Today at the gas pump

I realized that I am so old, I remember when "Regular" gas meant "Leaded". And I still have the instinct to avoid the "Regular" (don't want that lead)!

How much did you pay today?
Sparklebright7@reddit (OP)
4.40

I remember 39.9 cents/gallon gasoline and for the kiddies, it smelled fantastic...

I freaked out when they talked of doing away w/leaded gas! All my vehicles were old, and required lead. I envisioned having to install new valve seats in my beaters.
Bender077@reddit
I remember ‘’yellow gas’’ and ‘’red gas’’.

The U.S. still dyes off road fuel red to signify it I’d not for use in on road vehicles and that it is subject to different requirements. Aviation gasoline can still be leaded and is not intended for on road vehicle use. The red dye allows for enforcement against use of off-road fuels in highway vehicles.

The amount of lead in "100 octane Low-Lead" (100LL) is higher than was ever included in gasoline intended for cars...

We still say "fill it with unleaded" when telling someone else (like our adult offspring) to fill our car. Or in Oregon, before they (finally) got self serve.

I was still asking them to "fill it with regular" into my late 30s early 40s....I don't think there had been lead in gas in a decade or two 😆

I'm trying to avoid Regular too. But I have to drive to work. $4.29 today.
Old_Goat_Ninja@reddit
I have to go to the gas pump after work. Just looked at prices, it’s over $7 a gallon (premium). Sigh.

Anybody remember the little plastic hose adapters that would allow you to put leaded in your unleased fuel only tank?
Skatchbro@reddit
Hence the joke in the Blues Brothers- “ It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas.”

Love it!

Thanks for making me feel it. I read your post and thought that can’t be right. I went to the wayback machine in my head and remembered it was “regular or unleaded”.
Len_Zefflin@reddit
Where is leaded gas sold? Canada got rid of it in 1989.

I'm so old, I remember saying "Fill it up with Ethyl!"
JoeMagnifico@reddit
Yep...we had a early 60s Buick LeSabre that drank the Ethyl.
BAHGate@reddit
Lead is a lubricant. Engines designed for leaded gas will eventually fail using unleaded gas.
InevitableStruggle@reddit
I remember putting lead additive in my gas tank
NapoleonBlownapart9@reddit
“Gets rid of engine-knock and IQ points?”

Today's has prices

Oh hey, this is from the gas crisis last time we had a stupid fucking nepo baby running the country!

In our lifetimes, all gas was leaded until the early 1970s. The difference between regular and premium was the octane number.
Cars that take unleaded have a restricted opening in the filler that's too small to fit a (wider) leaded nozzle or an (even-wider) diesel nozzle.
