You don't think the type of people who like Che Guevara like him because he was Communist?
This isn't modern media, this is history books. I didn't even say I had an opinion about it other than I don't get it. Please take a breath of non-digital oxygen.
I know what I wrote. It's not my responsibility how you interpreted it, but you seem to have extrapolated an entire narrative about it. This is just a discussion, and I made a statement that communists are heroes to some people. How is that controversial?
The comment you responded to listed three problems with Che. You felt it necessary to isolate "Communist", as if you were making a point that it's still a problem.
And now you're like, "I was just innocently saying random words! It's not my fault you listened to them!"
Got it. One of these things is not like the other. Racists are pieces of shit. Homophobes are pieces of shit.
People generally sometimes respond positively to one of those three things. It's valid to promote communism. Even popular in sime circles. I don't like the idea at all but I respect the philosophy. It's not inherently evil but the human implementation basically always falls down. People who wear a Che shirt are generally leaning on the promotion of communist ideals.
Your reading comprehension is fucking hilarious and awful. I'm clearly more left leaning and open-minded than you will ever hope to be. You think I watch Fox News? I don't even know what channel it's on.
I think we weren't as quick to condemn people for the time they existed. Che was an incredible communist revolutionary, and as is with most historical figures, he was also a gigantic asshole and a sack of shit.
Ah, so he gets a pass, but yall tear down statues of historical figures because they were racist. You can’t have it both ways. Evil is evil. No excuses
Your comparison only works if there were Che Guevara statues in places where people he harmed are forced to live under them. There aren’t.
Communities that oppose him don’t put up monuments to him. Communities that do honor him do so because of their own history.
Statues are celebrations, not neutral history.
So no—this isn’t “having it both ways.” It’s just understanding context.
This isn't even true about Che as his face became a pop-culture icon. However people often had no clue what he actually did. The imagery could represent more of a counter culture movement or a sign of rebellion, but most people rocking his face had little clue what he actually stood for.
Perhaps in this case ignorance is a more valid defense versus someone liking a historical figure exactly because they were a piece of shit racist.
Che's actual behavior was pretty shitty in the end, and he shouldn't be worshipped like some kind of hero, but in the last 60 years use of his image has not always aligned with endorsement of his behavior.
People are entitled to wear whatever they want. But having the imagery of the guy as your choice is not the same as the local government erecting a statue or monument in memory of a controversial figure.
It wasn't just shirts but the famous headshot was used for murals and other media. In this case RATM used the image for the single artwork of the song Bombtrack.
He was also a communist as well. But VERY few people know about what you wrote. I'm surprised to hear that here. Caesar Chavez just recently got canceled for SA. MLK may be coming too. Though I don't think he was accused of SA. But was certainly NOT the people make him out to be.
There's allegations, but a lot of that could also be chalked up to Cointelpro, I can't honestly say I know the truth. I think a bunch of records are supposed to be unsealed here pretty soon so it'll be interesting in what's in them.
Controversy aside, Cubans in America are perhaps the worst people to show an image of the Che Guevara. It is their right to hate on the guy because the guy was no saint and it is their posterboy of an ideology many disagree with. But Cubans in the US have taken these arguments along with some propaganda and disinformation to just uber-hate anything linked to the Castro regime.
Wait. Are you saying that you didn’t listen to or buy music when you were 15? Shit… at 15, I think it was the only thing I thought money was good for. Any money I had was for the newest album by whatever band, and just enough left over for some Taco Bell to eat while listening to it for the first time.
I wasn't talking about influence or purchasing power. I was talking about the ages at which people tend to form the strongest emotional attachment to music. There are two age ranges for that, one in early childhood and one in adolescence. Because both of those age ranges are pretty young, the people with the most emotional attachment to a band's music tend to be younger than the band members themselves, by virtue of the fact that most bands don't get big until they're adults.
Remember when Paul Ryan said he listened to RATM? Like I get that the music is aggressive and powerful but are the words not clear enough mother fucker?

Y'know, I lost two family members to COVID, in less than a month, just before the vaccine rollouts.
One of them was my father in law. He had just retired. He got sick around Easter, suffered for a few weeks in the hospital, then they put him on a ventilator, and then he was gone.
Our last conversation was over Zoom, right before the ventilator. A nurse held an iPad in front of his face for him, because he didn't have the strength to hold it himself. His normally booming baritone was reduced to a fragile wisp. He said wanted us to be there when he woke up. We promised him we would be.
He died 2 weeks before his vaccination appointment.
We're days away from the five-year anniversary of his death. The grief remains.
My wife didn't deserve to have to go alone to see him at the end, in full protective gear, unable to even hold his hand without a glove on. My daughter didn't deserve to be robbed of her favorite person before she was old enough to build lasting memories of him.
Were it not for some random person walking around with a mask under their chin, he would still be with us.
And there are millions with the same story. Millions.
I'm not mad at you, but respectfully, friend, your rage is directed at the wrong machine.
Over the past year I haven't stopped listening to this album. Those who are looking for them to write something new about the current situation are missing the point. This album is like a perfect thesis paper on life under fascism. Turns out people of color, and women, have been living under fascism this whole time. Every single song is 100% relevant today and spot on. No more lies. Anger is a gift.
I remember sitting on my parents living room floor watching mtv’s top 20 video countdown. Song came on, started with a “UGHHHH” and grabbed me instantly. Seeing/hearing “anger is a gift” as an 11/12yr old blew my damned mind.
“Freedom” is one of my all-time favorite songs to this day.
Lol, the most fraudulent band of the 90s/2000s, by a long ways... such a joke, even more so looking back on their band history of why they broke up, how much they charge for concerts, etc.
I listen to Rage whenever my kids are in the car. If I tell them to listen, they won’t. If I sing Bulls on Parade at the top of my lungs then explain it when they have no escape plan, maybe they’ll learn!
Thing 1 doesn’t show too much interest in them, but Thing 2 jams to Rage!

RATM says teachers indoctrinate students. Experience tells me I can’t even get them to read the syllabus.

Not enough kids these days know about RATM. They should.

Yup, they screamed this warning long-time ago. I just never thought things would actually turn out as bad as they have.

I get what you are saying. But the message is still the same.
