I made DIY race scales for 80$!

I used esp32 lites, hx711's and some load cells to make my own race/weight scales for vehicles. It only cost like 80$! It works on any phone/tablet or computer.
Code is all opensource on my github and how to video is on youtube
They came out awesome!!

For anyone wondering how to properly promote a YT on this sub, this is a great example.

Awesome!

This is awesome. We need more open source in the car scene. Thank you for sharing!

Oh...you will love the rest my channel. Plenty of open source

This is one of the dopest things I’ve seen in awhile.
Appreciate the work and share man!
Amesb34r@reddit
I have no idea why I would need this but it’s amazing and I commend you for doing it.

This is used to weigh a car which is valuable but.......more importantly also to corner balance it. Think alignment on steroids. A corner balanced car will handle night and day better than one that isnt

This is an amazing project might tackle this

Thanks and you can do it!

Out of all of the tools and electronics I've diy'd for cheap, for some reason scales never crossed my mind. Brilliant idea, I'll absolutely be researching and building a set. Thanks for sharing!
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Absolutely. So sick of the cornered market on race scales and other car electronics. Its easier than most think to DIY and I want to get the word out
SprungMS@reddit
I really appreciate it. I’m always building some shit like this, but wouldn’t have thought of it for scales.
Of all the expensive heavy equipment I’ve got at home for performance automotive work… scales are something I’ve had wishlisted for years but can never justify the expense. This takes care of that lol.
I know sensors are sensors and it’s all in the way the data is used (and as long as they’re precise, corner weighting shouldn’t be difficult anyway)… but how accurate do you find these? Any comparison data you have to ensure it’s as reliable as expensive commercial scales?
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Very accurate. Within 1%. I weighed my car with race scales(a few years ago), at a truck weighing station where the scales legally have to be within 40lbs when calibrated, with bathroom scales and with now with this.
I verified with the truck scale as it is the actually the most accurate and it is within 1%. Not sure which one is more right though 😄 .
You can see at the end of the video, that I weigh the car and then get in to verify the weight changes appropriately with my body weight. It changed within 2lbs(it added 199lbs and I weigh 202). Its dead nuts accurate if you calibrate it correctly and its quick and easy to do.

I appreciate this video as I was just scowling about how expensive scales are. I'll be watching your whole video and probably building these as well.
I know how much that viewer retention matters! 😂
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Thanks! And I think this can help quite a few
EEpromChip@reddit
I literally just watched that video. Saw a set pop up on FB Marketplace and was thinking if they could be made. And then your video popped up.
Thanks a lot. I already have 3 car projects and a ton of spring / summer shit to do... Now I have yet another project...
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Great! Glad to help.
It's not a large undertaking and should only be like a few hours to build tops btw once you have the parts
preruntumbler@reddit
I love shit like this. Well done!

Saved for later. This right here is why I still love the Internet and the open source community
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Trying to grow the community as I long for the days of help/growth with builds and not who has the best paint job or most power.

You're awesome. I'm not in a place to use this right now but it's saved for when I am 🤙
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Thanks and glad to help. My entire channel is building useful car stuff for cheap
AngryScottish@reddit
Neat, but... Find a local scca region and almost all of them have scales they loan out for free.
travis_cea@reddit (OP)
Some here do do that. However, it's near impossible to get them as they are always "loaned out"
Furthermore, you are at the mercy of how people have treated/calibrated those scales.
