What liveries seem to really fit one aircraft but look awkward on another?

Proportions and overall shape can really make or break how a livery looks on an aircraft. The battleship grey color scheme of United Airlines suited the Boeing 747 perfectly, its size and hump complementing the darker tones giving it a bold and almost intimidating look. On smaller aircraft like the A320 family and CRJs, it felt too heavy, and even on the 777 it lacked the same presence IMO.
On the other hand American Airlines’ polished metal livery worked best on single-deck planes like the Boeing 737, Boeing 757, and Boeing 767, where the cheatline aligned neatly with the cockpit windows. On the Boeing 747, the cockpit is raised so you can't really make it allign the same way you can with humpless aircraft.

The letter spacing on American's MD-11s always bothered me a bit

I like the all white tail though.

Those United greys look terrible on every aircraft
MetikMas@reddit
I like it on the CRJ. Hate it on the 747
Valder137@reddit
I just find it blah.
zabka14@reddit
I think the battleship gray scheme looks incredible on that CRJ200 !
Techhead7890@reddit
I dunno, to me the lettering looks out of scale, like a little kid trying to wear his dad's boots.
MetikMas@reddit
Much better than the 747

Depends on angle. It looks fine from side but from a diagonal view it makes my eye twitch.
Techhead7890@reddit
That does make the tailfin look really really tiny lmao
GrandJelly_@reddit
Would look great on the MD11 imo.

I mean theres concept art of the Ba livery in md11 colours although crappy quality

I am an MD-11 fan, that's really pretty to me.

I don’t think the AA livery looks weird on the 747, but I have to agree with pretty much all regional brands of a larger airline
HazyOtterman@reddit
Hot take: Battleship grey was a perfect livery in every regard EXCEPT for the font choice...Times New Roman on an airliner feels cheap and out of place
ThunderballTerp@reddit
100% agree.
I always thought the battleship gray UA livery looked best on the 747 and 777, and the polished AA livery looked best on the 757, A300, and 737.
Both are better than their current liveries, especially AA's...
MetikMas@reddit
I’m a certified hater of the battleship grey 747. That livery on that plane is one of my least favorite of all time. Way too unbalanced
Pitiful_Eye_3295@reddit
I think every livery looks good on the 747. The AA livery isn't perfect but it sure looked great carrying the shuttle. There's only one really terrible design that looks bad on the 747 and that's the new Air Force 1 livery. Weird that someone managed to find a terrible livery for it after so many years of good liveries.
MetikMas@reddit
The new AF1 looks like a knockoff US Airways

The fact that I don’t know which ones you think fit, and which are awkward, leads me to believe the answer is none.
pizzlepullerofkberg@reddit
I almost forgot American flew 747. My buddy's mom was a flight attendant for them for 40 years and she said the 747, DC-10 and MD-11 were the best planes for flight attendants.
DD3566@reddit
Wasn’t the shuttle carrier 747 an Ex-American airliner? Early photos still had the stripe down the side, just with the American text removed
rocbolt@reddit
asusc@reddit
Yes. AA sold it to NASA in the 70s when air travel declined from oil prices going up. Boeing modified it heavily in 78, but didn’t bother with the paint, as they were still testing the shuttle with it. They removed the AA logo, added a simple NASA logo on the tail with the original AA tricolor cheat line and bare aluminum.
It was modified further in 83, and for a full respray in white, new and bigger NASA logo on the tail, and a single NASA blue cheatline as an homage to the original AA tricolor cheatline.
langley10@reddit
As I recall reading the entire fin was replaced because it was easier to install one with the required hydraulic modifications done during assembly than making the changes to the existing one. Or maybe that was on the other shuttle carrier.
asusc@reddit
That could be the case. I know they added the vertical stabilizers to the tail during the first overhaul, but your theory would explain why that particular piece was the only one with a new logo until second overhaul and respray in 83.
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
Probably because the 747 was withdrawn rather quickly from AA's fleet. It was considered too big for them.
EvMund@reddit
It was precisely this too-bigness that made AA ask for someone to make a smaller widebody and hence create the DC-10 in particular and the single-deck widebody concept in general
blueberrycauzez@reddit
Fun fact, it's also why the L1011 was made since AA pitted Douglas and Lockheed against each other

Nah, I love those little buggers, the MD-11 though is infuriating.
I understand why though; painting the no. 2 engine nacelle anything but white comes at almost a 5% fuel economy detriment on that engine.
Jeeperman365@reddit
It's really bothering me how freakishly tiny those engines look
Mitchz95@reddit
I like the current Air Canada livery on smaller planes like the A320 or 737, but I feel like it kind of masks the size and shape of the bigger ones. Idk how to explain it but it looks generic.
Educational-Coat-750@reddit
I completely agree with you. It works well on narrow bodies but I hate it on the wide bodies.
KickFacemouth@reddit
I'm in an extreme minority by hating the racoon mask. The main reason I hate it is because airliners already keep looking more and more alike, and it masks a key distinguishing feature- the cockpit windows.
True-Industry-4057@reddit
On the larger ones there is too much empty space.
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
Yeah. Unlike the toothpaste livery they had before which fit both smaller and larger aircraft.
njsullyalex@reddit
I actually think both liveries look great on all planes shown
On a side note, we all know the AAA bare metal livery is most iconic on the mighty Maddog.
KickFacemouth@reddit
Though I was sad to see the Maddog go, I was a little glad it got to bow out before having to wear AA's new livery. We get to remember it like this forever.
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
When I picture an AA plane from the 90s and 00s, I think of the MD80 series of planes and the bare aluminum.

KLM looks great on the 737 and E190 but there’s just something off about it on the A321neo. I don’t think it goes well with the mask at all
jjamesr539@reddit
Polished metal is a good one. Newer models have a bunch of composite, the exterior isn’t all composite but polished metal would just look like a ridiculous patchwork on newer stuff. It’s why American’s “retro” livery for their centennial/flagship 777 is gray paint under the old style roundel and orange lightening bolt.
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
Then they could have just changed where the bare metal was with a grayish white and kept everything else the same. I mean they did that with the Avro.

The Air Canada eyeliner looks incredibly silly on the 777, but is a chef’s kiss on essentially every other plane in the fleet
langley10@reddit
If they just made it a tad bigger on the 777s it would look better
Lolpo555@reddit
The AA one would work on every airplane except on this 737-200.
mangolane0@reddit
This is going to sound crazy but I more associated the battleship gray livery with regional jets. Growing up riding with my Mom to drop off my Dad at O'Hare you could see the United regionals off the first corner turn into terminal 1.
whiskeytown79@reddit
I never liked the United gray livery. It seemed so generic. Like "Welcome to Standard Airlines, where our top priority is adequacy!"
penerey_ferguson@reddit
The corporate obsession with grey is something I’ll never understand. At least the AA one was silver
qwerqmaster@reddit
Idk battleship is iconic on the 777 for me
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
I feel like if the 777 had a more prominent nose, like the 747 instead of the smallee one, it would fit better IMO.
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
But yeah, Battleship grey on a small-nose, humpless aircraft doesn't really fit for me.
clearing_rubble_1908@reddit
The Alitalia livery really didn't work on the MD-11
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
It's because the tail engine disrupted the hockey stick cheatline, isn't it? Because that's kinda my main gripe too.
Pretty_Aside_7674@reddit
they should have moved it up a bit
rsbyronIII@reddit
Yeah, this looks like a mock up of a concept someone put together with stickers and a model plane. They could have tried doing something like this with it.
FZ_Milkshake@reddit
JAS livery, it worked beautifully on their A300s (obviously because it's the Airbus colors), on the MD-80s and DC-10s ... not so much.
ckanderson@reddit
Maaan their modern spiral and morphic rainbow liveries were awesome (777s and MDs). Used to fly them between Tokyo and Miyazaki.
Mogus00@reddit
Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa designed those liveries
Realistic-Bid9464@reddit (OP)
Idk, I kinda like the 80s aesthetic style stripes.
FZ_Milkshake@reddit
I really like the livery and I wish Airbus was still using it, I just think it clashes with the rear engine position, probably even more on the MD-80s.
CJets757@reddit
Canadian Proud Wings on the Dash 8. Looks spectacular on every other aircraft (especially the 747) but this looks a little awkward to me.
not_an_aussie44@reddit
The older KLM Livery. It looks nice on all aircraft imo, APART from any E-series aircraft. Then it looked off.
halfty1@reddit
Because it is off- with that livery KLM had the strip go through the center of the nose cone, but on the E jet that was too low along the fuselage that it would look bad. So they just chose an arbitrary spot.
With the 787 (that also has the center of the nose cone rather low on the fuselage) they decided to change the livery to include the swoop down at the front which was adapted for the entire fleet, and now changed to have the entire nose cone solid blue.

I always thought NWA’s Bowling Shoe looked odd on the 747. Looks much cleaner on the 727

I’m the complete opposite, I always thought it looked best on the 747 since the red emphasized the hump

I can say Singapore's livery refresh during the A380 rollout, fit into this category. The font size and the tail logo looks well positioned on the A330 and A350 but looks awkward on other jets including the A380 which the refresh was designed for. The tail logo looking out of symmetry on the tailfin.
I preferred the livery design they used during the height of the Big Tops, Megatops, and the Celestars in the 90s. It fit every jet type nicely.
Marl__n7@reddit
Most of the liveries mentioned (so far) emphasize the horizontal-ness of the aircraft; which is by design.
One of my favourite liveries was bmi, and the whole fleet looked good in their own way, but when you see an A319 next to an A321, it's just not balanced, somehow.
RandoDude124@reddit

Would've loved to fly on one from Dallas to Tokyo.
No-Brilliant9659@reddit
Ok but the 747 shuttle carrier that was still sporting the AA livery looks amazing
ThePurpleHyacinth@reddit
I think the oneworld livery looks good on the A350. It's clean and professional. However, I've always thought the oneworld Embraer looks awkward, mainly because the window is almost as big as the hole in the "e".
stillusesAOL@reddit
Nailed it with those two examples. It’s a design issue, proportions, the use of that vertical space the 747 provides.
D-pod@reddit
To me, United’s current livery with the large billboard titles seems to fit well for its wide bodies and longer narrow body planes. But it seems awkward to me on short narrow bodies like the 737-700 or A319/320.
