Sudden body fails, seem to be all at once

My right hip is so painful at night it's starting to keep me up tossing and turning to find a good position, I'm putting voltaren on my wrists for pain I can only assume carpal tunnel, my back is stiff, it takes a while for my ankles to 'warm up' when I first start walking in the a.m. To add to all of it, I'm in menopause (57f) which also comes with it's own laundry list of bizarre symptoms: vertigo, tinnitus, frozen shoulder, sleep apnea and of course the wonderful world of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, depression.
I will admit I haven't been great on the exercise front, so I'm starting yoga, but this all seemed to hit me all at once at 57.
whatsupgrizzlyadams@reddit
I suggest you do some PT for you hips and back.
itcantjustbemeright@reddit
Whatever you do don't stop moving and doing stuff because that's when it really seizes up.
kermitsfrogbog@reddit
Yes! I started physical therapy. And as much as I hate to have to pay for it, it's what keeps me moving. Working at a desk has been hell on my body. Who knew that would happen?
Special_Cranberry679@reddit
Yoga is less expensive.
Round-Public435@reddit
So sorry to hear you're dealing with all this pain - definitely not fun.
If it helps to know - you're not alone. I'm headed for 2 hip replacements at some point this year myself, have had my neck fused, and at some point in the future, back surgery might be on the list, but I'm trying to avoid that one - and now one of my shoulders has started keeping me awake at night.
I like to joke that my warranty ran out when I turned 50, because that's when things started going downhill. 5 years later, and I feel like body parts are just going to start falling off. Some days, I almost wish they would.
kten1974@reddit
Me too! I turned 50 and the number really didn't bother me until a few months after everything started to hurt, it caught me off guard! Had been feeling great, hit menopause then 1 yr later post menopause at 51, and it's been downhill ever since. My hips and knees are the worst, I'm worried that feeling like this is very concerning, wtf am I going to feel like in 5-10 yrs...never imagined losing estrogen etc would affect my joints so bad!! đ©
Round-Public435@reddit
I hear you! I'm 55 now, and when I turned 50, it seemed like everything went bad at once. I started with a small heart issue, which triggered a ton of testing and follow-ups with specialists, etc. Once that happened, then my doctor started with, "Well, you ARE 50 now, so we'll test this, and that, and this other thing, and THIS thing..." and then based on those test results, they needed to test other things - it seemed never-ending.
Menopause started in my 40s, and I *think* I'm finally coming out on the other side of that, but I'm telling you, those are some rough years - the hormonal swings, the hot flashes - it's no joke. I spent so many sleepless nights in the past 5 years dealing with night sweats - I think I wore out the remote for my fan, turning it on and off all night long.
Over the past 2-3 years, my hips started giving me problems, and now both of them need to be replaced. Neck has already been fused. It's like my skeleton has just started rebelling, one piece at a time.
It's kind of funny - you see questions on here about "what would you tell your younger self" - I always say that they should be kind to their body, because all those silly things you did when you were a kid, like jumping off the swings when you were high up in the air, landing on your knees or feet, jumping off the garage roof, climbing trees and falling out, falling off your bike, etc - your body will remember, and it WILL remind you when you're in your 50s...
AussieGirl27@reddit
Honestly those first things could be menopause as well
I'm 56 (as of Monday just fine!) and I've been on esteogen patches and progesterone pills for about a year and that has done wonders for me, it takes about 3-4 weeks for them to kick in so if it hasn't helped at all you may need to up your dose. I'm on 25mg patches
I have also started spraying magnesium oil spray on my feet 30 minutes before I go to bed and that helps so much with my sleep. I don't wake up as much and when I do I am able to go back to sleep with no problems
Lymphatic drainage exercises has also helped with the general soreness of my skin and my plantar fasciitis and stiff ankles in the morning
The only thing I haven't been able to really fix is my snoring and my dry mouth at night
Fuck getting old, it sucks!!
OkTouch5699@reddit
Green tea. I was having tons of aches and pains. I happened to start drinking hot green tea to lower my coffee consumption. About 2 weeks of drinking one a night, I stopped having those morning aches and pains. I googled it, after I realized it, and it helps reduce inflammation. It sound like its mostly your joints, so worth a try. I also starting wearing Oncloud shoes and now get monthly massages, with someone who does a lot of stretching. I am feeling better than I did 3 years ago.
Cozy_Minty@reddit
Omg, I am so sorry, you are still going through all those menopause symptoms at 57? Im going to cry, I thought I was almost done
heather3113@reddit
I have always been a side sleeper and noticed more pain in my hips, even with a new mattress. Sounds crazy, but... I have one of those u shaped body pillows, lay it like a U in my bed, my knees rest over the bottom, so there is less pressure on my lower back, it opens up my hips, so I don't have pain in the morning. Side sleeping my hands would always fall asleep. Using the U, both sides lay right along my body, it keeps me from tossing and turning, my arms rest gently and it supports my body. Pillow tucked under my neck, ear plugs in, fan on... I know i look silly, but the difference it has made for several areas of my body has been tremendous. I almost sleep though the night.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
I actually own one of those U shaped pillows and will try that tonight! i also have the hands falling asleep issue too. i bought this pillow actually as an aid for all of this but wasnât sure how to use it. literally lying in bed typing this so going to try it tonight. and not worried at all about looking silly. Iâm also a CPAP user so iâve lost all my nighttime vanity lol
heather3113@reddit
Let me know how it goes
KingPabloo@reddit
Work the body or the body will work you. Come on GenX, time to take exercising seriously.
Odd_Astronomer_8804@reddit
Hip pain at night has been a real problem for me from time to time, and lidocaine patches you can get over the counter do the trick every time. I learned to use them from my mom's hospice nurse when Mom had severe pain in her arm after a stroke and the patches solved the problem.

Ladymistery@reddit
Get your hip checked
see a physiotherapist and maybe a massage therapist.
-Miscellany-@reddit
For whatever itâs worth OP, I hope you talk to/are talking to a doctor about this. Since, my wife had pain in her hips last year as well, which has turned out to be osteoarthritis, and not a menopause or hydration thing.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
That is my fear, though it only seems to be when i'm sleeping, so i'm trying a new mattress topper and different positions (and a pillow between my knees). but a Dr,s appt is in my future i think. I'm really hoping it's not OA, and just some bizarre menopause symptom that can be relieved with yoga.
-Miscellany-@reddit
I hope it isnât osteoarthritis for you as well.
SheriffBartholomew@reddit
Nope! It's arthritis.
Starkville@reddit
It sucks, doesnât it? When youâre up to it, look into an anti-inflammatory diet.
I keep reading about peptides here on Reddit, and maybe you might find it interesting, too. People giving a lot of feedback about improved joint pain.
Honeybee71@reddit
Weâre all in the same boat, ot sucks. Hang in there!
LayerNo3634@reddit
HRT and exercise/movement. You're too young to just accept this. My mom is proof it's never too late. She did it at 65. I suggest you don't wait until then.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
I started HRT a few months ago but still on a pretty low does of est (.025), i may ask my dr. to increase it, because it doesn't seem to be helping the hotflashes like I had hoped it would! it's inspiring that your mom was able to reverse/improve it at 65 :-)
LayerNo3634@reddit
Started eating right, got active, lost 100 pounds. She's now 80, a size 4-6, and can run circles around me.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
That's amazing! Kudos to your mom!
I_Am_Become_Air@reddit
Voltarin doesn't work on women normally; is it doing anything for you?
jadecichy@reddit
Voltaren gel helps me enormously.
mrsredfast@reddit
Interesting. My rheumatologist recommends it for joints close to the surface of body and itâs been helping my inflamed sternoclavicular joint as long as I apply four times a day. Am a woman with RA.
I_Am_Become_Air@reddit
Interesting! I was asked to try it for my chemo-induced neuropathy and it did nothing for me. Told my mothers, and my RA-suffering MIL told me that. My mom (carpal tunnel + arthritis) also said that.
I am so happy it works for you!! I hate nerve pain.
mrsredfast@reddit
It doesnât eliminate pain but definitely takes it down a notch or two for me. Iâve never tried it on nerve pain.
jadecichy@reddit
Get your hip checked. Mine is arthritis and I qualify for a hip replacement. Iâm using Voltaren on it and it helps a lot - often doesnât hurt at all when I use it. Ibuprofen also helps on days I donât use Voltaren.
worstpartyever@reddit
Have you had a bone density test? Because of my family history, I asked my doctor to refer me. I am 57 and have osteopenia (the step before osteoporosis).
Sorry you're going through it all at once. It sucks, all right.
Vegaprime@reddit
Got all that from long haul covid. Somehow a shot in the buttnfor the hip cleared it all up.
Ollyollyoxenfreed10@reddit
Iâve been in the same boat. I had a bunch of system failures all within two years of my 50th. Menopause is a huge cause of many of the things you mentioned. If youâre a candidate for HRT, go for it. It helped me sooooo much.
lovebeinganasshole@reddit
Exercise really does help with the menopause. It also sounds like you might need a new bed.
Randomwhitelady2@reddit
I got a 3 inch memory foam mattress topper due to hip pain (side sleeping) and itâs gone!
lovebeinganasshole@reddit
I tried that it was at least for me a stop gap measure. I ended up going through 2 mattress brands before getting to one I have now and love.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
Eliminate all sugar and floury carbs. Youâll feel amazing! Insulin Resistance is probably causing some of these systems. It gets really bad in perimenopause/post-menopausal.
My perimenopause started at 40 and I (57 in June) still have hot flashes all day and night. Theyâre especially bad when I indulge in too many sweets. Especially when itâs baked goods. Ice cream does not affect me as badly as floury carbs.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
I actually did low carb for 6 years back in my 40's (Atkins) and it was the best i ever felt. Not doing atkins but definitely going low carb again in hopes i can achieve that again. seems to be the bread/gluten/sugar that is an issue for me. I feel like inflamation is a big part of this.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
Yes, definitely! The hormonal changes due to menopause make it more difficult to process sugar as well as before menopause.
No_Repair7134@reddit
Yoga and CBD are my go to for pain and stay hydrated
lagrandefille@reddit
Are you me? Same age. Same issues.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
Sucks doesn't it? and who's body is my head attached to now? because it certainly doesn't look like the one I had 5+ years ago LOL
BookkeeperLeading887@reddit
Also 57 - I am noticing similar aches and pains , a few non HRT things that have helped ; magnesium glycinate, 400 mg at night - helps with muscle relaxation and sleep , Co Q10 - taken with dinner/ fats - its anti inflammatory, L- Theanine which helps with stress , anxiety but doesnât make me loopy or tired . ALSO - STRETCHING. Stretching daily for about 20 mins has been a huge help .
Roseliberry@reddit
Hip pain is very common post menopause. I suggest HRT. The benefits outweigh the risk.
Dogzillas_Mom@reddit
Som of this can be alleviated with hrt. Other things will be helped by the yoga. You might consider adding Pilates if the yoga goes well. My yoga instructor says âmovement is medicine.â
Guy friend of mine, our age, was talking to me about the stiffness in the morning, where he could barely move. I showed him a couple of low impact stretches just to get things moving. He started stretching every morning and after about a month, told me he felt SO much better.
So move around more. See a doctor. If you havenât lately, get bloodwork done as part of a thorough checkup.
Capital_Pea@reddit (OP)
I'm hoping my new routine of yoga and pilates will help! I do also believe that movement is so importan. I'm actually semi-fortunate in that i do not have a WFH job so i do walk more during the day than i would if i were sitting in a home office! Have a req for bloodwork actually just have to get my tired body there to get it done LOL. also just started HRT.
kawyckoff@reddit
So the new thing i hear, if you are post menopausal, Gluteal Tendinopathy đŹlack of estrogen BTW
temerairevm@reddit
Girl, same . I want to speak to a manager.
Just wanted to share that my âhip painâ turned out to be an ovarian cyst, so definitely go in and get some imaging.

I wonder if persimmon soap mitigates the Ben-Gay smell.
warrenao@reddit
Same thing happened to my Hyundai Accent. Worked fine for years, and suddenly, everydamnthing started falling off all at once. Just ⊠random parts winging their way through space all around me.
We need to see about filing a class-action suit with someone about this engineered obsolescence.
Happy-Bluejay-3849@reddit
You should try asking to have your vitamin and hormone levels checked. A vitamin d deficiency can cause joint pain throughout the body and low hormone levels can cause all sorts of problems.
silvermanedwino@reddit
Keep moving. Donât stop. Talk to your doctor about your joint pain.
Youâre pretty young to give up and just accept the decline.
Seagrave63@reddit
For me, itâs shoulders. Both of them. Getting old sucks.
ValB2307@reddit
It could also be youâre not hydrated enough. It can cause more aches and pains.
Feisty-Lifeguard-550@reddit
I know right , menopause hits hard and wear and tear. I just put on YouTube physio and do that , wee bit yoga , wee bit weights but very light ones in a chair cause I put out me back and knees doing it free standing đ€Łđ I use heat patches and freeze spray , itâs funny cause it comes and goes, good luck , the yoga will help a lot
Feisty-Lifeguard-550@reddit
I couldâve take HRT cause of family blood clot history and I was so depressed and anxious that I started on setraline and itâs made a huge difference to my mental health. The lack of estrogen , the nice hormone that calms you down is depleted so the anxiety I had was off the charts and I meditate daily but it was like I had an alarm bell inside myself 24/7. The sweats and hot flushes will stop , the menopause symptoms like that ease off.
CallingDrDingle@reddit
Are you on HRT at all? Testosterone supplementation will ease that joint pain.
