In David Allen Coe’s song “You Never Even Called Me By My Name”, at the end he says that the songwriter claimed it was the best country song ever written, to which DAC replied it cannot be because it doesn’t involve:
Prison
Trains
His mother
A pickup truck
And maybe a couple other things (I forget)
So the final verse of the song goes something like “I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison, it was raining when I went to pick her up in my pickup truck, she ended up getting hit by a fucking train lmao” or something along those lines.
It’s haven’t heard the song since I was in my early twenties, so sorry if my details are slightly off.
You get the gist though
CroutonSouffle@reddit
Little known fact, it was actually written by Steve Goodman and John Prine but John didn’t want to be associated with the song when they wrote it so all credit is given solely to Steve Goodman.
badgerandaccessories@reddit
John came up with the “you don’t have to call me darlin, darlin”
Otherwise it’s all Goodman. He hats why he didnt take credit
MuppetFucker2077@reddit
>Otherwise it’s all Goodman
internetlad@reddit
Confirmed John Prine can't finger gun
YorkPorkWasTaken@reddit
Between the two of them, they also wrote "City of New Orleans" and "In Spite of Ourselves", which also rank among the greatest country and western songs
Frosty7130@reddit
John Prine and Steve Goodman wrote the song together while heavily intoxicated, which is why Prine refused credit. Goodman bought him a jukebox from his royalties as a gift.
spacemanaut@reddit
This song whips absolute ass, thanks for introducing me to it
Sithlordandsavior@reddit
Ya know what's weird, my dad sent me this song earlier today and it's such an obscure thing to have seen twice in a day.
sports_sports_sports@reddit
Probably because he died yesterday
Natsoii@reddit
Great song, it’s in my one of my top playlists
Daryl_On_FFXIV@reddit
Absolute banger of a song
cha_boi_john120@reddit
Unironically made the song the perfect country western song. The break back into the song after that verse is unrelentingly good.
calmerthanudude@reddit
Bro breaking that song out at karaoke night in Tennessee is ELECTRIC
lovelycosmos@reddit
Reaper781@reddit
Greatest country song ever written.

Or "Lay me down some rails", which includes the line "[HARD-R]s made me vote for segregation, and cocaine makes me hard as a rock"
Dapoopers@reddit
I heard that Shel Silverstein was somehow involved with him recording some of these.
redgeck0@reddit
I actually had these on an mp3 player in elementary school, my dad set it up for me. Even Ninja (not actually ninja) Fucker

I’m grateful that I was able to rock out to his greatest hits because I was reminded of him by this post. RIP

Wow. That's a crazy crazy coincidence. I'm actually stunned. Rest in peace DAC. It's time to hear your name 🤟🏼
Squeeblz88@reddit
The number of children here with no knowledge of the GREATEST country and western song ever written is wild.
Icy_Magician_9372@reddit
I'm not a child I just find country music to be universally shit.
Squeeblz88@reddit
And reference to children here isn't based on musical taste. The song came out in '75. I presume it to be outside of the cultural zeitgeist of the zoomers running around on Reddit now.
Icy_Magician_9372@reddit
I'm just saying that someone who thinks the genre sucks probably won't be very tapped into anything in that genre regardless of their generation.
Squeeblz88@reddit
I guess. I don't care much for country either, but it's a pretty genre transcendent song based on who sang it. Then again, that's just my opinion and I won't begrudge you yours.
Cerindipity@reddit
It's outside the zeitgeist of 40 year olds, unc.
Squeeblz88@reddit
Now you listen here, whippersnapper.... 🤣
YohanCapichelli@reddit (OP)
Make it seem so useless to remain tbh
Finna-Jork-It@reddit
County jail is not prison btw
aaronwashere01@reddit
Downvoted but the lyrics specifically say bros mom was in prison

So as you can see, the last verse goes like this here
ElephantEarwax@reddit
He's drunk. Drunk driving isn't smart, especially when you're going to cop HQ. This isn't hard context guys.
Ubblebungus@reddit
from the context clues in the comments, its about (supposedly) the greatest country song.
soiboi64@reddit
It sounds like the perfect country and western song. maybe it needs another verse. Obligatory:https://youtu.be/a837vwqJL8A?si=bN83Cap_uR2Xf1fk
