Upgrading to 9950x3d

I’ve had my Ryzen 9 5900X for 6 years and it’s been really good to me but i have an AM5 motherboard sitting in my closet, so an upgrade will have to happen for either this generation or next generation. My workload is a mix of software development (varied requirements), some AI tinkering for fun, and gaming. I don't strictly \~need an upgrade today, but with the current 'acute' CPU shortage im worried about cpu costs going up 200% and it just not going down, obviously no one can predict the future but thoughts would be good
Is it smarter to buy into the 9950X3D now while its not too expensive, or should I until the 10000 series? Any thoughts would be great.

I’ve upgraded from 5950x to 9950x and I’m more than happy! I bet you will be happy with your 9950x3d too :)

One month ago I upgraded from the ryzen 9 5900x, 32gb 3600mhz ram. I upgraded to a ryzen 7 7800x3d, 32gb 6400mhz ram. I upgraded to the 7800x3d because it was cheaper and I heard there was still going to be am5 support for the next Gen cpus. I play on a 1440p 500hz oled. I play esports and lots of AAA games. For esports it was a pretty big upgrade, it feels a lot smoother. As for the AAA games I find its a lot more responsive at max settings with MFG. It was a good upgrade, I play games and stream occasionally. I want to dive deeper into content creation, but I still dont really know lol. I hope this helped in any sort of way, have a nice day everyone

Which AM5 motherboard do you currently have?

gigabyte b650 aorus elite ax ice

If you have enough money, go for it. Otherwise, I suggest saving up more money.

Why did you even buy the motherboard then
Snow_Uk@reddit
is there a cpu shortage ? prices seem to be going down on them in the uk with top tier AMD chips being the cheapest they have been since release
but compared to previous years they are holding value more so normally would have expected them to be £30-50 less at this stage in the life cycle

i mean, you have to factor in the memory cost as well moving to am5, if you don't have any ddr5 lying around already. I'm assuming you would need a decent amount of it given you're workload, maybe 64GB minimum? The price for that is STEEP right now, more than the 9950x3d in fact.

thats true, i was considering getting a single stick of 32 as a starting point and praying the prices go down more, and then getting an extra stick. I havent done a lot of research but fingers are pointing saying that ram isnt going to get better until atleast 2028(which could be completely wrong) but thats what im going off, in the case that ram doesnt change then im not taking that much of a hit.

No it's really not coming down, quite the opposite. In my region it's gone up by another $25 again just the past week.
Super glad i bite the bullet last november and finished my new build when 32GB DDR5 was ONLY $200 and 5080's were available under MSRP. Must have saved myself $600-700 compared to now

2027 early months we should see ram decline back into 150 area

Just buy it now brother man, no point in waiting for the new generation.

This is the first I'm hearing about a CPU shortage. Early rumours suggest Zen 6 should be a pretty big overhaul but its like another year away at least. Honestly given AMD's dominant position (although the Intel refresh has been competitive) I wouldn't be surprised if Zen 6 was overpriced and/or a conservative uplift...
RAM is going to be the bigger issue and could cost as much/more than the CPU these days.

Get the 9950x3d2.

the extra cache for the 2 isnt really worth it for me, not for 40% more money
