I’d make sure the cushions are completely dry, then try storing them somewhere breathable and well-ventilated, vacuum bags might be okay short-term if they’re fully dry, but a ventilated garden storage box could be a safer bet to help avoid mould.

We bought a Keter 2020L storage box from Costco, had room to spare so built a little bench for more storage. If you go this route keep an eye out for Costco discounts as we got ours for about 30% less than RRP.

Some go in a large purpose built waterproof box container, some go in the basement.
TulipTatsyrup@reddit
Where in the UK are you living with a basement?
bars_and_plates@reddit
Loads of places have them, every Victorian terrace I've been in has at least a small one, some are the entire floor print of the house.
Having said that most of mine are a bit humid so I wouldn't want to put anything fabric down there.
katielikesthings@reddit
Our whole street are victorian terraces and majority have basements/cellars/old coal stores many of which have been converted into living space.
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Good question!
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Do you have any issues with mold storing them in the waterproof box container?
dbxp@reddit
Why not stick one of those moisture absorbers in with them? https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/simply-everyday-scented-interior-dehumidifiers-4pk-fresh-linen-391837
TheEnglishNorwegian@reddit
None so far, just don't put them away damp. If you end up getting them wet bring them inside to dry out a bit first.
2c0@reddit
I store them in the shop because I would never remember to take them off / put them on. The wooden picnic bench I have is just fine.
Historical_Project86@reddit
We have a thingy we bought from IKEA, a wheeled fabric storage thing.

Seems like you are destined for the Selfstore place and pay the monthly rent 🫤
Exotic-Astronaut6662@reddit
We left ours out this year, apart from a bit of green on the edges they are fine. The did get blown around the garden a bit though.

Husband altered our spare room cupboard that was already storage to fit the covers as our garden furniture too was more expensive than our indoor furniture. We're moving this year and looking at buying a storage box and getting a cover made as the cover we bought to go with it is ripped and was a bit tight but the next size up was way too big
Just_A_some1@reddit
My dad built a large wooden box, lined with a heavy duty tarp. We called it the nuclear box bc the lid was so heavy 😂 it worked great for about a year, but then it leaked. Just any large waterproof box would work, or if you want less obvious storage then perhaps some sort of vacuum sealed bags tucked away inside?
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Vacuum bags sounds like a pretty good idea. I wonder if they sell them big enough for the cushions.
GilraedElensar@reddit
Careful with this! I tried this and the foam inside never recovered. I saw if you steam them they do recover, it’s a lie, they looked plum for 5 minutes and then went back to flat waste
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Thank you! That is really helpful.
Just_A_some1@reddit
They make them big enough for folded duvets or fat blankets, I’m sure some will fit

In this house, the full set goes in the garage for winter and the cushions are supposed to go there overnight in summer but they tend to get dumped in the utility room, currently got a perfect slot for them next to the washer dryer but that will all be built in cabinets soon. In the last house the set stayed outside under waterproof covers and the cushions were stored in the conservatory (bought a hat stand that was perfect for storing them, similar to this one https://share.google/k43wvHORvL8bXY9eR )
SwordTaster@reddit
Dad made a waterproof decorative box for them. That the cat uses to sleep on
Nomis1982@reddit
Conservatory. Barely gets used during winter anyway.
Appreciate this is rather difficult if you don't have a conservatory.
Complex_Adagio7058@reddit
We bought some aftermarket custom waterproof covers which were miles better than the originals, and just left the cushions on the furniture over winter (under the covers obvs). No problems with damp or mould at all.
taimur1128@reddit
Vacuum storage bag and hidden in the closet/ottoman storage.
BadFangio@reddit
Get a plastic storage bin. I got a Kettler (?) does the job.
Fir3Starter91@reddit
We got a HUGE zip up bag specifically for outdoor furniture cushions, I think we made the mistake of putting a few away wet/damp so there was some mould, but the other stuff was fine.
Appropriate-Rate-336@reddit
We have an inside wooden play house we chuck them in!
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
That sounds like a good use of space!
Appropriate-Rate-336@reddit
The kids have used it all of three times lol. It is starting to rot now so failing that the garage. When it rains over summer I tend to just bring them inside.
misterygus@reddit
I use a big plastic garden storage box (twin wheely bin sized) I bought from the diy store. Never had any mold issues. Spiders yes, but not mold.
NannyOggLancre@reddit
Same here. I spray with peppermint and lemon infused water, in spring to discourage the spiders before I need to access the cushions. I have little shelve to store the cushions in so they aren’t on the floor.
ScallyGirl@reddit
We use a furniture cover for our garden furniture and have never had an issue with mold. Just dont get a cheap one. We paid around £100 for our cover (it was the specific one for the set), we spent a lot more than that on the furniture so why cheap out on the cover!
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Ahh; they didn't advise us of a cover. I bought a cover that is meant to be water proof; and having left it over winter, it was bone dry when we took the cover off. It just doesn't cover the feet. I am assuming that if it covers the cushions too, the cushions should be fine? Just hoping it doesn't cause mold, for when the rain dries up underneath.
ScallyGirl@reddit
Covers everything. If we tuck everything in together, we can left the legs up and tuck the cover under, this helps more to stop the bloody thing blowing off when it is windy, but will also protect the feet.
Google the brand and you may find they do one for your set.
aspannerdarkly@reddit
They’re cushions. Pillows are to rest your head on while sleeping.
HiFiRoMan@reddit
In the summer? We don't bother, during winter in my garage
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Oh WoW! That looks great. Are your cushions; water resistant or water proof? I think we have quite similar cushions. Do you leave them out in the rain?
HiFiRoMan@reddit
I do cover them with the supplied water resistant cover and don't bother moving cushions indoors when it's rains. I never had any mold issues but we do wash the pillow covers at the beginning of each season, just to refresh them. Enjoy your furniture, it looks mint 👍😃
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Thanks mate; that is re-assuring and your garden looks awesome! Enjoy.
One_Complex6429@reddit
Ours shove down the side of the freezer in the conservatory. Our shed is wet in the winter too.
InternationalFig4340@reddit
In summer they just stay on the sofa, under the covers. In winter we use those enormous vacuum bags and store them in the attic
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
I think that looks potentially to be the plan. Unfortunately I don't go in the attic, and may be a pain to get out/ in. So it might be a vacuum packed under the stairs situation; or the dreaded near living room furniture arrangement.
At this rate, it might be easier bringing the outside furniture into the living room!
Rubberfootman@reddit
Some sets have a table which doubles as an outdoor waterproof storage box.
I suspect I’m currently in the same boat as you - looking at outdoor furniture, but wondering where to store the cushions all winter.
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
To be honest, I didn't think that far ahead.
I did buy a shed, which is placed on top of grass in the corner of the garden.
I happily stored the cushions in there, until a few months down the line, I noticed mold all over the Halford style Shelving Units!
As mentioned, unfortunately, the garden furniture cost more than my home sofa set!
But I wouldn't regret it, as when it sun's out, and bi-folds are open, great opportunity to relax with family and friends.
Key_Plum_99a@reddit
I think putting the shed straight onto the grass is giving you the mould problem. Doesn’t the shed have a concrete or paving slab base?
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
It’s on a wooden post/ pillars base, that is also on grass. You have got me wondering now; do you think its better I put it on a concrete/ pave base?
Rubberfootman@reddit
Oh dear. Sheds are like cellars - if something can go moldy, it will.
My problem is that our new shed is about a quarter of the size of the old (ancient, woodworm, rotten) one, so I’ve lost a lot of outdoor storage.
mamafish21@reddit
My auntie put a massive waterproof sheet over her garden furniture and used heavy stones so it didn't blow away. . Worked everytime it rained or snowed
Signal_Fisherman8848@reddit
That furniture set looks mint - hope you have many happy afternoons/evenings sitting in the sunshine
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Ah thank you. Most of the garden furniture I have seen are 'Rattan' style, but the Mrs wanted something in this style. Thank you for kind words.
Hopefully we have a few days of sun this year (typing this whilst it is still cold as hell in the mornings!)
FloofyRaptor@reddit
Ours are in the attic during the winter, and once it's nice enough they live under the cover on the sofa.
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
I wish I had the space. 5 huge seat cushions and then 5 pillows! Over winter, it has taken a good chunk of the corner of my living room.
TheCarrot007@reddit
Small ones in an outside store with a thing at the bottom to lift thrn
BrummyIVF@reddit (OP)
Do you have any rough ideas? I have thought about buying them plastic tub/ boxes, but they all seem tiny for a 3 sofa set! I should have taken a picture of them all stacked.
