Aviation vacations?
Posted by HabANahDa@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 46 comments
Been an aviation enthusiast all my life. Wanting to do some aviation themed vacations. Where should I go? Museums? Airshow? Airports?
I’m based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Can drive or fly (not a pilot thought). Wanting to keep things budget friends so I can go to many places.
Thanks!!

Oshkosh

For a few days, the busiest airport in the world. Every year.
PowerfulFunny5@reddit
Yeah, and I’m wondering if this year might be even better than normal in conjunction with America250
RogLatimer118@reddit
National Air and Space Museum in DC, also the Udvar-Hazy Center branch and Washington Dulles airport.

USAF Museum Dayton Ohio

I agree! My goodness, that place is huge! I have been there twice and still haven't seen it all. It takes us from the Wright flyer through WW2 to the Cold War to the moon race, to modern aviation. The Valkyre was freaking YUGE and I saw my first nuclear weapon! And it is free!
Dry_Complaint_3569@reddit
You need at least 2 days to give it the justice it deserves.
PutOptions@reddit
You really need to be an aviation nerd -- because there is no other reason to visit -- but the US Air Force Museum in Dayton OH is absolutely amazing. Plan for a whole day.
BoringBob84@reddit
Plan for two days!
lightningzap66@reddit
you can convince everyone you know to go to Sint Maarten and stay at a hotel suspiciously close to the airport
no ulterior motives of course
hesnothere@reddit
Don’t forget to add St Barth. You can hop on an Otter from Grand Case. Hell, throw Saba in.
Beautiful_Jaguar_413@reddit
Take a glider flight. Fun, exciting, quiet (!), and never a worry about engine failure.

I would strongly recommend the D.C. area. You can hit two of the best aviation museums in the country on one trip; The Air and Space Museum in the National Mall, and Udvar-Hazy at Dulles Airport. If you time it right, you can also see the air show at Jount-Base Andrews
escapingdarwin@reddit
And the Blue Angels will have shows: June 20-21: NAS Patuxent River, MD (NAS Patuxent River Airshow)June 27-28: Baltimore, MD (SAIL250 Maryland and Airshow Baltimore)
jackie_daytona-@reddit
And the Museum down at Pax River is itself worth the drive!

There is also a nice spot for plane spotting here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NetRTUmqDkXKXTTs5

Udvar Hazy is a must see

Best in the country imo

Roswell (Formally Reno) Air Races

I just went to Seattle 2 weeks ago mainly to see the Boeing factory and museum of flight. Highly recommend
spyan_@reddit
In my opinion, the best 3 US air museums are:
Smithsonian Udvar Hazy in DC
Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH
Pima in Tucson, AZ
Other notable mentions:
Evergreen in Oregon
Museum of Flight in Seattle
Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA
I'm sure there are others that I have yet to visit.
statikuz@reddit
Seattle area, you can go on the Boeing factory tour and Future of Flight exhibit in Everett and then to the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Difficult_Camel_1119@reddit
and as next step, Airbus in Toulouse or Hamburg (but aeroscopia in Toulouse is not as good as the museum of flight)
also Speyer and Sinsheim in Germany have good aviation-related museums
ericsken@reddit
Speyer and Sinsheim were my holiday last year. They're 2 museums 20 mile from eachother. They have 1 Concorde, 1 Tupolev 144 Concordski, 1 Russian Space a 747 Shuttle amongst other things. You can go in the 4 aircraft I said. I did it in 2 days. I stayd in a hotel. You need a day for Sinsheim and 1 for Speyer. It was for me a 6 hours drive from home. I am going to visit Airbus in Hamburg this year. I recommend it.
spyan_@reddit
I went to Speyer and Sinsheim a few weeks ago. They have some unique stuff! Some of the stuff was unorganized, like a Soviet MIG in with WWII stuff. Both have a collection of trains, cars, planes, etc. Sinsheim is the only place outside of Russia where you can see a Concordski.

We enjoyed the Crankyflier.com event last year, especially the LAX ramp visit. Details for this year’s event here: https://crankyflier.com/dorkfest/

Hands down, Oshkosh!
WelderNo4099@reddit
Hill Airforce Base Museum up the road is surprisingly one of the best in the county.
Other options to consider: Dover, DE Air Mobility Command museum. They have a ton of the big boys on the ramp and docents that are awesome and give you all sorts of cool info and tours of them. Like we had a boom operator take us downstairs in the dc-10 tanker and tell us all how to operate the boom. Dover is an easy trip to combine with Washington DC and Naval Academy in Annapolis.
VibeySwingTrader@reddit
Check out Pima in late February. They do heritage flights across the street( so very low flying F22 and F35 flying alongside P-38s and P-51s.
The Boeing factory tour is fun, combine that with a visit to the museum of flight. And then if you can fly in/out of paine

Saw a YouTuber stay at a twa themed hotel, not cheap but looked interesting https://youtu.be/9UA0Gsd_9Mo?si=85IZHjmkZZpxcbkd
Bounceupandown@reddit
Naval Aviation in Pensacola is probably the best in the world.
UmbertoRobinasBalls@reddit
As someone mentioned, Seattle for the Boeing tour. Probably best big thing you can do while still being budget friendly
A lot of the big events like Farnborough, Paris Air Show and World Aviation Festival will cost ya
TheDrMonocle@reddit
Museums, I'd recommend Pima air and space in Tucson.
Airshows, definitely Oshkosh or Sun n fun. Oshkosh you'd have to plan out a little as it can be pretty expensive if you stay in town and impossible if its short notice. But the night airshow on Wednesday and Saturday are fantastic.

Years ago (20? 25?), I was wandering the boneyard with the kids. Saw some rumply mock-up that looked lije an SR-71. Then I realized it was the real McCoy. Tgst was how I found out the worst-kept secret in aviation had been declassified. I had no idea mortals were allowed to touch one.

Oshkosh has been on my list for years. Just need to save up some dough lol
homerdoh4@reddit
Doing 5 days/4 nights this year. $1700 spent between flight to MKE, car rental, Airbnb (it was cheaper then hotels), and weekly ticket/parking.
HabANahDa@reddit (OP)
Very nicely done! I’ll look into this.
That70sShop@reddit
Falcon Field to see the Confederate Air Force in Mesa Az. Anywhere near Luke AFB in West Phx.
Davis Monthan boneyard in Tucson.
Dry Storage in Goodyear, AZ.
If your flying in, the airport on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is an E-Ticket ride. 8500 ft and a short strip.
There are hot air balloons in North Phoenix.
Sadly, I don't think anyone uses biplanes to crop dust anymore.

Toulouse, to see the belugas
Fine_Contest4414@reddit
I would highly recommend Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. Home of the Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose". There is a massive building of aircraft collections, and another of space exhibits.
HabANahDa@reddit (OP)
Love this! Thanks for the recommendation!

Seconded, came here to say some. Amazing place. A Mecca even.
