3 Skills Test

Has anyone had any issues with not passing their three skills test at this point? I’m starting to think it’s personal they always nitpick something to fail me for when I clearly know the material. At this point, the pre-trip inspection is embedded in my brain and they still don’t pass me. I don’t know what to do at this point anymore. Any tips?

My practice examiner said I didn’t name a bunch of shit I clearly went over on my practice exam to try psyche me out the day before. If someone doesn't like you there isn’t anything you can do but be ironclad in language.

What do they say when they fail you? What are you getting "wrong?" Is it just the pre trip?

I thought I did it flawlessly. Did the air brakes test perfect that wasn't the issue but she told me that I mixed up the water coolant reservoir with the power steering reservoir when I clearly didn't I know the difference I'm not stupid. But what's my word against hers even if I didn't I can't challenge it. Also on the clearance between my landing gear and my truck, I said I'm gonna make sure there's enough clearance from my landing gear to my back tire on my trailer and she told me it's "make sure there's enough clearance from the back of my trailer to my landing gear" so she failed me for that.

We're those the only mistakes? You can miss a certain number of points and still pass.

From my understand yeah that’s what she told me. I’m honestly surprised she didn’t pass me :(

Think of it like memorizing a script. It has to be exact

Not sure where you're at, but I know that in LA, if you miss one part of the tire check, you miss the entire tire. Say you're forgetting to mention that the tire is at the correct pressure, every other part of the tire is now uncountable. Wording is everything. Have you made it past the pre-trip part of the test yet?

Yes I made it all the way to the road test and they failed me three times on the road test so now I’m starting ALL OVER AGAIN

When I was in CDL school, the instructor had us recite the pretrip with very specific wording because the examiners were so strict about what they wanted to hear.
That being said, they have a points system to grade you, so they won’t fail you for any one little thing. It’s either a bunch of little things or one big thing (like the air brake test).
Does your instructor have any feedback for you?

People at DMV to take tests do not have a CDL. They just know how to take the test. What worked for me is thinking about it as acting with one audience member. But it wasn’t too hard for me, so not sure if I’m being helpful.

They nitpick everyone

Examiners can be pretty humourless and strict. There's a good reason to ensure you absolutely know the material inside and out though.

record your pre trip on your phone and run through it at home, watch it and compare to some cdl test videos, sometimes it’s one tiny phrase they wanna hear exactly their way talk out loud, slow down, over point at stuff it feels dumb but testers are picky as hell
