What’s A Good Brand For Pillows?
Posted by thescx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 28 comments
Hey peeps
I have always bought any pillow, gradually shifting away from hollow fibre to either duck feather/down and more recently memory foam but I’ve found these cheap pillows on Amazon might last 6-8 months then become uncomfortable.
I have tried memory foam pillows with a raised part to support the neck but I am not convinced it made much difference, though it could just be the quality I guess.
I usually spend less than £30 for a pillow but I would be willing to spend up to £100 for a pillow if it truly is that good.
I have done a search online and I really don’t know what brands are trustworthy. A lot of the memory foam pillows I have seen seem to be from companies who sell mattresses like Emma etc
So hit me with your suggestions of brands that are known to make good pillows, preferably memory foam as I have found they seem to be better suited for me as I’m a side sleeper and now that I’m shy of 40, it seems the cheaper pillows just do not suffice.
Thanks.

I did a lot of research into this as I sleep on my side and partially on my front. The pillows good for the side weren’t good for front etc etc.
I bought the simba hybrid but it wasn’t for me. It was too much faff messing around with the foam blocks to get the right pillow - I wanted the firmness but I needed it to be low level for when I’m on my front. With this pillow the firmness only came with more foam blocks which meant a higher pillow.
I eventually bought a buckwheat pillow off Amazon and I love it! It’s quite firm and heavy so if that’s not your thing it might not be for you, but I can mould it around to suit my position and it supports my neck how I want. I just push and pull it as I need. It does make a soft rustling sound as its husks but I don’t mind it and my husband hasn’t complained about the noise. It was also cheaper than all those other fancier pillows.

I used to like continental square pillows and took a chance on these from Dunelm. No going back to regular pillows again and great value too. (https://www.dunelm.com/product/hotel-pack-of-2-luxury-cotton-side-sleeper-continental-pillows-1000289770)

Best ones we got recently were from Costco. I can't recall the name, but they have a black animal paw-print logo on them...

Thank You ...

I decided to try Panda out. They offer a 30 day trial so at least I have the option to return it if it’s no good. Fingers crossed. Thanks.

M&S duck and down filled pillows. Had mine for over thirty years and they wash and tumble dry a dream and become plumped up as new. I wash my pillows at least three times a year, on a 90deg wash. You just can’t do it with memory foam/hollow fibre ones.

I made the mistake of washing a memory foam pillow. After repeated spin cycles, all the water the foam had sucked in remained so I used a rolling pin to squeeze it out then hung it to dry for a week. 😂
Learnt my lesson.

I recently bought some of the M&S ones, too firm for me but will try the medium ones. I have some Vispring ones I liked, have never found a white company one I liked despite the price.
TK Maxx and Dunelm have a good range

I sold pillows professionally for years and by and large I found that price usually correlates to longevity rather than comfort. I've sold and slept on loads of incredibly comfy pillows that only last a season or so.
I'm out of the industry now and these days I just buy the Premier Inn Pillows. Decently comfortable, last an alright length of time, aren't so expensive that you can't replace them every other year.
Technical filling fads seem to come and go but broadly it's synthetic, feather, or wool that comes back around again and again.

Hypnos High Profile Latex Pillow.
Amazing game changer for me, always cheap shitty pillows have neck shoulder issues. Grabbed one these a few months back AMAZING !

Someone on a similar thread recommended Mitre hotel pillows and we’ve not looked back since. They stay firm and bouncy forever, and cost ~£10-20 each depending on which you choose.

I purchased some off a recommendation and they’re not really my cup of tea. They have remained firm and bouncy I’ll give them that, but like I said, just not my cup of tea
So try before you buy or at least have a good idea of what you actually want. I sense what I actually want is a down pillow that compresses rather than these bouncy Mitres

Best pillows I've ever had are the premier inn pillows.

Can I tag on to this question - any recommendations for duvets?
GSV-CargoCult@reddit
Yes! I love my wool room duvet. Had a bit of a sheepy smell for a few weeks but it is so much better at regulating temperature than standard duvets.

Levitex are worth checking out. They're main focus is spine posture so they have a variety of sizing options depending on your size and sleep position.

I have the Simba Hybrid Pillow. It is made up of small foam cubes that you can take out to get your desired firmness. Sometimes I want more firmness so I add the cubes back in. A week later I might want a softer pillow and I'll remove some.

It's personal, noone you can you the best type, but down pillows work the best for me. You say you moved away from them, but what does that mean?
Have you actually tried them, and did you buy down or feather? There is normally a mix, and the more you pay the better the %

I went with an Eve pillow just recently . I've had an Eve mattress for a couple of years and was looking to replace my ancient tempur pillow. Was a bit taken aback when a saw the price so went with Eve for half as much (£70). Still on the expensive side but I'm very happy with it.
It's just down to preference I think at that price range and apparently Eves style is for me.

I really like my Emma, but I like a firm pillow. Really depends on you.

Bedeck I found to be really good

As ridiculous as this sounds, try them out in a bed shop.
They let you try out the beds no problem. The pillows are plastic wrapped so there's no real hygiene issue with you taking one to a bed and giving it a go and seeing how it feels (apart from a bit plasticy obviously!)
