I grew up with a very tiny family unit but I remember that year my dad and I randomly decided to go and see that after our lil Christmas dinner. I'll never forget that. It was so much fun. Not just even just the movie but the memory. I miss my parents so much. But it was a lot of fun to see in the theater on Christmas. God he played the perfect asshole, just chefs kiss kind of asshole. We both loved it.
That show was always entertaining. I miss it, but I also know if a show like that existed now, I either wouldn't watch it due to me no longer caring about pop-culture and celebrities, or I wouldn't even know it existed due to the flood of content out there, and it probably wouldn't be as good as it was since everybody is out there doing the same thing in youtube shorts, ig reels, and tik toks. Those were just different times.
Don’t forget Hal Sparks and Aisha Tyler (not my favorite era, but I appreciated them all). Of course Joel McHale made a whole different thing out of it, but I watched every version.
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole with this the other day...
Nowadays I'll log into youtube and there are several channels I follow that post content daily on topics I'm interested in that gives me a sort of curated news roundup.
Youtube didn't come on the scene until 2005 and we didn't really have streaming content prior to that, you had blogs but again they weren't quite fully formed.
Instead cable TV was the primary vector and there was a lovely little tranche of late night shows that brought us this material.
Talk Soup was a daily show that covered various talk shows so you didn't have to. This 100% sounds like a youtube show.
It varies depending on the year but 1999 is pretty flush...
Monday - Thursday you had: Daily Show, Politically Incorrect, Talk Soup, Howard Stern on E!, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Loveline
Between wall those you were up on celebrities, weird news stories, politics, music, etc.
On the weekend side in 1999 you had: Dennis Miller Live, Man Show, Chris Rock Show, Tom Green Show and Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Kind of a fun era that doesn't really exist anymore... curated pop/counter culture content in a nicely presented daily or weekly package designed to be entertaining.
Youtube gets it to us a lot quicker, but it was an enjoyable bridge.
I only vaguely knew the Greg Kinnear era, but I watched this show religiously with John Henson in summer’95. Used to drive my grandmother crazy but it was one of the funniest things I’d seen.
It’s from the McHale era but one that lives rent free in my head was a bit with a video of Oprah hanging from one of those harnesses they use in movies. Joel would throw to it by saying “Now it’s time for our continuing segment, How’s Oprah’s Vajayjay?” and it would cut to the clip of her hanging there and she’d yell “my vajayjay is hurtin!” Then back to Joel in the studio for a “thanks Oprah!” Still makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Does anybody else remember when Gumby couldn’t find Pokey (based on some dude’s Springer show quote), and it was a whole thing! Eventually a year later Gumby found Pokey because fans were so sad.
This is like an early version of Youtube drama or reaction videos. No real OC, just a weak attempt at "commentary" while shamelessly clipping and replaying content from other creators.
I was an attention seeker vampire enthusiast who called up a talk show claiming to be a vampire. A total goof! Ended up going to NYC twice to appear on 2 different shows as a vampire. It was fun but also a little humiliating. We always appeared with the late Stephen Kaplan who actually was intrigued but, he passed after one of our shows. I got old and still tubby lol but not a vampire although I work 3d shift. I think my clip was me saying some nonsenseStephen Kaplan about my teeth lol,

There was a period of time where John Henson was the absolute funniest guy on tv.
And that show was 5 days a week!
Between this and the Craig Kilborn Daily Show… then Howard Stern every night on E!, we didn’t know how good we had it.
