I miss Pier 1 Imports 🥲
YcemeteryTreeY@reddit
Papasan! Loved it when I was 16. Yeah, theyre for young people whose backs are invincible
Zoloista@reddit
I always thought our mamasan would be sooo comfy to sleep on. Even as a young person, one night and I was done with that dream.
Von_Jelway@reddit
Exactly. As an old man I just look at that and my back hurts.
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
I think today I would sit on the very edge stick-straight like Abe Simpson at Woodstock. I'm not square, I just have compressed discs!
Obi_Wan_Benobi@reddit
As someone who merely slept a little wrong two nights ago I feel this. Literally.
southdakotagirl@reddit
At 20 years old my aunt had one in the guest room. I would curl up in it and watch TV. It was so comfortable I would fall asleep in it. Almost 30 years later my back hurts just thinking about spending hours in one of these
Academic-Bar5300@reddit
Have the double papasan (mamasan) in my living room now. My boys have claimed it though.
Ok-Yam-4663@reddit
Yes
Thundertrukk@reddit
I used to take the back off and crawl around with the rounded part claiming to be a turtle.
Got grounded for pulling my friend Mickey sitting on the rounded part with my bike. It eventually got thrown out.
RepeatExotic9002@reddit
We played with ours too! Turtle was a great one. And laying under it like a cage.
growflet@reddit
The good old papasan chair.
I would curl up in it with my book.
I suppose today I would curl up in it with my phone.
whistleridge@reddit
Today, I curl up in an egg chair with my book:
It’s basically the same thing, but more stable and more comfortable.
fangirlsqueee@reddit
In the OP picture of the papasan, the base is upside down. The wider end should face up and the smaller circle is on the ground. Doesn't make it super duper stable, with the big chair ribs and all, but way more stable than when used as pictured.
RepeatExotic9002@reddit
Omg, all our instability on it growing up has just been explained. We were idiots! 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Damnation77@reddit
And quieter.
whistleridge@reddit
Truth.
lost_horizons@reddit
I had one of these, extremely uncomfortable. Makes your neck curl forward because the shell curling around. Leave off the shell and give me the papasan back!
dallyan@reddit (OP)
So cute!
growflet@reddit
oooh, my interest has been piqued!
whistleridge@reddit
I can’t recommend them highly enough. And they’re pretty cheap and widely available - your local Home Depot will have great indoor and outdoor models for a few hundred bucks tops.
agentmkultra666@reddit
Ugh, i would love to plop down on one of these right now and read a book
OrigamiTongue@reddit
I’d curl into it with my kindle. So does that could as book or phone.
rei7777@reddit
Book if Paperwhite/Colorsoft, phone if Fire lol
OrigamiTongue@reddit
Scribe. I don’t consider Fire a kindle lol
rei7777@reddit
Me neither but I didn’t want to be rude. Scribe is even more of a book. You can write in it. Without damage!
OrigamiTongue@reddit
Yeah I’m loving it! Got myself the previous generation model for super cheap in the last sale
UnkindnessOfRavens23@reddit
Old school Pier One.
EGOtyst@reddit
You can still read books.
growflet@reddit
I do, with the kindle app on my phone :D
EGOtyst@reddit
ahhhhhhhh, you got me!
Obi_Wan_Benobi@reddit
Had one of these in my first apartment.
We called it The Pod.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
I liked watching tv on it with my cat curled up on my shoulder.
BBWDLLUVER@reddit
Dog loved to hump it
Skitzafranik@reddit
Some of the best sleep I ever had!!! 😂
PookieCat415@reddit
I still have one…
MoulanRougeFae@reddit
My husband just bought me one last year for my birthday. He got the deluxe cushion too so it's a lot thicker than the old ones. I love it so much.
MetalNew2284@reddit
Best naps ever.
FelixAxellus@reddit
That era, I think of those chairs, bean bag chairs, and those knee chair things?
Sea2Chi@reddit
When people at parties would go to sleep/pass out we'd take the cushion off and put the basket over them like a cage then stack a bunch of pillows and coats on top.
They'd wake up confused, knock the tower over and everyone would laugh.
Any_Nectarine_7806@reddit
When I was a kid I kept calling it a Pakistan Chair.
chocolatepig214@reddit
We still have two of them! Had new cushions made in tweed and although we love them they usually have Labradors in them.
MaracujaBarracuda@reddit
I still have one too! I got the frame as a hand me down and have replaced the cushion twice. I will never give it up. Still have my lava lamp I got for Christmas in 6th grade too!
digthisbird@reddit
I was about to reply the same thing! I have a hand-me-down frame with a new cushion that my lab-mix has turned into his bed 😂
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Precious babyyyyy. 🥹🥹
No_Custard_6481@reddit
The most fun thing we had. Who could flip it and land in the middle was the game we played all of time. Like a turtle shell!
BlackLioConvoy@reddit
I have one now, just not as loud.
wander-lux@reddit
I am still a huge Stan and we have two in our home… one was permanently taken by our cat Nugget and we call her papasan princess.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Not the papasan-shaped cone on her head! Shes precious. 🥰
wander-lux@reddit
😂 aw thank you.
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
Didn’t grow up with one but the stoner house I lived in during my late teens/ealry 20s had one. I lived in that thing.
legalpretzel@reddit
I have one on my screen porch. It makes me sad that Pier One closed because that’s where I got mine and I’d love to buy another one.
Illustrious-Crow-331@reddit
I've always wanted one, and still do at age 50. But I think I'd have trouble getting in and out these days.
yomamaeatcorn@reddit
Had to guard the school president house in college for some event. They said to bring a chair from home.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Amazing lmao
Saritatay@reddit
My neighbor’s had these. And a lot of Wyland prints. It was a vibe.
spanishpeanut@reddit
Surely did. Loved that thing, too.
SheezaMom@reddit
I took it to college with me!
IntelligentAd3283@reddit
We had a double sized one in a lovely rust/orange.
bassgirl_07@reddit
When I was 5 or 6 my dad and I fell asleep in the window display papasan chair while my mom looked around the rest of the store. She found us and was joined by a salesman.... We weren't in the market (as it were) but it's pretty hard to say "no we don't want to buy one" at that point. 🤣
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Awww. 😊
ParticularBed6338@reddit
Loved taking a nap in that thing until the cat pissed on it.
cellrdoor2@reddit
I also had a papasan chair that my cat peed in. I did eventually get the smell out but had to cover it with a plastic tarp every time that cat went to the vet because she would pee in that specific spot for spite.
belushi99@reddit
We used to take it off the base and roll around the basement lino on it! We got in shit of course, but it didn’t stop us. 😂
OskeyBug@reddit
I would take it off the base and roll it around in circles.
christhomasburns@reddit
My roommate had one in my early twenties, I once came home to find him trapped naked under it after it flipped backwards upside down while he was doing some "personal care". I'll never be able to sit in one again.
ElsieBeing@reddit
I have one in my basement right now.
ladydonttekno1@reddit
I still have mine! Got it for a steal in the classifieds. I can't bear to let it go.
Bored_Acolyte_44@reddit
This post triggered me so hard
dogtor_howl@reddit
I WISH. I thought/still think these are the coolest.
senorgonzo2@reddit
Who wants to sit in a giant wicker contact lens?
kinetic_cheese@reddit
My friend had one in her house and I was so jealous. We'd put the bowl part on the floor and rock around pretending we were in a boat on a stormy sea.
Sodamyte@reddit
I was always afraid I would break them if I sat on them
jawnbaejaeger@reddit
Grew up with? I have one in my house now, and I love it.
FallingBackTogether@reddit
Same! It is so comfortable
neckbeardsghost@reddit
I always wanted one growing up, and as soon as I was able to get one as an adult, I immediately regretted it 😂 they are not as comfortable as they look, and a real bitch to get out of.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
The best chair in the basement, front and center, all to yourself. It survived a lot of abuse too, from the various wrestling, fort building, etc.
Amazing_Recording_31@reddit
Surprisingly uncomfortable for sex
tssdrunx@reddit
Surprisingly?
Amazing_Recording_31@reddit
Seemed like an interesting idea once in 2004, learned quickly it wasn’t
whither_wander_you@reddit
the way it would sound alone would be a hard pass for me...that squeaking is hell to my ears!!!
star_b_nettor@reddit
Love a papasan chair
Impressive-Compote60@reddit
Still have a papasan from Pier 1 in my office! It's the best reading chair ever.
Munchkin531@reddit
I wish I had had a papasan chair growing up! I'm short (5'0) and I used to weigh under 100 lbs as a teen. I would curl up in those chairs at my friends' houses.
When we got married my husband and I got one from some neighbors. It was so nice to make a nest and read books or play video games.
Soulforge411@reddit
Still have one, just better colors.
Wild_Manufacturer555@reddit
I always fell asleep in that chair at my best friends house growing up! So comfortable
ThoughtsHaveWings@reddit
Is Pier One out of business?
Famous_Asparagus_314@reddit
it was the only furniture I had in my first apartment
jenfullmoon@reddit
Still have mine!
piiiixie@reddit
My daughter inherited it from my dad, now my grandson has it in his playroom
Sea-Plum7880@reddit
I read my first novel charlottes web curled up in one of these bad boys.
59apache01@reddit
My aunt and uncle had a couple on their back porch.
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
the house we often rented down the shore had a set of this kind of furniture, including this reading chair. i knocked out so many nancy drew books in this bad boy!
Boose81@reddit
I always wanted one growing up, but never got one. So, I bought one for myself a year ago! The cats use it more than I do, though.
Supercres933@reddit
I thought these were the epitome of style as a kid
Lost-Wanderer-405@reddit
My husband has fond memories of himself and his grandma cozied up in a papasan chair.
CaramelToesies77@reddit
I have one...
48llewro@reddit
I still have one! love it
GarblingCumfarts@reddit
They sell them at Walmart again and if I had a spot for it in my house, I'd get it. I also know exactly what will happen if I buy one, it'll end up just being another spot for my cats.
sjd208@reddit
I had the double version of this in my dorm room, I could curl up completely on it and take those glorious naps teenagers can do at the drop of a hat.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Wait, like it was elongated or just double the size?
serpentarienne@reddit
World Market still has these (single and double)!
i’ve been eyeing a double, not sure if that’s wise at this advanced age…
OldJames47@reddit
It was an oval instead of circle.
Ill-Percentage-3276@reddit
We had this size and the couch sized version, so it could be like a big crib when you adjusted it.
whither_wander_you@reddit
BOTH of my children took many a nap in ours before they started crawling. there was something about how it cocooned them like arms.
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Papasan! Super comfortable
Aevo7rynthialex77@reddit
That chair is why I have trust issues with anything woven. You sit down too fast and suddenly your thigh looks like a waffle for three hours. My aunt had one in her sunroom next to a fake ficus and we all fought over who didn't have to sit in it. Still miss that smell though. Pier 1 had a specific scent — like dried cinnamon sticks and regret.
whither_wander_you@reddit
nope. but always wanted one...now I have adult money, and have one in our playroom. its so fucking comfy!!!
Scissorsguadalupe@reddit
I didn't grow up with one, but when moved out it seems like every place lived as a single had one that was picked for free from the curb
StonedWheatThicc@reddit
I have one in my bedroom now. I never sit in it, it’s the designated cat/laundry chair.
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
Look at you fancy people getting cool furniture.
GratefuLdPhisH@reddit
Were they actually supposed to were they actually supposed to be comfortable?
Anieya@reddit
Even after the frame broke, the cushion was my old dog’s favorite bed until she passed
Firebolt164@reddit
They were awesome! I would sleep in them
ThePaleDreamer@reddit
I didn’t have one in high school, but I worked for Pier 1 for years. I still have several papasans as a result.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Wow what was it like working there?
chocolatepig214@reddit
We still have two of them! Had new cushions made in tweed and although we love them they usually have Labradors in them.
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
I had one as a kid. Spilled a drink on it and didn't tell my parents. Then it forever had mildew in the cushion. My bad.
refuz04@reddit
Shit son that was my bed when it was mom’s week.
NewOpposite8008@reddit
I would sleep in mine a lot of the time. It was my nest lololol
Rhediix@reddit
Never had one in the house growing up, but did I run immediately to the papasan upon entering a Pier 1 while my mom shopped? Yes. Yes I did.
SaveusJebus@reddit
No, but always wanted one
PL02550@reddit
I still have mine minus the swivel base. We went World Market and purchased a few replacement cushions.
SplinterLips@reddit
Poppa John’s !!
FreeFortuna@reddit
I wanted one soooo bad growing up, but my parents wouldn’t/couldn’t buy one. Probably for the best that I forgot they existed by the time I furnished my first apartment.
unclebea@reddit
My aunt had one that would hang from the ceiling
viridiansoul@reddit
No, but I would have loved to have one!
hyjnx@reddit
My dog sleeps in the one I had as a teenager.
82ndGameHead@reddit
I'm embarrassed that it took me so long to learn how to best sit in that chair.
I was a dumb kid, tho
HerRoyalRedness@reddit
I had one that traveled back and forth to University with me.
Treadingresin@reddit
Not something I grew up with but I swear it was in everbodies first cheap apartment in my twenties.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Yes from Cost Plus World Market
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
I got mine from Pier One
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Same. I looooved Pier 1 Imports. I can still remember the woody, faintly incense smell of it.
peeinian@reddit
Ours finally fell apart a couple years ago. Had it for about 20 years.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Awww. This made me smile. 🥰🥰
-notfadeaway-@reddit
I remember falling off of them while drinking beer.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
The experience seems to oscillate between childhood and drunken frat house antics.
reporthazard@reddit
love spinning in those
bikeonychus@reddit
I have one! But it was a cheap shitty one, so the base is weak.
I swear up and down that it was the cure for my chronic plantar fascitis. Probably because once I was in it, I would be there for a couple of hours, and actually gave my foot rest for once.
No-Dig-4408@reddit
For some reason we called them "potato chip chairs" and I've never heard the term elsewhere.
AetheriaInBeing@reddit
I did not, but my aunt had one. That was always a cozy place to curl up when I was there!
mysecretissafe@reddit
I had one growing up, or rather, my living room did.
I found one on the side of the road (sans cushion) last year and was super stoked about it, cleaned it up, got a cushion for it and made space… and within about 6 months me and my partner’s nostalgia wore off as we realized how unfriendly to old people they are. So now it’s outside staging to be a plant cage for the garden and the cushion is a dog bed. Lol.
dallyan@reddit (OP)
Come to think of it, my parents never sat in it. My brother and I did.
0coconut0@reddit
Yes!!! Had one from Pier 1 and loved it. Also had an inflatable chair🤣
bcentsale@reddit
I had never seen one until my brother-in-law had one, and it was my favorite place to curl up and chill when we'd go see him. Then he got married and his wife made him get rid of it. 😞
Resident_Lion_@reddit
not only grew up with one, owned one in the non-official frat house i lived in through college. by the end it was a slim margin to sit in it and not end up turtled on the floor
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Not until college
blue_suavitel@reddit
Oh those were the best!
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
Your chiropractor thanks you.
