Looking for UK/European things (Snacks/items) to send my American girlfriend?
Posted by ItsPenguins@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 100 comments
My girlfriend and I are sending each other gift packages from our countries full of small gifts and snacks/candy. I was wondering if anyone had any must try things I could include in my box for her? Here is what I have so far:
Shortbread
Maltesers
Percy pigs
Squashies
Marmalade
Thai sweet chilli sensations
Skips
Kinder bueno
Pickled onion monster munch
Orange fanta (She's in shock at the colour difference)
They don't need to be stricly from the UK, I'm trying to think of a Cadbury bar to add and potentionally some other European chocolate that would blow an americans mind. Anything that she wouldn't have. Thanks!

I took some bits out for a colleague last year and he still talks about how good the Jaffa Cakes were!
Also Monster Munch, Mini Cheddars, Nougat, Love hearts, Polos, Smarties (they have Smarties too but different to ours), Nik Naks, Milky Bars, Pot Noodle.. I also gave him some local postcards.

Wotsits. Would’ve said Percy Pigs and Monster Munch, but you’ve already got those on your list.
stauer88@reddit
Cheese and onion crisps.
It's not a common flavour over there. (Or at least it wasn't!)
RoboTon78@reddit
Tunnocks teacakes.
JCDU@reddit
I was going to add Tunnocks Teacakse & Wagon Wheels but anything with marshmallow in it might react badly to being in the non-pressurised cargo hold of an airplane.
Penguin, chocolate digestive, hobnobs, bourbons, nobby's nuts.
Lonely-Chocolate2587@reddit
A bread mix. I believe the American bread is more closely related to cake.
Great-Ad-632@reddit
No tea??
ItsPenguins@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure what's best, not really a tea drinker myself!
Lonely-Chocolate2587@reddit
What? Are you even British?
I prefer Tetley. Definitely not PG or anything like it, they’re awful these days. Yorkshire is fine too.
rapidbunny4404@reddit
Yorkshire!!!
Nooms88@reddit
Some jams or chutneys if you want to branch out from the snack theme
Lonely-Chocolate2587@reddit
Ah, yes. Branston only though.
AndrewHinds67@reddit
Hob Nobs and Jaffa Cakes. My girlfriend is American and she loves them.

Do you have access to German Katjes? They are the guys that make Percy Pigs for M&S. They are almost exactly the same, except Katjes products don't use pork gelatin, and they cost usually around €1.20, rather than the markup M&S put on them.
anenglishrose@reddit
M&S doesn't use pork either, percy pigs are vegan and don't cost much more than €1.20
Wrong_Duty7043@reddit
They were nicer when they had pork.
elementarydrw@reddit
Ah, i've been out of the country for a few years then. They used to have the green vegetarian ones, but Katjes used to make them with gelatin for the UK range.
And every time I have seen them when visiting parents recently they have been around 2 quid a bag! Are they on offer often? There was a whole thing last year in the UK news about the price now being 2 quid.
Wrong_Duty7043@reddit
Tunnocks tea cakes, bovril, irn bru, dandelion and burdock.
Haunted_Stormbird@reddit
Can I suggest some things for her to send to you?
Smartfood white cheddar popcorn
Extra Toasty Cheezits
Uncle Eddie's peanut butter chocolate chip cookies from WholeFoods. (You will just die when you try these they are so good.)
Nacho Cheese flavoured Doritos
Jarred salsa, red (either Newman's Own, or something organic)and the Herdez green salsa verde
A can of coke, to compare to UK coke
peanut butter filled pretzels
Combo's pizza flavoured filled snacks
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
Galaxy. Your favourite tea bags. Irn bru. Kinder surprise as they aren't allowed a toy inside food there. Quavers. Ribena, they don't have much blackcurrant flavour.

You made me laugh about the Fanta. My in-laws are American and we always have to take British orange Fanta with us when we go to the US because they prefer it. Crunchies and Twiglets also get a spot in the suitcase. Jaffa cakes Pork scratchings A stick of rock from the seaside Parma violets
Secure-Occasion-3599@reddit
Tunnocks caramel bars, milka chocolate, ferrero rocher.

Check out /r/snackexchange and have a read of the UK>US exchanges; you'll get an idea about what's unexpected and/or appreciated. But I think you've got a good list there!
Dense-Coat-4280@reddit
Kinder stuff is readily available in the states. Percy pigs are a great one. Jammie dodgers? Yanks think these are hilarious. Biscuits in general. The monster munch and pigs are what we get in our english care packages... oh and the extra strong tetley tea bags!
JonTravel@reddit
Percy Pigs are available at Target in the US
Dense-Coat-4280@reddit
Really? Wow. Won't give them my money, though.
JonTravel@reddit
I agree with that
Target are starting to stock more M&S stuff and Nordstrom are starting to stock M&S clothing.
Wretched_Colin@reddit
I know the Kinder eggs are illegal in the states. They’re worried about people choking on the yellow toy container.
Thankfully you can just buy a revolver at Walmart to keep yourself amused rather than assembling a Kinder toy.
thricedice88@reddit
Anything with blackcurrant in, I cba to go in to the reason why, but basically it's very unusual in America, enough so to be considered exotic or unusual.

Stroopwaffles! Very tasty Dutch sweet snack. You can get them in (flying) Tiger and most supermarkets (in the UK) now as well I think
defroach84@reddit
You can also get them in the US.
Wretched_Colin@reddit
Lidl have xxl pack of stroopwaffles on the shelves at the moment. They’re irresistible.
LittleMissAbigail@reddit
Some form of caterpillar cake! A whole one might be a challenge but if you still want a bit of the OG, M&S do make mini Colins of a much more reasonable size to send.
WinkyNurdo@reddit
Nik Naks nice n spicy and rib n saucy

Tunnocks Tea Cakes
Galaxy chocolate bar — much better than cadburys
Jaffa Cakes (M&S do some lime ones that are very good)

Chocolate hob nobs
Twiglets
Pork scratchings
Jar of marmite
No_Election_1123@reddit
Depends where your girlfriend lives because most US supermarkets do have a wide range of European chocolate products. So if she discovers she loves Lindt then at least she can pop into the nearest Walgreens and stock up
Tunnocks teacakes are great, but are difficult to ship without coming back crushed at the other end. The wafers (both plain and milk) are a good idea.
It could be fun to send her some Mars bars and Milky Ways, as they're different products in the US . Hobnobs are good, not impossible to find but difficult
Some odd flavoured crisps, US supermarkets are really bland in the flavours they sell here
The things I always bring back are M&S hot cross buns and McVities Ginger Cake, the latter is the only thing I really struggle to find in thr US
Weird1Intrepid@reddit
Biggest jar of Marmite you can find
SportingGamer@reddit
Most of the sweets from a traditional British sweet shop. If you can find it, Old Jamaica chocolate from Cadbury. (rum & raisin bournville)

Tony's, Milka, Lindt and/or Ritter chocolate depending on her taste in chocolate. European chocolate (in which I include British despite the efforts of Cadburys) is quite different to the everyday US stuff, although I'm quite sure the US has decent high end equivalents if you try. The ones I mentioned are all supermarket brands.
No_Election_1123@reddit
All are easily available in most US supermarkets (or at least the ones close by me) though
