Is the Ryzen 7 5700x a good pick for gaming?

Hello everyone, I want to upgrade my CPU and was wondering if the 5700x was a solid choice for gaming. I currently have an i5 9400f paired up with a RX 9070xt and the bottleneck is driving me insane.
I am well aware that it's brother, the 5700x3D, performs better in gaming but it's very tricky to find in my country. We don't have anything even close to microcenter around here, and it's been out of stock in places like Amazon for many months now. Is the 5700x going to be enough? I think it's the best AM4 processor I can go for with my budget.
No_Guarantee7841@reddit
Nope, its not going to be enough for a 9070xt. Unless you are gonna game at 4k native or avoid every cpu bound game.

Would a ryzen 5 5500x3d be enough? Or a better choice, at least. That's pretty much my only other option, any other CPUs are either AM5 or chronically out of stock.

Was in the same boat as you. I wanted to keep my AM4 until AM6 releases in the future. Upgraded my RX 6700XT to a RX 9070 XT and my Ryzen 5 5600 to the Ryzen 7 5700X. The 5800X is slightly „better“, but way less efficient. Same for the 5800XT.
A X3D would be the best buy, but they’re way too expensive in my country (Germany). You can buy them for 300-400€ and even more. No ty. Maybe they get a restock at some point. I highly doubt it though.
Yes, the CPU may bottleneck you at some point, depending on your games, but you’re good to go keeping AM4, considering the RAM prices.
Let’s pray when AM6 releases RAM prices will go down as they used to do. Then we can upgrade the MB, CPU and RAM and still have a fuckin‘ fast GPU.
Just my two tuesday cents.

Thank you for your answer! I managed to find the 5500X3D at a pretty good price, so I ended up choosing that one. I'm currently waiting on it's arrival, and I feel pretty confident about this decision. :)
timewizard23@reddit
Jealous af right now. Maybe I’ll gift it myself to Christmas this year, it’s sooooo good. Have fun, man! Great choice 😊
BitRunner64@reddit
It's gonna be a decent upgrade from a 9400F but you'll still have a bit of a CPU bottleneck.
If you can find a 5500X3D that might be one option. Or if you can save up a bit and get an AM5 platform with a Ryzen 7600 or similar that would be more future proof.
TrinityYGO@reddit
The 5500x3D isn’t that much better than the 7 5700x
They are pretty much on par.
The 5700x3D and up destroys the 5700x tho
gross2mess@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your answer! I've just looked them up, and it seems that the 5500x3D has been restocked in a bunch of stores. Cheaper than the 7500x as well.
And the main reason why I'm upgrading to AM4 is due to ram prices. I just can't afford DDR5 ram in any way, the prices aren't going down in my country and it doesn't seem that's going to change soon. I'm thinking about skipping AM5 completely and upgrading directly to AM6 when it launches, some day.

A 5700x is fine for the immediate future if you don't have the budget for an AM5 system but I'm not sure the latest GPU's are a good fit for it. In the end it is a 4 year old CPU that's probably best paired with a 3060 (12GB) or a 3070 variant. I use a RX 6750xt and it works very well with that.
2raysdiver@reddit
What games do you play? Have you tried turning on frame generation?
The 5700x is fine for gaming, but it isn't much better than a 5600x. Either is a significant increase over the i5-9400F, though. You can often find a 5800XT on sale for not much more than a 5600X or XT and it offers about a 5% improvement over the 5600X in single threaded performance.

5800x3d is being re-released in the next few months supposedly...might be worth the wait. If anything, it will shake up the prices a bit for am4
TheOmegaFalcon@reddit
Far too expensive, it's not worth those money
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
We dont know the price yet...it wil drop down the second hand market for sure
TheOmegaFalcon@reddit
cmon dude. it's gonna cost a lot
VTXT@reddit
5800x3d comeback? where did u get that news from?

SmokBarrage@reddit
what about the prices on something like a 14400f?
whichever is cheaper between the 14400f/14600k or 5700x will be fine
No_Guarantee7841@reddit
If you are planning on using ddr4 then those cpus arent gonna be much faster than ryzen 5xxx non-x3d.
SmokBarrage@reddit
Yea that's why I said whatever is cheaper between them.
If their market swings towards Intel being cheaper its worth considering
outlander999@reddit
5700x is decent, but you could be CPU limited in heavy CPU games (Space Marine 2, for example)
ZVyhVrtsfgzfs@reddit
Why AM4? It had a great run and was a legendary socket but we are at the end of that run.
AM5 would deliver more future flexibility and performace now.
gross2mess@reddit (OP)
I can't afford DDR5, and ram prices aren't going down in my country. Buying two sticks of ram would cost almost as much as the CPU alone, and it doesn't seem like that's going to change until next year, if that.
ZVyhVrtsfgzfs@reddit
Tracking, I dont think the AI bubble will make it to next year, but none really knows and that does you mo good now.
I bough 32GB of ddr5 in early 2025 for $94, it is over $400 right now.
Zee-Bln@reddit
But he has DDR 4 ram and ram is expensive these days. I get him though.
Plenty_Article11@reddit
No, move to a used AM5 system, or get an i7 9700 imported.
Since you already have DDR4 the cheapest thing to do is move to 12600K or better Intel system. (Used 12600K or KF are around $130 used, Motherboards are $50-80 good used). If any more than that go toward a Ryzen 7500F or 7600 system.
IrrelevantTale@reddit
No I had an i7 9700k its lack of hyperthread cause microstutters on windows 11 while gaming. Has to at least be a i7 9900k to avoid those.
Plenty_Article11@reddit
I'd just as soon use a QTJ1 (10980HK ES) or QTJ0 for half that. If you can do the BIOS mods, but it's pretty easy with Coffeetime utility. And you need a B365 or a Z370, won't work on the B360 or Z390
maniacalmayh3m@reddit
Are you gaming at 1080p? Mind you it’s more complicated than that because every game is different but I highly recommend going to 1440p. Your GPU is more than capable to doing anything you want at 1440p on that side of things.
In GPU intensive titles you would see less than a 10% fps increase if you jumped to a 5700x in titles like Cyberpunk at 1440p because at higher resolution games become much more GPU bound.
IrrelevantTale@reddit
A 5800xt is also a good choice if its available in your area. Otherwise 5500x3d and up is your best bet.
Key-Regular674@reddit
I game in 4k with a 5700x and a 5070. 100fps in every game no issues. Cpu is the bottleneck but it works great.
jhaluska@reddit
I think of it as basically middle of the pack performer. Neither good nor bad. But if you don't have PC3200/PC3600 memory you will be losing some performance
ReasonableNetwork255@reddit
itl be fine .. even a 5600 will .. gpu will be FAR more important to gaming performanve .. a higher end fancy cpu can 'add' alittle performance, but it is not like its sold on typical forums - that you 'need' a fancy cpu for games to work right .. thats hogwash .. if the cpu supports pcie4 and its fairly fast itl work just dandy .. you wont 'fix' a lower end gpu to be a rocket with a cpu though .. ever .. get a good gpu if you want gaming performance, waaay more important ..
RuralBoy1@reddit
If you are gaming mostly its more than enough the extra cores are meant for Streaming and heavy tasks.but if you looking for something just for gaming on an Am4 platform price to performance you can get the ryzen 5 5600x ..the X3d chips only buy if your wallet allows
Urdnot_Flexx@reddit
5700x is fine if that’s all you have. There shouldn’t be much bottle necks, although it could come up at some point.
