If you think he’s stockpiling ‘weapons’ you should call the authorities.
Unusual_Sort_5245@reddit (OP)
I know people say this often but he genuinely doesn’t seem like the type I do think they’re just being misplaced. I was more hoping to get advice on how to tell him to get a job without pissing him off. I don’t think he really wants to hear it from his little sister he just gets annoyed

u/Usual_Sort_5245 please read this. Please make a report. If it’s nothing then there is nothing to worry about. You can ask to remain anonymous.
flyte_of_foot@reddit
So why even mention it then? You wouldn't have, unless you were worried about it specifically.
StarSpotter74@reddit
Are any other items being "misplaced"? Or is it the ones that can cause serious harm/death?
He has to be the person to get himself a job. You're not his mother and he's an adult. It is not your responsibility.

I’m not too sure cuz my mum is genuinely always screaming about something going missing. it’s not just knives and scissors there are some normal household items too like idk hair products or phone chargers. but my mum has brought up old knives and scissors going missing most often. my brothers the type to leave big piles of dishes in his room for weeks at a time, so perhaps that’s why im not too suspicious
JobAnxious2005@reddit
He’s not the type until he is the type… and it’s too late.
pajamakitten@reddit
But do you want to be another of those who got that seriously wrong?
The-Jelly-Fox@reddit
There is genuinely no way to be accurate with, “he doesn’t seem like the type”.
Sure, my kitchen scissors go missing every once in a while and I find someone put them away in the wrong drawer or my kid used them for a craft project and didn’t put them away where the belong.
But multiple knives and scissors going missing and being unaccounted for is not something to ignore, especially when it coincides with a noticeable change in behaviour from a man you are livng with.
This is how people become statistics, because the ignore the signs that were there all along and think, “oh no, he’s not the type.” Or “surely he wouldn’t.”
You asked pointedly, “Am I in danger?”
If you have to ask, then I would say that YES YOU ARE IN DANGER!
Either talk with your mum and get her to inspect his room, or call the police and report what you have observed.
Do something. Don’t just sit there and hope nothing is wrong.
WeeklyPermission239@reddit
This, and read the report into the Southport tragedy. TL;DR it started like this.
Victorius_Meldrus@reddit
You need to involve the authorities. At the very least get a referral for a visit from the CPN.
Unusual_Sort_5245@reddit (OP)
my mum has called the police on him before for refusing to move/help out and they referred us to family therapy and samaritans lol. even they don’t take it seriously
The-Jelly-Fox@reddit
They will if they suspect violence. Knives and scissors going missing should be reported immediately.
Victorius_Meldrus@reddit
This. Particularly following the absolute shambles that preceded the Axel Rudakubana incident. (Most) local authorities are much more mindful of potentially dangerous behaviours now.
I'd call 111 and get some advice about how to proceed. NHS 24 are specifically trained in handling emerging psychiatric/mental health incidents and will be able to directly escalate the report if it's appropriate to do so.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
I think you need to start making plans to move out as soon as possible. For your own mental health, and to minimise any potential risk. You might not be in danger, but is it worth the risk? To stay somewhere where your family don't let you live in peace? I would suggest speaking to friends in case you need an emergency sofa to stay on, but in the meantime start looking for a room or flat to rent.
Unusual_Sort_5245@reddit (OP)
i moved out for uni and IMMEDIATELY became a shut in for some reason. i doubt i can make it on my own atm, which is why i returned home. the rent is also a lot cheaper her which is a burden off my mental health. when i’m away and i know i’m doing nothing to support my mum financially it really wears on me, even if she hasn’t been the nicest.
Alarming-Tie-1892@reddit
As your brother is over 24, has he applied for HB? As a lodger in the home? It sound like your mum is struggling with bills which is why she wants to rent the rooms out. Just an idea, or get advice fro. Your local CAB.
Melodicmat@reddit
I didn't think that was possible if you are living with your parents?
Unusual_Sort_5245@reddit (OP)
I’m not sure. I know he’s on universal credit though
