Do you know of any rising Subcultures in the UK ?

Of course, we know about the rise of ultras for small teams in the UK, the gen Z walking group, Zines seem to be a big thing again, Free parties and Tekno (with a k!) are back in the south of England... just wondering if you had heard of anything ? Or things that you saw that sparked your curiosity
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
I’ve noticed ultras increasing in popularity in Manchester too.
I think a lot of younger millennials have been doing the walking group just as long as Gen Z. I think it was always connected with dating and meeting young healthy people your agre, outside of a bar or drinking event. I think it was in response to a declining drinking culture (expensive and health choices) and a lot of young people moving in waves to huge cities and wanting to make friends. Sports clubs seem to be quite gendered. I personally think their secret ingredient to the walking culture is romance haha.
Rico1983@reddit
Hockey is the fastest growing team sport in the country. The Storm moving back to the AO Arena will be interesting to see what sort of crowds they can attract.
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Yeah we’re an ice hockey family and I’m keen for the new planet ice in Trafford and for storm at the AO. Planet ice are trying to punish storm and refusing to let them train on the rink if they don’t have their matches there so unsure what will happen!
Rico1983@reddit
Planet Ice? Being an absolute shitshow of a company?! I won't hear it!
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Hahaha yeah shocker
Rico1983@reddit
I've never been to Altringham but I often used to go to the arena back in the day when you were playing the Devils. Glad for you guys that you're going home.
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Well seeing as it was only ever supposed to be temporary when it was made, it’s rotting.
Rico1983@reddit
Yeah, but we don't ever say that to the traffic cone bastards though.
BoopingBurrito@reddit
Probably showing my age here, but what's an ultra?
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Maybe I’m wrong but I thought it was a football fan who paint themselves, has the flares, drums or other ways to show support. It’s rowdy but it’s not meant to be threatening or anything. Just passionate “ultra fans”.
There’s also the ultra marathon which I’m hearing more and more people doing but it’s not quite at subculture popularity (yet)
I think in the OPs post ( the context of teams and Scotland) I’m pretty confident it’s the former not the latter, or at least that’s what I’m talking about in mine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultras
BoopingBurrito@reddit
Thanks, just not a term I've come across before!
The_39th_Step@reddit
I think the hiking/camping thing is particularly relevant here in Manchester due to us being close to the Peaks/Lakes etc.
I have occasionally gone to watch West Didsbury and Chorlton (despite being a Fulham fan), so I get that. I’m a Londoner in Manchester before you ask. No born and bred Manc supports Fulham haha
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Yeah I think a lot of fans just crave the football from their youth and the ability to actually attend and enjoy the match, have a beer etc.
Though this is really just me echoing what the guys in my friend group say, as I really really don’t follow it.
I do think ice hockey is going to get a lot of attention. The atmosphere is great, the beers are huge, the music is really upbeat and energetic, and the sports easy to pick up on the rules and get into it.
tannercolin@reddit
I'm a millennial, I got really into walking during covid and just kind of stuck with it. Walking is nice
Joeboy@reddit
Maybe it's always been there, but the open mic / folk session scene seems pretty healthy.
Own-Professional4471@reddit
Folk is getting popular with young folk again, not just the music but rambles to see standing stones, making zines etc. Hardcore punk is also having a resurgence, have seen young folk adopt the look of 90s hardcore, including cut and paste flyers, band shorts of the era etc. Feels weird to see having been about first time around.
Macrihanishautomatic@reddit
I’d love to see Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention back in the charts.
Plenty_Suspect_3446@reddit
I had no idea folk was making a resurgence. I bought a Steeleye Span record for 3 quid last year. But im a typical mid 30s reddit male.
TheVonTurbo@reddit
Everyone I know seems to be reading Weird Walk! No bad thing mind.
Initial_Total_7028@reddit
Re punk, speaking as a young person with a mohawk and battle jacket, it feels less like a music genre simply regaining popularity and much more about the underlying politics. We're seeing England flags being thrown up everywhere and white supremacist thugs openly marching in the streets, and a lot of us no longer see quiet or moderate responses as appropriate. It's not so much a return to 90s hardcore except in terms of aesthetics, it's a return to anarchists looking to brawl with the National Front.
gorroval@reddit
Re: folk, I love that when I go to see Morris sides (which sadly isn't often where I am now) the old men are starting to be outnumbered by (often very obviously queer) young people. The children yearn for the Stick and Bucket Dance.

sammyglumdrops@reddit
Ultras isn’t new, it just means hardcore football fans, like the type of who follow their team to any game. I don’t know anything about football but have just heard friends who are into it refer to it.
Also, I think OP means Zyn, rather than zines — i.e., a popular brand of nicotine pouches.
GiveYouNothing92@reddit
it wasn't a big thing in the UK until it started growing in maybe the late 00s.
Typical-Audience3278@reddit
Fanzines were vitally important to the punk scene, especially during the early days. Sniffin’ Glue was like… well, bible is entirely the wrong word for a punk fanzine from 1976 but you get my drift
GiveYouNothing92@reddit
I was talking about football "ultra" culture.

Ultras is just a new name for Hooligans

Thanks for your nuanced insight.
sammyglumdrops@reddit
Fair. I’m 27 so makes sense that I always heard it in school growing up in the 2000’s, which makes it feel old to me!
wordsfromlee@reddit
Zines are short for fanzine. Hand made magazines dedicated to certain subjects made by fans. They were especially big in underground punk music in the 70s and 80s.
Lopsided_Rooster6819@reddit
I thought the ultras were a Russian football hooligan group !

Hardcore (music genre) seems to be a resurgence, although maybe that’s just local to me. /r/ukhc is getting more active too. Went to a local show last month (not aware of any in this City since I put one on with a friend 20 years ago) and it was sold out and the crowd was pretty crazy (too crazy for my old self)
paulbamf@reddit
Dare I say that Turnstile going mainstream could be helping at grassroots level too?

GiveYouNothing92@reddit
Nah it's a global thing, hardcore is definitely having a moment in the mid 20s with the youth.
dontyajustlovepasta@reddit
Think it probably speaks to a lot of youth disaffection at the moment to be honest, saying as someone who's gotten into it in the last couple of years. Feels good to have an outlet for a lot of very real anger at the state of the world right now
phatboi23@reddit
as someone who grew up on it in the 90's and 2000's...
GOOD.
hardcore will never die!
SmugPolyamorist@reddit
I'm in my 40s and used to go to lots of hardcore nights back in the late 90s / early 00s. Have been to mums against donk, pixelate and nitecawr recently, and it's an amazing scene. Honestly the kids are probably doing a better job of it than we ever did. It is weird being the oldest person at an event though.
blizeH@reddit
I was talking about a different kind of hardcore, but it’s good to hear this is making a comeback too :D

Fine_Cress_649@reddit
The what?
I was briefly involved with a Young Ramblers group. The youngest of them was 52.
The_39th_Step@reddit
It’s funny, it must be a regional thing. There’s loads of groups of young people who go hiking here on the weekends. I live in Manchester and the trains to the Peaks every weekend are rammed with young walkers. I’m 30, so I no longer count as young, but I’ve been doing this for a while and it’s got so much more popular.
I’m into football so I vaguely know about the Ultra thing in Scotland. The tekno thing in the South surprised me. I’m from the South but I’m more London facing (that’s where my friends and family are from). It seems like this tekno thing is more of a Bristol, Brighton and Bournemouth thing, which are not cities I know well.
shadyasahastings@reddit
I’m under 30 in Bournemouth and I have no idea what the hell tekno is, can you please enlighten me? There is a guy I work with (similar age) who speaks about going to raves, is it related to that? Technically I think I’d be classed as Gen Z but this thread has just reaffirmed to me how out of touch I am, lol!

A lot of us (including me) are into hikeing, wildcamping and mountaineering ect that could be what they mean
Fine_Cress_649@reddit
It's interesting - when I was in my 20s nobody hiked except maybe me. So I got into more "extreme" things in the mountains that young people do do like mountain biking, climbing etc. Deep down maybe I'd be happier just pottering about.
beingthehunt@reddit
My guess (which is completely based on personal experience and no stats to back it up) is that the number of younger people joining/starting walking groups has increased in recent years, but it still pales in comparison to the number of older walkers.
I also think that people tend to enjoy the company of people their own age more, so rather than joining established groups that have a higher average age, young people are more likely to start new groups.

I believe it's to do with 'Ultra violence' and football.
GarwayHFDS@reddit
Cheers, that was the reference I thought it was, though I had no idea small teams in Scotland suffered from such a problem. Perhaps friendly banter but nothing more. Is there any particular small team that has a "reputation"?
PumpkinJambo@reddit
There’s a documentary series on bbc iplayer about it. It’s called Ultras.
Big_Outcome8330@reddit
To me ultras are mainly flares and drums, all in the same block singing/chanting the whole game, marches to the game. Sometimes it's spills over into disorder but I wouldn't say violence is an integral part of it
SuuperD@reddit
Ultras are usually the violent part of any clubs supporters.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
No it's football fans who sing all game like European fans and tend to wear the same clothes as each other but it isn't the club kits. Crystal palace had had it for years. It's a bit tin pot.
RetroRegretso@reddit
Then they have absolutely no reason to be so violent.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
It's not necessarily violence they are liked to as per the example I gave
Especially at the smaller clubs.
GiveYouNothing92@reddit
Ultra's, obsessed fan groups of a football clubs. The people that make giant banners (called tifo's), let off flairs, spend more time banging drums and chanting than watching the game, that kind of stuff. They usually inhabit a specific section of a stadium for every game. Has historically been more associated with football in places like Italy, Spain, South America and Eastern Europe.
It started being a bigger deal here from around the late 2000s. To the point that almost every football team in Scotland at whatever level will have some group of wee guys in ski masks and parkas in front of a banner saying "Block Eight Boys" or something. I would imagine it's probably similar in the lower levels of English football. Doesn't tend to be as big a thing in the EPL which is a bit more corporate.
As to whether they are inherently violent that's tricky. They aren't quite analogous to football casuals, people who deliberately meet up with other teams "firms" to have a ruck. Something that was huge in the 80s and had a bit of a resurgence in the 00s. But there is obviously a lot of overlap in culture. It being football they do have an association with trouble and controversy anyway.
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
It's what all the droogs are in to these days. If it's not ultraviolence, it's the old Ludwig Van.

Far-Hospital-9961@reddit
Hobby… or subculture?? THAT is the point I’m making. I am young and very much enjoy walking myself, but that being a way to set yourself apart from the rest of society (which is what a subculture is) seems a bit of a reach.
badgerkingtattoo@reddit
Perhaps make your point better next time. I think most people would agree that fucking CrossFit became a subculture for a while there. If you’re here to argue semantics on Reddit I would repeat myself: GO TOUCH SOME GRASS 🤣
Kris0r@reddit
So odd how nobody seems to be able to grasp your original point.
RetroRegretso@reddit

University cities are the place to be for subcultures imo
Alth12@reddit
Yeah they never went away. Free parties have been a thing for decades. Gen Z discovered the free party scene and joined in, they never started it or revived it...and yeah the scenes different now but the scene in 2016 was different to 2006, was different to 1996 was different to '86 etc.
alinalovescrisps@reddit
Absolutely. They've always been a thing
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Yeah I live in a city with a huge university population and lots of stuff for younger people to do. I also was lucky that it was quite cheap to drink and go to bars and festivals etc and it was just before ID checking got really strict, and we still had free parties.
Can imagine there’s so many more now because of the cost of going out etc but I think in the more rural places these parties must have remained pretty consistent.

Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
No it’s an organised group on set days and set times that walk a specific route, people are free to join and make friends. It’s really popular way to meet a partner. I’d say most older Gen Z I know met their long term partners at walking group. I know a few younger millennials who did too. As bars priced younger, poorer people put, and tinder and hinge started to be an awful experience, walking groups were a great way to make new friends if you land in a new city, which a lot of young people do.

Excellent to hear. I was 'adjacent' to that scene in my youth, but from what I could make out at the time it was somewhat smaller and focussed on the few styles of music that weren't catered for in the legal industry (hardtek and whatnot) ... and tbh I don't mind hardtek etc, but it's not something I'd actively seek out. I had thought that with the way things are going, it's an obvious scene to expand. Think I'd be in my element if I were a young gentleman at this time, but my body's old and shit now so I have to make do with one or two techno nights per year ahd be tucked up back in bed before the sun comes up 😄
tannercolin@reddit
How do I find these parties?
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
They never left 😉
Very cool to hear, though. When I was a young gentleman, they were quite a niche scene. I was in to freeparty-adjacent stuff, so knew folk who went to them but I've always been too much of a lightweight for that carry on. Thought for a while that they were due a *big* comeback - the legal route has become so expensive and in a lot of cases it feels like it's maybe more ... I don't know, like for show? I just wanna bust badass moves in a mucky basement, not dress in the all black uniform and bop around to marching techno, you know?

Is ultras related to football fans or we talking a small business initiative?
NoRun6253@reddit
Yeah it’s the new version of soccer casuals but in reality it’s just the kids of today in their all black attire.
YeDasASausage@reddit
Soccer casuals?
Ultra isn't a new term ultras have been round for years.
NoRun6253@reddit
Must be my ignorance then cause I’d never heard of them until a couple of years ago but apparently it’s been a thing for nearly thirty years now 🤦🏻♂️
budgiebirdman@reddit
Is this Chris Morris in a nappy asking?
KingKhram@reddit
I've never heard of any of these subcultures and don't know of any new ones
WRM710@reddit
Turning thirty and joining a running club. I promise it's not a cult.
Prestigious_Emu6039@reddit
We need a little less culture right now to be honest, we are up to our ears with them
Krismusic1@reddit
Well that's not true at all and this is talking about subculture. We could definitely do with more of that.
Timely_Cake_917@reddit
Plenty of cultures in shitty, unkempt flats
Heck_@reddit
What do you mean?
Mplus479@reddit
Microorganism cultures, you know, bacteria and mould.
Heck_@reddit
Ahahaha nice

It’s funny how these things bubble up under the radar, like the walking groups actually skewing super young now while the traditional ramblers stay grey. The Tekno scene returning is interesting too, feels like a direct reaction to how sanitized nightlife has become. If you dig around, there’s also a small but growing folk horror revival happening in the art and music scenes up north. Just goes to show you have to actually get out there to spot it before it hits the mainstream.
Extension-Truth@reddit
I’m actually wondering what the effects, if anything, of this push to get younger people off social media/tech will lead, i guess we’ll see some irl subcultures forming again
___Scenery_@reddit
There’s a big movement of electronic hip hop from the likes of ledbyher, fakemink, feng, wraith9, Jim legxacy, Elijah Aiken
Genuinely exciting new sound with a wave of new artists pushing it forward
