why do dog owners let their barking dogs outside for ages?

Same with kids who just run around, they just don't seem to care? This weird tunnel vision only thinck entitled people seem to have.
Snoo_23014@reddit
Every single , and I mean EVERY single post that complains about dogs immediately gets a comment comparing dogs to human children.
Children SHOULD run around and play out, that's what being a kid IS.
Saying that, dogs should also be running around and getting those barks out of their system.
Death_Binge@reddit
Sure, but there's a difference between that and those same kids having a screaming competition in the middle of the street at 9pm.
Snoo_23014@reddit
The thread is about barking dogs.
Death_Binge@reddit
it sure is. Almost like threads go off on tangents sometimes!
LazyEmu5073@reddit
I like turtles.
Snoo_23014@reddit
It just baffles me that so many people think dogs and human children are the same thing to be dealt with in the same way.
Nobody says this about cats, stolen quad bikes , car alarms or crackheads screaming at each other. Just dogs.
It's weird as fuck to be honest.
mgrtimmy29@reddit
Yeh all the same, just dogs and children are more prevelent, and everyone has to put up with it if they like it or not. I cant remember the last time a quadbike, crackhead or car alarm has annoyed me. But can guarantee you the other two are a weekly, if not daily occurance.
Snoo_23014@reddit
Start a thread about annoying kids then and stop hijacking dog ones.
Imagine a life where you have annoying things happen. Must be hell.
mgrtimmy29@reddit
Of course, but in tesco? Around coffee shops? In shopping centers? Etc
Snoo_23014@reddit
This thread is about dogs outside in gardens, not about tesco, coffee shops or children.
Did something bad happen to you mate? There's help.
JanCueElQi@reddit
That has literally nothing to do with a discussion about dogs barking in gardens though.
mgrtimmy29@reddit
Same thing really. Both annoying af and both preventable by similar people.
ClassicPart@reddit
Glad we agree. Both people and dogs should be out having the time of their lives instead of wallowing in misery like a Redditor.
pervertsage@reddit
Are you one of the unlucky turds that got curb stomped by Charlie Brown and Snoopy?
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Because it is better than them barking incessantly inside their house I presume.
yousorusso@reddit
Dude, I'm surrounded by 4 massive dogs. They all just shout to each other over the fences from 7am to 7pm. Makes me feel less bad about loud music at least.
EitherChannel4874@reddit
Because they're selfish arseholes that are probably able to block out their dogs noise.
Amazing-Visual-2919@reddit
Most don't do this. We definitely don't do it. No neighbours dogs do it either.
Petrichor_ness@reddit
Because there are two types of dog owners:
Makes a conscious choice to bring a dog into their lives. Acknowledges it's a living animal that's completely dependant on us for its health and happiness and do whatever we can to ensure those needs are met even when they're hard/inconvenient/exhausting/expensive.
Buys a dog because of pester power/impulse buy/aesthetics. These people will expect the dog to fit into their life and the less it does, the less effort they put into it.
Majestic_Swordfish83@reddit
I always say that there are dog people, and people who have dogs, and they are not the same.
doegrey@reddit
So they don’t have to listen to them barking inside the house.
Which makes it sound like their dog is the barking right outside the window if the room I’m working in for hours on end.
I’ve lost any respect I had for my neighbours. They don’t deserve a dog.
Anxious_wank@reddit
The owners aren't there. It's very obvious, these dogs only stop when the owners return.
There's a new one near me that starts around 8ish, goes non-stop until about 1/2ish. It's constant to the point it must be damaging itself.
knightsbridge-@reddit
We had a loud dog when I was a kid.
You just become numb to it. He's going to bark, no matter what you do. If you shush him or try and stop him, it only holds for about five minutes before he starts up again. Decades of attempts to train him out of it never really worked.
So he can bark right next to you, or he can bark at the end of the garden. You hear the former and neighbours hear the latter. Back in my house, we used to split it near 50/50 so we only had to deal with half of it.
ultimateberk@reddit
Living next door to this issue for many years always being on edge because they sounded like they were in the same room as me ended up with me disliking dogs. I never had a problem with dogs up until this. It was relentless and the owners were selfish, two border collies always at home howling and barking. It really changed me. It affected my sleep, my peace, my mental health and how i felt about dogs. I ended up hating my neighbours. I confronted them many times but they didnt care, the sound of a dog barking is like ptsd to me. I despise the sound. I dont want to feel this way but thats what it did
Etheria_system@reddit
Same here. Used to love dogs, have lived next door to an xl bully since 2022 and I’m now scared of dogs and absolutely dislike them. I don’t like the sound of a dog barking at all anymore, it sends my nervous system haywire.
I think it should be illegal to own a dog without a license that requires you to go through proper training on how to handle them and look after them.
farmraisedpotatoes@reddit (OP)
this is exactly how i feel! i used to love dogs but since moving here, im actually sick and tired of them now😔 hate being woken up so early bc the neighbours are inconsiderate and selfish! my neighbours don’t even have jobs so idk why they do this
Nearby_Werewolf1742@reddit
I feel the exact same, I've always loved dogs and used to have a dog but an inconsiderate neighbour a few years ago has put me off of dogs, I can't stand relentless constant barking anymore.
CoffeeIgnoramus@reddit
I literally started checking if there were dogs next door to any place I considered renting because it was that big of an issue.
It's a shame because I actually like dogs, but I will never own one because I can't bear to be that person for someone else.
New_Line4049@reddit
Dogs love to play outside. Barking can be for many reasons, one of which is an excited dog having a good time. Its part of being a dog. Entirely unreasonable to expect all dogs to be kept locked inside and silent at all times. If you dont like noise dont live near the rest of society, ho find a cabin in the woods away from all that noise of civilisation.
Etheria_system@reddit
The sort of dogs that are just shut out on their own are not barking because they’re having good time. They’re barking because they want to be let back in.
New_Line4049@reddit
Some are. Some are not.
Etheria_system@reddit
You think people are out there playing with their dogs at 1 in the morning?
New_Line4049@reddit
No one is talking about 1 in the morning.
Etheria_system@reddit
My neighbours dog basically lives outside. It’s an xl bully that she has for “protection”. It barks all the time and she just ignores it. Thankfully we now have better fences so I don’t have to see the awful thing - I got so scared of it I couldn’t go out into my garden for a while. It does this horrible growl bark thing where it sounds like it’s going to kill you if it sees you through a fence.
whodunnit20@reddit
We have three Labradors and our house is right next to fields, when dog walkers go past one of the dogs starts barking. He acts like a guard dog plus he can’t see who is going past because of our fence. If any of them start barking I’m immediately on it, I give them the choice of being quiet or coming in. I live in a little village and my house is in a very quiet area and that’s how I like it. We all respect each other, there is never loud music, parties or anti-social behaviour. I might have dogs but I have total respect for others.
farmraisedpotatoes@reddit (OP)
wish my neighbours were like you😩
poopolisher@reddit
Who wants a barking dog in the house
blazesboylan91@reddit
Because they’re self-absorbed oblivious bar stewards. This has triggered me 😂 had some baaaad experiences living next door to idiot dog owners
Dutch_Slim@reddit
Because they are arses.
I have a dog. He goes out, he comes in.
Sometimes he might have a chat with a neighbouring dog, but I put a stop to that after about 5 woofs, and so do the neighbours.
strodey123@reddit
House on the next road across leaves their dogs outside from morning until evening, and they bark (more yapping) at EVERYTHING.
I've questioned why they even bothered getting dogs if you don't want to spend time with them.
Suspicious-Rub8976@reddit
They wanted a cute puppy totally disregarding that they require training and life long care/companionship, but they don't want to seem like bad people by putting them up for adoption so the poor things spend the rest of their miserable lives left outside alone without stimulation, barking at anything that moves
jimmywhereareya@reddit
Because they're arseholes
jason14wm@reddit
Live in an apartment and neighbours leave the dog all day at home while they at work. Constantly barks all day. Nightmare. Can hear it go ape shite when it hears them coming up the stairs. I mean absolutely basaltic scratching at the door and all
Logical_fallacy10@reddit
It’s like screaming kids - the parents are immune to it. But it’s really bad parenting. If you can’t control your dog or kid - don’t have any.
Key_Produce2617@reddit
Because they don’t want them barking inside.
Crazy_Plum1105@reddit
They've nipped out so they can't hear the barking and so it's not their problem /s
catmadwoman@reddit
Neighbours definitely did this when nearby shopping. Friday nights usually. Moved away now. They were so nice everyone complained to each other but never to them 😂
lukeyboyuk1989@reddit
My dog is very barky when she wants to play and being the one playing with her I never really gave it much notice. A few summers ago I had the french doors open and she was going bananas barking and playing for probably a good 10-20minutes, neighbours shouted over the fence to shut the dog up. Since that moment I've been super on top of her barking, if she's playing and barking I shut the doors/windows, if she barks outside she has to come in straight away. Some people like myself are basically ignorant to the fact others can hear their dogs barking until we're told. I apologised obviously and all good ever since.
Nearby_Werewolf1742@reddit
How can anyone be so ignorant and oblivious that you didn't know anyone could hear your dog barking? That puzzles me. At least you attempt to stop it now I guess.
lukeyboyuk1989@reddit
I was playing with my dog and get caught up in it. You ever play with say kids and they're loud but you don't really realise they're annoying other people by being loud? Kind of like that.
Tallman_james420@reddit
See this is where people whose dogs bark don't know they bark because people don't tell them and so the circle continues.
I've known dog owners who have been told and they've been mortified as they had no idea.
whodunnit20@reddit
😂😂😂😂
KoorbB@reddit
That’s not the norm as far as this dog owner is concerned. If our dogs bark they come straight back in. NOBODY likes a barking dog, at least not us. It comes down to common courtesy but like everything and everyone, not everybody lives by the same standards.
Tanto207064@reddit
They’re just talking to each other
L-0-T-H-0-S@reddit
Because otherwise they (the dogs) end up barking and shitting inside. Dogs are sociable animals, isolation (for them) is a punishment, they suffer separation anxiety and they're only way of expressing their feelings is to bark.
The only feedback to their situation (often) is a response form another (similarly) distraught animal.
What your dealing with basically is a distraught animal with a profound lack of mental stimulation to take its mind off its situation and owners who frankly shouldn't be allowed to own the things.
jilljd38@reddit
Honestly don't know how my neighbour copes listening to her dog bark day in day out it's constant all day , I can only assume being drunk helps her ignore it , can't use my garden because when the dog is out it lunges at the fence , it's never walked just thrown out in the garden for hours till I scream at it to shut up , sometimes she just opens the front door and let's it out then screams for it to come in which it doesn't so you then get the fun of watching someone who's drunk chase a massive dog who hasn't been trained , sadly one day its going to end badly the dog with either bite someone or another dog or get run over , absolutely loved dogs till she got this one
sapphire-sky-dragon@reddit
I have 4 dogs and dont understand it but if they are going out they probably dont know.
I had a cat flap fitted a few months ago I never leave my dogs alone but I had to go to the dentist one day, thankfully the bus stop is at the side of my house after ten mins I could hear this awful screeching not barking very high pitched whining/crying yipping noise i thought omg what is that it sounded like something being hurt i didnt even realise it was a dog. After a few mins I thought oh god I better go check one of my dogs he has IVVD and can become paralysed at any moment and he screams in pain, I live in an upstairs flat and panicked in case he fell down stairs.
So I ran back home to find two of my dogs in the garden just running round frantic screeching I was really puzzled so I thought maybe tbey ran past me as I locked the door and I didnt realise so I put them back in im half way down the path and they came flying out the cat flap I dont even know how they fit but if the bus was 5 mins earlier I wouldnt of heard them and known.
Now I have to lock the cat flap when I go out and they hammer on the back of it trying to get through one still screeches but not much I can do about it, I have only left them 3 times this year for an hour for doctors appointments I could never leave them in the garden they could get stolen for a start.
Now they use the cat flap 24/7 they never bark during the night thank goodness and they dont get up until 8.30am .
I have a waist high gate separating mine and downstairs neighbours door two of them bark if they hear my neighbour coming and going , one will bark if she hears the back neighbours talk but I shout down and tell her to shut up after 3 barks. I can tell by her bark if someone is hanging around or she just barks for the sake of it I let her bark 3 or 4 times to alert as thats her job.
Maybe put notes through doors as they may not realise but locking dogs out all day is just cruel .
PKblaze@reddit
Cause they're crap and inconsiderate owners.
KEW95@reddit
I think it’s usually a lack of interest in the dog and no care for neighbours’ feelings. Our dog has anxiety and is on meds (as well as training and expensive vet behaviourist appointments), but there’s still a lot of barking in response to noises. She can be sunbathing and chill, then suddenly start barking. Then she’ll go back to sunbathing several minutes later. Sometimes we try to let her bark and self-regulate, but other times we bring her in or try to distract her. It didn’t start until foxes brought cubs into the garden behind ours a year ago and we haven’t been able to cure it.
Most people probably assume things about us and/or her, but we do our best. That said, it is often just owners not being responsible for their animals and not giving a crap about other people.
Macrihanishautomatic@reddit
I sometimes wonder the same thing. I can only assume it’s a lack of sensitivity and awareness. Intelligent, thoughtful people are usually troubled by disruptive noise.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
I have a barky dog.. I can’t even stand it myself for more than 5 minutes! She’s got a big bark too.. if she’s barking I’ll go see what she’s doing! Usually another dog 50 miles away she can hear? Then give her the cue to knock it off.. or let her back in! How anyone can ignore it is beyond me..
There’s someone round here with 3 chihuahuas and they are out morning, noon and night! When one starts they all go at it.. then next doors dog starts who’s also seemingly never in the house! ( never seen them walk that dog) Then mine will join in.. like a fucking dogs chorus!
We also have a husky round here and those things love to sing the song of their people…
Markee6868@reddit
I really believe it's so the owners can enjoy some peace and quiet inside the house without the dog barking..
Slightly_underated@reddit
I have three dogs which all have their moments but I don't ever let them bark outside to excess. I don't like the noise either so it must be extra frustrating for those neighbours of mine who are not dog lovers. Some of my neighbours do let their dogs bark for far to long in my opinion, some are elderly and are either deaf or just don't give a fuck by that age. Others are just disrespectful idiots.
Top-Childhood5030@reddit
Not sure about letting them out for hours to bark but from our experience we didn't realise for about a month that our dog at the time used to bark non stop after we had left the house after 10 minutes or so. It was only until the neighbours mentioned it to us because we had actually never seen her bark ever before this. We ended up going for a walk one day and sneaking back to catch her in the act. It was separation anxiety as she was a rescue. It took some time and work but we were able to sort it in the end.
