That seriously looks like the dinners we had every night in the 80's. I'm so used to it now I think it looks percent fine. It's I hadn't grown up in the 70 and 80s I would think it's terrible I guess
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
Goulash is delicious
OGTalle@reddit
Yeah that's not goulash tho
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
What do you think goulash is?
OGTalle@reddit
Something without macaroni in it to start with
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
No definitely have to add some pasta. That’s how I’ve always seen it made.
OGTalle@reddit
I just found out American Goulash is a thing, hence the confusion.
Why would you call that goulash? It doesn't resemble the real thing at all?
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
American goulash is real goulash
unclejoe1917@reddit
Real shitty goulash.
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
Let’s see your goulash uncle joe
unclejoe1917@reddit
I'm making some tomorrow actually.
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
Cool, be sure to add some pasta
unclejoe1917@reddit
I'm making real Hungarian goulash, not marzetti.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
You’re arguing with “America bad” people who don’t know food history
OGTalle@reddit
That's the end of this discussion 😂😂😂
CoconutxKitten@reddit
Hungarian immigrants created it a long time ago, likely using what they had regular access too
People blaming it on modern Americans are silly. Sometimes immigrants made twists on their original cuisine based on availability of ingredients
OGTalle@reddit
There are many Americanized dishes that are amazing. It is a beautiful thing if dishes get adopted to a different culture.
However... it is obviously super confusing just referring to whatever this is as 'goulash'. The only resemblance is the use of smoked paprika? There's different starch, meat, veggies, preparation method, it's just a completely different dish.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
My point is that this was what Hungarian immigrant brought a good chunk of time ago & that’s what it’s called
This is the version of goulash that got introduced to America by Hungarians so long ago
RedLicorice83@reddit
I think the issue is that it neither looks nor tastes like Hungarian goulash, and most of us had elementary school lunch versions of this which is bland and greasy.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
I mean, okay? That doesn’t change the origins though. It was made BY Hungarians who had come over here for who know what reason.
RedLicorice83@reddit
I'm not arguing with you... I'm trying to help you af the people shitting on it understand why so many are shitting on it. The altered-by-Hungarians version has been literally watered down even further. Why are you so defensive that you're being rude to people siding with you?
OGBRedditThrowaway@reddit
Because Americans are incapable of not butchering culinary naming conventions.
Like renaming ditalini to "salad macaroni". Or adding garlic to mayonnaise and calling it aioli. Or butchering the meaning of the word picante. Or taking the word for peppers in Italian and using it to rename a sausage that already had a name. Or gorditas and chalupas and tacos.
The list is endless really.
lia-delrey@reddit
Well i respect all of us humans for drenching potatoes in mayonnaise and call it a salad with a straight face
Next-Drink8593@reddit
This is the most amazing comment I’ve heard all day.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
It was made by Hungarian immigrants 🙄
Ok-Worry-8931@reddit
Tbf every country loves to butcher other culture’s foods. Indians will throw on kebabs and spices, East Asians will somehow add in rice and raw eggs, etc.
