I had an 80's Panasonic stereo hooked up to my audio out. It had 12" deep bas booming speakers. I played doom over dialup with a friend and the shotgun sound raddle mom kicknacks on the shelves.
I used the stereo's input for my computer speakers. I remember I had to get a special cable tiny cable for my CD-ROM drive so I could listen to music on my computer.
I was assuming the poster meant the headphone jack out of the cdrom to aux in on his stereo.
On that little cable - we Not for a while. In the pre 8x era you needed that cable. When adaptec finally came out with the audio over the ide driver it was great to get rid of it.
Born in 80 here. I never had my own computer until I went to college. Our first computer was in a den in the house. Great times playing where in the world is Carmen San Diego. Then we moved, had a slightly bigger house, the guest bedroom doubled as a "computer room."
The only kids I knew lucky enough to have their own set up were only children.
Had the same computer but we bought a bigger monitor. Dad would be posted there late nights with his cigarettes and coffee. I remember being there at night on AIM. What a time to be alive.
Sometimes I have a hard time believing how much time has passed. I guess that's on me, for not putting enough life into my years to where the distance could be felt better.Â
If you had this in the 90s, you were rich. DVDs just started to come out in the late 90s & they were expensive. Even in the mid 2000s, 1 box set of DVDs would run $100. Way more expensive than any kid could afford. My guess is the picture is from the early to mid 2000s.
Good nostalgia, but all of this fits on my phone now. All I see is wasted space. That’s a lot to clean, too. I don’t really miss this. So many batteries!
That looks like it was in a bedroom which the computer I had growing up certainly wasn't in my room. We had a family computer that was set up on a computer desk in the living room. It wasn't until college that I had my own computer.
It's wild how pretty much all of us had the exact same desk setup as this. We didn't have social media, we didn't have any way to know how everyone else had their desks set up, and yet this is what all of us ended up putting together.
The rat's nest of power cords under your feet, the stereo CD player, the cordless phone, the stacks of empty CD-R spindles, the mug full of writing utensils, the flatbed scanner with shit piled on top of it so you can't use it... pretty much every one decided, on our own, that this is peak computer desk configuration.
I can't even describe how much comfort and goodness that picture makes me feel. I was a loner as a kid. Was picked on, and getting home from school was literally the best part of my day, because I was finally safe and away from the a-holes. I used to have a setup just like this. I would go online, watch movies, listen to music, and just get lost in my own safe world. It was even right next to my bed, too, just like this, which made it feel extra good.
I only knew an old ass folding banquet table that was set up with a metal folding chair and the monitor and computer just randomly set up on top. This is some fancy rich kid shit.

Make some room for a plate of bagel bites! I want to go to there!

The hell we did! Some rich kids in here...

I mean, this is nostalgic and all, but I think I'll take the setup I have now over this, lol.

What special cable? That came included with every CD drive back then.

Compaq Presario for those of us that couldn't afford a Dell.

I had a few Dells in my day. Never realized that Compaq was Temu Dell.

Or wouldn't. Dell STILL uses proprietary components.

Activate Turbo Button, 33mhz to 50mhz engaged.

I had that desk setup but without the stuff. It took until 1996 until we bought our first PC. I'd been playing and coding on an Amiga 500.

I wish. That computer would have cost $4000 probably

So circa like 2002 I got into EverQuest, like a lot. I worked as a hardware tech and was able to, um, procure a lot of hardware.
I had this exact desk with 3 monitors and 4 CPUs running on it. Man I multiboxed like a champ
