Stay out of any hotel hottub and pool. I used to service them when they failed even loose city inspections. It doesnt matter how fancy or nice they are, that water is freaking nasty, their filters are old and dirty and nasty. And their low paid maintenance guys have no idea or time to keep the water levels safe and balanced.
Seriously, stay out of all hotel pools and hot tubs.
ConsciousAge6943@reddit
I have to know- why avoid hotel water? In theory it would just be pulling local municipal water right?
coaaal@reddit
We had a local firefighter catch sepsis(?) from cutting his leg while skiing. He went into the hot tub. Long story short, he lost both legs and an arm. Crazy stuff…
GenChadT@reddit
The last time I used a public hot tub was about 8 years ago. Only got in due to my roommates begging me to come to the apartment complex pool area. Got a nasty rash all up and down my inner thighs that took a couple weeks to subside. Decided then and there, never again with public hot tubs and pools.
Littleshuswap@reddit
Well. Was going to book a fancy hotel for hubby's 50th. Maybe just a nice diner, and then back home!! Thanks for the heads up!
NoTerm3078@reddit
I mean just don't use the hotel hot tub or pool or ice machine. It's fine, don't let this ruin your birthday plans.
puffycloudycloud@reddit
lol don't let this dude ruin your husband's birthday present. if you lived your life by every reddit scare-piece you read then you would never leave the house again, and even that would leave you nervous due to the horror stories of houses randomly blowing up due to undetected gas leaks and what not
Crazy_Law_5730@reddit
Exactly. Most of us are so rarely in a hotel, pool, hot tub, etc, that it doesn’t even matter.
Ice machines can be gross, but are you eating pounds of hotel ice? No? Carry on! If you’re worried, bring a cooler. My husband and I “staycation” occasionally and we pack a cooler with ice and snacks. Not because we’re paranoid, it’s just our thing. But if we need more ice, we get it from the machine unless it seems filthy. It’s fine.
Hotel water (tap water) is usually municipal, so that’s fine. Usually fine unless you don’t like the taste. Bring your own water if you want to.
Bed bugs. They exist. You can check for them easily. But, they’re also usually harmless in small doses. When you get home, wash your clothes immediately and dry on high heat. Heat kills them. They’re quite visible, so inspect your luggage. You can do that outside. Try not to bring them into your home. An indoor / outdoor cat is more likely to bring bed bugs into your home than a hotel stay.
It’s a ton of fear mongering.
KeyCold7216@reddit
Another thing, if you live in a decently hot region and its summer you can keep your luggage in your car for a few days and it should get hot enough to kill everything. Then, taken it inside, immediately run it through the dryer first on high heat, then wash and dry again. They will have no chance of surviving.
I did this after staying in a roach infested Air bnb. I found a few dead roaches in the dryer, but never found any live ones.
No_Possible_7108@reddit
Their husband has cancer and is immuno-compromised so in this case I'd say in this particular case at least, the fear is pretty justified
Littleshuswap@reddit
Unfortunately my spouse has cancer and is immune compromised, so learning these things kind of help us.
No_Possible_7108@reddit
Definitely a case of "better safe than sorry" in this situation!
I hope your spouse is able to recover well. Fuck cancer
Littleshuswap@reddit
Thank you so much!! 😊
FuzzzyRam@reddit
You're not going to die from legionnaires, you're going to drink 'gross' water and be stronger for it.
Littleshuswap@reddit
Not if you've got cancer and are already immuno-compromised...
Independent-Bug-9352@reddit
Just don't even go to Vegas.

As a former CPO (that actually gave a shit) he speaks the truth. If you smell the pool chlorine when no one is in it, it’s not chlorine, it’s 💩, pee, and body oils combined with chlorine, and the pool is not clean.
Melinoe2016@reddit
Uhh have you ever smelled chlorine by itself? It definitely smells. This comment is as goofy as believing in the color changing water due to urine.
Ok_Aside8490@reddit
Chloramines
indoor air quality with combined chlorines (chloramines)
Bet
Melinoe2016@reddit
No where in any of those links does it say Chlorine by itself doesn’t smell. Go ahead and open a container of chlorine and take a big whiff, pal.
Ok_Aside8490@reddit
Brother nowhere in my comments do I say chlorine itself doesn’t smell like chlorine. You legit can’t read
Melinoe2016@reddit
“If you smell chlorine when no one is in it, it’s not chlorine”. That is definitely implying that chlorine doesn’t smell on its own. You can definitely smell chlorine by itself. Often very strong. Sure adding sweat and urine changes the smell but your original statement is all kinds of wrong.
bleebolgoop@reddit
Hotel water is city water, you’re fine drinking it unless you’re in an area with bad public water supply. The rest, yea, agreed.
bethkatez@reddit
thanks you just gave me extra hotel anxiety, but I appreciate your honesty

Prob the hot tubs
sporkk1@reddit
even a brand new hot tub can have nasty stuff in the pipes. I used to read a few forums on spa care. The water chemistry guys said they wet test at the factory and the left over water in the pipes can build up chlorine resistant bio film.
I don't recall where but there was some sort of spa show where they would refill and not use chlorine or clean the jets and it made people sick just from walking in the area. even though the water looked clean.
Tradtrade@reddit
Its usually showers where the delivery head is a long way from the water heater. The water isn’t hot enough but it’s just warm enough for them to thrive then get areosolised into little droplets you breathe in
Liminal_Aspect@reddit
Air conditioning systems and cooling towers for large systems - ironically yet another way data centers can harm communities, no joke. Outbreaks caused by all the evaporative cooling towers making the bacterium very comfy and aerosolizing it over town...
Salty-Passenger-4801@reddit
Hmm. Didn't know that was possible if it was hot enough at the source. Scary.
AppropriateCattle69@reddit
I’m staying at a hotel tonight. I think I’ll just shower when I get home.
Tradtrade@reddit
FYI hospitals were the worst when I worked in testing
Salty-Passenger-4801@reddit
Lol
I did find this on a website to help prevent infection
Run water upon arrival One helpful measure is to run all taps and showers on high heat for several minutes after checking in. This flushes out any stagnant water that has gathered in the pipes, lowering the danger of exposure to bacteria that may have formed there.
Avoid high-risk areas in hotels If you’re concerned about waterborne infections, minimize your time in hotel hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms, as these humid environments are ideal for Legionella to grow. If the hotel has publicly displayed its safety procedures and water treatment schedules, you may feel more at ease using these services, but bypassing them entirely is a simple approach to minimize any potential risk.
mhummel@reddit
It's also useful for exposing any secret messages on mirrors that someone might have written with their fingers ;)
Nolsoth@reddit
Holy shit that's not a good situation to be in.
Legionella is fucking deadly.
Someone's fucked up big time for that to be active.
goog1e@reddit
I was gonna say many more buildings are legionella-positive than people think, bit actual cases are rare.... But they actually have two confirmed cases already!!! Wtf!
I've known several places that tested positive for the bacteria, but never heard of people actually getting sick. That's fucked.
Scarecrowithamedal@reddit
Veterans Retirement Home, Marshalltown Iowa got to at least 74 confirmed cases as of September '26

hysys_whisperer@reddit
Yeah, you basically have to be either old as fuck or immunocompromised PLUS have huffed cooling tower drift mist to get it.
The death rates are really high if you do get it though, because catching it has already weeded out anyone even slightly healthy from the pool of potential survivors vs deaths.
evermorecoffee@reddit
I suspect your second paragraph doesn’t apply anymore post-2020 and especially with the resurgence of preventable diseases like measles. Measles wipes your immune system’s memory after all…
I bet we’re about to see more “healthy” people get sick from Legionnaires over the next couple of years, thanks to this fun new trick… 😅
JudgmentUnited5297@reddit
It's not a full wipe like measles, but repeated Covid or a long covid infection can set you back pretty far.
camojorts@reddit
Oh damn
JudgmentUnited5297@reddit
With a top-heavy population and a growing number of people with new immune deficiencies popping up, it's hardly a minority at risk these days.
goog1e@reddit
Yeah a ton of offices had to mitigate it near me. People were flipping out because it seemed like an outbreak or something.... No. The state had just started to mandate testing. When you test for it you find it. It had been there the whole time, with zero people sick.
FuzzzyRam@reddit
I hope no one takes from this that the testing was bad. ("If we stop testing, we'd have fewer cases, if any...") It's really good to know it's there before some old person comes and gets it and dies mysteriously on your watch.
hysys_whisperer@reddit
FTFY, it is a gnarly illness if you get it.
Big_Cryptographer_16@reddit
This is how I learned what it was long ago. They shit down my high school for a few days when tests confirmed it. Nobody got sick. We just got school off.
Nolsoth@reddit
You can catch it from hot water cylinders, it's why hot water must be heated to 60 Celcius as the bacteria can't survive at those temps.
Can also pick it up in compost.
It's a nasty little fucker.
Nolsoth@reddit
That's a major fuckup somewhere.
lordofsurf@reddit
Yeah, because they keep cutting staff and cutting corners. My parents both work hospitality in LV for 20 years.

Occams razor....not everything is a Hollywood level conspiracy.
Whats more likely....A person weaponized legionnares disease and released it after being arrested.....or a hotel cutting corners on maintenance?
big_stipd_idiot@reddit
I'd be very surprised if those two biolabs, run by the same guy, aren't part of a larger operation. I also think it's logical that if someone wanted to spread a disease they'd try to make it seem explainable in a way like you just did. But, since legionnaire's is not transmissible between people it would make a pretty bad choice to use for an attack. That being said, the largest biological attack in US history was from people intentionally spreading salmonella at restaurant salad bars, so there is precedent for such a thing, though there was a much larger impact and a clear motive in that case. So no, I don't think this is from a lab but I also think those labs should be pretty concerning. They aren't here for no reason.
Good_Isopod_2357@reddit
That was my first thought!!!
The_ME_Brews@reddit
This has happened at other Las Vegas area hotels over the past few years.
The biggest recently was South Point hotel & casino last year, I think on multiple occasions it exceeded 5 people.

I saw the OP after reading this on Threads microdose news.. "...Relman is not alone in this experience; NYT has transcripts of other problematic chats about bioweapons with other chatbots. We are told that the likelihood of an AI-built bioweapons attack is very small, but it is noted that “even one attack” could be “catastrophic.” "
