Number Spoofed for HMRC Scam? what to do?

Hi All,

I had a random call from a stranger this morning. I thought he was initially calling me a scammer, but I then realised he was saying my number is being used in an HMRC scam and that he received a call which came through as my number.

I've had this number since I was at school. Will they move on from spoofing my number, or is it best to take the hit and request a number change now?

I didn't speak to the gentleman on the phone for long; I was more in shock and distracted at work, not sure if I should have asked any other questions.

Am I stuck? Is a new number the best or only way?

I don't want to be getting random calls from people that have fallen victim to a scam using my number or my number being blocked or blacklisted as it's been spoofed for ilegal acitivity.

At the same time, it will be frustrating changing a number that I've had for over 10 years, from elderly relatives with my number written down on a pad to distant friends and work contacts.
