bulgaria is and was a good example of proper EU border control, especially with the tough times and situations that happened, and I recently returned to the Schengen veto topic to read about it and the comments at the time, so for me it was warm in memory and the whole thing about discrimination against Easterners especially in countries like Austria is very actual, but I do understand that it wasn't an univocal decision and was the logical and good move for rightists within those countries
NightZT@reddit
Yeah I know from personal experience, the average Austrian however believes what stupid shit the Kronenzeitung (biggest newspaper) is writing and what they write is determined by which party (right wing or far right) pays them more and they will hallucinate horrorstories if it's currently useful to their agenda and that discrimination you describe can easily be weaponized
dwartbg9@reddit
The shitty thing is that Bulgaria is actually having great border control. If it wasn't the case, the immigrant issues could've been wayyyy worse. Bulgaria is actually a success story of a country defending the EU borders properly.

DragonflyOwn5617@reddit
I like how you are consistently replying to my comments all across Reddit lol, but yea, I live around a border in Bulgaria and it's definitely one of the things we do well, so what Austria and the Netherlands did back then is even more disheartening in retrospect and just went to show the real attitude of some populations against "second-tier" EU members
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Austria being neutral out of NATO itself has some neutrality historical and political hegemony, however supports for example EU expansion to Balkans but it's definitely over strong criteria than anything else.
For example it's stated that Albania is going good now and should start closing chapters in May making it suitable to enter EU in 2030.
I personally if negotiations are done with them, don't believe any EU country will veto.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
I also don't think Albania will be vetoed when time comes until 2030 and after Montenegro gets in.
However for example Albania might decide in future to veto for example N.Macedonia which will be eligible.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
The bigger changes are Balkan countries vetoying themselves over EU, for example Albania to veto N.Macedonia or other example.
This can mean veto over negotiations or refusal to ratify the agreement before the Balkan country enters EU.
Myridinn@reddit
Out of curiosity, why are you active on every post regarding EU integrations (no matter which country is it for), and NM and Serbia are always mentioned by your side. You think they are nationalists? 90% of the Balkan countries are like that. I am assuming you are either Bulgarian or Greek, whenever you people go to the Americas you constantly have to remind everyone about your countries, at least Serbs and Macedonians integrate and don’t act superior on this side of the world.. God I am glad I left the Balkans..
CasperGwamm@reddit
Don't think Croatia will be blocking Montenegro, despite Serbia trying to provoke a conflict between them. Besides, it's in Croatia's interest that Montenegro joins.
Interesting article here: https://www.antenam.net/clanak/sokol-hrvatska-nece-blokirati-eu-put-crne-gore-bice-podrska-suverenistickim-snagama-popovic-crnogorska-nacija-je-pred-nestankom
Sea-Bend-5914@reddit
If you mean the Jasenovac resolution, then it is solely your fault for throwing a tantrum about it.
XenophonSoulis@reddit
If/when Montenegro and Albania join, the biggest beneficiaries, at least as far as geography is concerned, are going to be Croatia and Greece. The reason is that there will be a direct connection between us through the two, which will make Croatia more important for transportation than it already is and will provide a shorter way from Greece to the rest of the EU (because the Bulgaria/Romania/Hungary way is kinda long). But a lot of infrastructure would have to be constructed for this to become practical. The infrastructure through North Macedonia and Serbia is theoretically better, but it also needs lots of work, plus I can't see either of them getting in the EU any time soon.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Skopje or Serbia will never get into EU as EU itself will not want nationalism with disputes inside, and these countries also are not suitable.
ElPescadorVeins@reddit
I’d be more concerned about Austria tbh.
YogurtclosetOpen3567@reddit (OP)
Why Austria?
Glass_Test_9944@reddit
I guess because of that. Netherlands also
BardhyliX@reddit
Austria talking about immigrants is very funny considering half of births in vienna are to immigrants.
Budget_Insurance329@reddit
Montenegro doesn’t have a border with us though
ElPescadorVeins@reddit
Yes, pretty much.
BardhyliX@reddit
I don't think any balkan country in the EU has a vendetta against Montenegro, they're usually neutral on most if not everything.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Montenegro is the next EU state starting January 1st 2028.
It will be a sucsefful Balkan country integration into the EU and a prime example that enlargement works.
After that Albania in 2030 as it's already stated.
I don't believe any prospects that Bosnia, Serbia or N.Macedonia have. Ukraine is far from it anyway but will progress.
I also expect Moldavia to decide on reunification with Romania.
NoSync22@reddit
Moldovia unifying with Romania is imho extremely unlikely until their economy picks up and the PMR issue is solved.
Puzzled-Call3724@reddit
Montenegro’s integration is strategic for west serving reducing the Russian intervention. That’s why Brussels will support heavily and no one will care what smaller Balkan countries think. Let’s be realistic
BarskiPatzow@reddit
I hope not.
PlamenIB@reddit
Montenegro had some beef with Croatia some years ago but I believe they resolved the issue. And Bulgaria and Romania have nothing to do with Montenegro. But I believe they should be worried about Austria and The Netherlands. I wish to say “the things are different now” but who knows. And sometimes it feels like France is not that keen on EU enlargement but maybe I am wrong.
MinimumArt8781@reddit
In Romania we do like Montenegro, a consistent amount of Romanians do travel for summer vacations there. We also appreciate the Montenegrin people for their respectful reaction to the Bus accident in 2013 and in general a good attitude twords us. I don't think anyone will block it, it's a small country, easy to defend the borders, they present no harm to anyone and have always been decent people.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Romania priority is what will happen with Moldavia than with any Balkans for which you have nothing against.
Probably you support Albania also but the question is if unification with Moldova will happen or it will enter EU as a single country.
MinimumArt8781@reddit
Moldova is a closed subject already, they can either unite with us (as the Parliament in 2018 decided) or we will do anything to have them In the EU. I'm not talking about that because it's a well known position. We also need another route to west
DartVejder@reddit
It's possible. I think that it wouldn't be any particular country but EU as a whole because Montenegro is relatively small, isolated, easily influenced by Serbia because of its huge Serb minority, and has an organised crime problem.
EU could possibly be wary of giving them veto power and in that case they'll be offered to either join at a later date, together with Serbia, or join under some second-class arrangement that doesn't include veto power.
Honestly if I was Montenegrin, I wouldn't start cheering until the moment the country becomes the member.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
No because they have already given the ok ,the negotiation is/was ongoing ,if smth important had popped up ,they would have already vetoed it.
azuratios@reddit
Can the western energy corridors be built without Bosnia? I am not sure about the logistics with the small border of Montenegro, but Balkan countries will profit the most after Montenegro+Albania join, especially Greece and Croatia. So veto is out of the question whatever nationalistic stuff you read online.
PasicT@reddit
No, it can't.
PasicT@reddit
Croatia, possibly.
alkorisno@reddit
Doubt it, they are useful to be thrown at the tanks in Ukraine
Starfalloss@reddit
I sure hope not that’d be fking retarded.
bender__futurama@reddit
Croatia? But I don't think so, Montenegro apologized for the wars in the 90s, it is not theirs fault, Serbs did it.
ElTxarne@reddit
arent montenegrins just beach-serbs? like ive seen some self-identification stats that basically half of the montenegrin population feels whichever way is better at the time
blitzfreak_69@reddit
No, we are not. And that reduction of our history, culture and identity, is wildly inappropriate.
oioioioioioiioo@reddit
Basically some see themselves as Serbs and some as exclusively Montenegro ethnic citizens, but it's mainly for political reasons
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
They are.
Glass_Test_9944@reddit
Why you mention Bulgaria and Romania and you don't say anything about Slovenia and Croatia? Also I don't think so.
Stverghame@reddit
He did mention Croatia, and he might not consider Slovenia as Balkan.
Glass_Test_9944@reddit
He edited the description later
Stverghame@reddit
Ahhh oka!
SwimmingAttention133@reddit
If there is any chance for that its probably by Croatia for 90's wars. And even that is unlikely. Why would Romania and Bulgaria veto Montenegro ?
YogurtclosetOpen3567@reddit (OP)
They dont want to add new members as they are the second most rexent?
SwimmingAttention133@reddit
Are there any benefits for that and i am not aware of it ? If that's the case maybe some politician can suck something out of his ass but otherwise i doubt it
determine96@reddit
I don't see why Bulgaria or Romania would veto Montenegro..
Young_Owl99@reddit
Montenegro can be the least hated Balkan country. If someone has a chance it is them.
OkoMushrooom@reddit
Do you have a Bulgarian minority 🤣?
Ok-Goal-3696@reddit
Nope
Miserable-Ground-379@reddit
I hope not
Elmalukat@reddit
No, won’t happen
